Linear Stability Of Thermosolutal Convection In A Micropolar Fluid Saturating A Porous Medium, R Reena, U. S. Rana Jun 2009

Linear Stability Of Thermosolutal Convection In A Micropolar Fluid Saturating A Porous Medium, R Reena, U. S. Rana

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In the present paper, the theoretical investigation of the double-diffusive convection in a micropolar fluid layer heated and soluted from below saturating a porous medium is considered. For a flat fluid layer contained between two free boundaries, an exact solution is obtained. A linear stability analysis theory and normal mode analysis method have been used. For the case of stationary convection, the effect of various parameters like medium permeability, solute gradient and micropolar parameters (i.e., coupling parameter, spin diffusion parameter, micropolar heat conduction parameter and micropolar solute parameter arises due to coupling between spin and solute fluxes) has been analyzed …

Postnatal Maturation Modulates Cerebrovascular Myogenic Tone, Shelton M. Charles Jun 2009

Postnatal Maturation Modulates Cerebrovascular Myogenic Tone, Shelton M. Charles

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The present study focused on the main hypothesis that maturation decreases contractile reliance on calcium influx and myofilament Ca2+ sensitivity, and increases reliance on release of calcium from intracellular stores to develop and maintain pressure-evoked myogenic tone in rat cerebral blood vessels. To test this hypothesis, pressure-induced myogenic tone and changes in artery wall ([Ca2+]i) were measured simultaneously in isolated endothelium denuded, fura-2 loaded middle cerebral arteries (MCA) from pup (PI4) and adult (6 months old) SD rats. We studied the mechanism that govern myogenic tone and examined the hypothesis that during maturation, MCA from rat pups are more reliant …

Effects Of Spaceflight On Phagocytic Function And Immune-Neural Interaction, Farnaz P. Baqai Jun 2009

Effects Of Spaceflight On Phagocytic Function And Immune-Neural Interaction, Farnaz P. Baqai

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In spaceflight, astronauts will be exposed to several environmental risk factors that may lead to disturbances in homeostasis maintained by the central nervous system (CNS) and immune system. Low Earth orbit (LEO) spaceflight studies have shown that microgravity changes virtually all immune parameters that have been evaluated. Similarly, ground based studies have shown that low-dose radiation can also significantly impact immune function. Finally, as most spacecrafts are ecologically and environmentally closed systems, astronauts may be at increased risk for exposure to aerosolized infectious agents. The hypothesis of this study is: Exposure to spaceflight environment (microgravity and radiation) can influence immune …

Postprandial Effects Of Pecans Ingestion On Plasma Level Of Nutrients, Polyphenolic Compounds And Biomarkers Of Antioxidant Status In Human Volunteers, Chatrapa Hudthagosol Jun 2009

Postprandial Effects Of Pecans Ingestion On Plasma Level Of Nutrients, Polyphenolic Compounds And Biomarkers Of Antioxidant Status In Human Volunteers, Chatrapa Hudthagosol

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pecans (Carya illinoinensis) are rich sources of polyphenolic compounds and nutrients, which have antioxidant capacity results in favorable reductions in plasma lipids and lipoproteins. However, the health benefits of pecans may not be limited to blood lipid changes. There has been very little investigation into the contribution of bioactive components found in nuts to antioxidant protection. The purposes of the study were 1) to determine the impact of pecan consumption on concentration of total plasma polyphenols and their peak concentration over time. 2) to measure the effect of a pecan diet on postprandial levels of plasma lipid peroxidation …

Mnte-2-Pyp And Radiation In A Prostate Cancer Model: Implications For Radiotherapy, Adeola Y. Makinde Jun 2009

Mnte-2-Pyp And Radiation In A Prostate Cancer Model: Implications For Radiotherapy, Adeola Y. Makinde

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A major limitation of successful radiation therapy in cancer treatment is the increase in normal tissue damage as higher doses are used to achieve greater tumor destruction. Radiation dose optimization in cancer therapy requires achieving maximum tumor destruction with minimal damage to normal tissue Antioxidants have been shown to protect normal tissues against radiation damage, as radiation-induced tissue damage results predominantly from reactive oxygen species that directly damage cellular components. However, for effective use as normal tissue radioprotectants in radiotherapy, these antioxidants must not protect the tumors. Mn (III) tetrakis (N-ethylpyridinium-2-yl) porphyrin (MnTE-2-PyP) is a metalloporphyrin antioxidant that has been …

Fetal Cocaine Exposure Causes Epigenetic Changes In The Rat Heart, Kurt D. Meyer Jun 2009

Fetal Cocaine Exposure Causes Epigenetic Changes In The Rat Heart, Kurt D. Meyer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cocaine abuse continues to be prevalent in the United States and other industrialized nations, in addition to the negative health effects that cocaine abuse has on the user, a mother who uses cocaine while pregnant also exposes the developing fetus to cocaine. Although there have been many studies of the effects of cocaine on the adult heart, studies of cocaine on the fetal heart and its potential delayed pathophysiological effects on cardiac function in adult offspring are extremely limited. The studies of the present project sought to enhance the understanding of the effect of cocaine exposure on the fetal heart …

Stepping Beyond The Smith Plaintiffs‘ Reliance On Corso: An Alternative Approach To Recovering Emotional-Distress Damages In Wrongful-Birth Cases In New Hampshire, Parker B. Potter Jr. Jun 2009

Stepping Beyond The Smith Plaintiffs‘ Reliance On Corso: An Alternative Approach To Recovering Emotional-Distress Damages In Wrongful-Birth Cases In New Hampshire, Parker B. Potter Jr.

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “More than twenty years ago, in Smith v. Cote, the New Hampshire Supreme Court held “that New Hampshire recognizes a cause of action for wrongful birth.” After so holding, the court then discussed the damages available to a prevailing wrongful-birth plaintiff. Among other things, the court held that when parental emotional distress associated with raising a disabled child, born after the mother had received negligent pre-natal assurance of the baby‘s normal health, “results in tangible pecuniary losses, such as medical expenses or counseling fees, such losses are recoverable.” The court further held that a wrongful-birth plaintiff may not recover …

Let Us Never Blame A Contract Breaker, Richard A. Posner Jun 2009

Let Us Never Blame A Contract Breaker, Richard A. Posner

Michigan Law Review

Holmes famously proposed a "no fault" theory of contract law: a contract is an option to perform or pay, and a "breach" is therefore not a wrongful act, but merely triggers the duty to pay liquidated or other damages. I elaborate the Holmesian theory, arguing that fault terminology in contract law, such as "good faith," should be given pragmatic economic interpretations, rather than be conceived of in moral terms. I further argue that contract doctrines should normally be alterable only on the basis of empirical investigations.

Inferring The Winning Party In The Supreme Court From The Pattern Of Questioning At Oral Argument, Lee Epstein, William M. Landes, Richard A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Chief Justice John Roberts, and others, have noticed that the lawyer in an oral argument in the Supreme Court who is asked more questions than his opponent is likely to lose the case. This paper provides rigorous statistical tests of that hypothesis and of the related hypothesis that the number of words per question asked, as distinct from just the number of questions asked, also predicts the outcome of the case. We explore the theoretical basis for these hypotheses. Our analysis casts light on competing theories of judicial behavior, which we call the "legalistic" and the "realistic." In the former, …

Effect Of Dust Particles On Rotating Micropolar Fluid Heated From Below Saturating A Porous Medium, R. Reena, U. S. Rana

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper deals with the theoretical investigation of the effect of dust particles on a layer of rotating micropolar fluid heated from below saturating a porous medium. A dispersion relation is obtained for a flat fluid layer contained between two free boundaries using a linear stability analysis theory and normal mode analysis. The principle of exchange of stabilities is found to hold true for the micropolar fluid saturating a porous medium heated from below in the absence of dust particles, rotation and micropolar heat conduction parameter. The oscillatory modes are introduced due to the presence of the dust particles and …

Guided Inquiry Lab Exercises In Development And Oxygen Consumption Using Zebrafish, Brian Bagatto Jun 2009

Guided Inquiry Lab Exercises In Development And Oxygen Consumption Using Zebrafish, Brian Bagatto

Biology Faculty Research

Zebrafish have become a model organism in many areas of research and are now being used with more frequency in the classroom to teach important biological concepts. The two guided inquiry exercises in this article are each aimed at a different level of instruction, but each can be modified to fit the needs of many high school or college-level courses. The "Zebrafish Development and Environment'' exercise teaches high school students about zebrafish development by presenting a series of embryos at different ages. Without access to visual references, students are asked to rank developing zebrafish by age and explain their choices. …

PURPOSE: Resistance to platinum chemotherapy remains a significant problem in ovarian carcinoma. Here, we examined the biological mechanisms and therapeutic potential of targeting a critical platinum resistance gene, ATP7B, using both in vitro and in vivo models.

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Expression of ATP7A and ATP7B was examined in ovarian cancer cell lines by real-time reverse transcription-PCR and Western blot analysis. ATP7A and ATP7B gene silencing was achieved with targeted small interfering RNA (siRNA) and its effects on cell viability and DNA adduct formation were examined. For in vivo therapy experiments, siRNA was incorporated into the neutral nanoliposome 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DOPC).

RESULTS: ATP7A …

The Gay Artist As Tragic Hero In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Henry Alley Jun 2009

The Gay Artist As Tragic Hero In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Henry Alley

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Gay Artist as Tragic Hero in The Picture of Dorian Gray" Henry M. Alley discusses the central artistic figure in Oscar Wilde's novel, Basil Hallward. As the novel's tragic protagonist, he commands the most pity and fear and serves as the most dynamic member of the dramatis personae. Alley contextualizes his discussion within Aristotle's Poetics, contemporary criticism, as well as Wilde's own comments. In addition, Alley looks at Hallward's attempt to hide or censor his gay feelings as parallel to Wilde's struggle with the various versions of the novel. Nevertheless, the characterization of Hallward celebrates the …

Nietzsche's Influence On Bakhtin's Aesthetics Of Grotesque Realism, Yelena Mazour-Matusevich Jun 2009

Nietzsche's Influence On Bakhtin's Aesthetics Of Grotesque Realism, Yelena Mazour-Matusevich

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Nietzsche's Influence on Bakhtin's Aesthetics of Grotesque Realism" Yelena Mazour-Matusevich discusses Bakhtin's concept of grotesque realism in the light of Nietzsche's influence, particularly his notion of chaos and its expression of the Dionysian blended with and perceived through Russian religious thought and mythological consciousness. Mazour-Matusevich postulates that Nietzsche's influence on Bakhtin is most obvious in the latter's seminal work, Rabelais and His World. In order to demonstrate Nietzsche's influence on Bakhtin, Mazour-Matusevich provides an overview of Nietzsche's reception in Russia during Bakhtin's formative years as well as of the current state of research concerning the correlation between …

Revisiting Histidine-Dependent Acid Phosphatases: A Distinct Group Of Tyrosine Phosphatases., Suresh Veeramani, Ming-Shyue Lee, Ming-Fong Lin

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Although classical protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) superfamily members are cysteine-dependent, emerging evidence shows that many acid phosphatases (AcPs) function as histidine-dependent PTPs in vivo. These AcPs dephosphorylate phospho-tyrosine substrates intracellularly and could have roles in development and disease. In contrast to cysteine-dependent PTPs, they utilize histidine, rather than cysteine, for substrate dephosphorylation. Structural analyses reveal that active site histidine, but not cysteine, faces towards the substrate and functions as the phosphate acceptor. Nonetheless, during dephosphorylation, both histidine-dependent and cysteine-dependent PTPs use their active site arginine and aspartate for substrate binding and proton donation, respectively. Thus, we propose that they should …

Design Evaluation Of An Anaerobic Chamber Prototype, Anthony M. Kendig Jun 2009

Design Evaluation Of An Anaerobic Chamber Prototype, Anthony M. Kendig

Master's Theses

Within the field of microbiology there is a group of bacteria termed, anaerobic, because of their aversion to oxygen. Clinical and industrial interest in these bacteria has made the use of anaerobic systems necessary for widespread testing and research. The glove-less anaerobic chamber has become the premier method for successful cultivation of anaerobic isolates. A prototype anaerobic chamber design contains new features and different anaerobic techniques formed around additional specifications given by microbiologists. Through testing and discussion of the anaerobic systems of this prototype, the design is evaluated based on its anaerobic performance. The three chamber systems that maintain the …
