Diseases Of Floriculture Crops In South Carolina: Evaluation Of A Pre-Plant Sanitation Treatment And Identification Of Species Of Phytophthora, Ernesto Robayo Camacho
Diseases Of Floriculture Crops In South Carolina: Evaluation Of A Pre-Plant Sanitation Treatment And Identification Of Species Of Phytophthora, Ernesto Robayo Camacho
All Theses
This project was composed of two separate studies. In one study, the species of Phytophthora that have been found associated with diseased floriculture crops in South Carolina and four other states were characterized and identified using molecular (RFLP fingerprints and DNA sequences for ITS regions and cox I and II genes), morphological (sporangia, oogonia, antheridia, oospores, and chlamydospores), and physiological (mating behavior and cardinal temperatures) characters. In addition, sensitivity to the fungicide mefenoxam was determined. In all, 87 isolates from 63 host plants that were collected over a 13-year period (1996 through 2008) were examined. Host plants came from 46 …
An Experimental Analysis Of Jackpotting, Toshikazu Kuroda
An Experimental Analysis Of Jackpotting, Toshikazu Kuroda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This experiment assessed effects of jackpotting, defined as the delivery of a larger than usual reinforcer, on responding of pigeons maintained by fixed-interval (FI) schedules. In baseline conditions, reinforcer duration was 1-s and all such reinforcers were delivered from the hopper located on the main work panel. During jackpot conditions, a 1-s reinforcer occasionally was replaced by a 7-s reinforcer (jackpot) delivered from a second hopper located at the rear of the chamber. Sham jackpot conditions also were studied. These sham conditions were identical to the jackpot conditions with one exception: A 1-s, instead of 7-s, reinforcer was delivered from …
Rapid Characterization Of Biomass: The Use Of Near Infrared And Fluorescence Spectroscopy As Process Analytical Technology (Pat) Method, Kofi Nkansah
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The heterogeneous property of biomass (wood) affects its potential of being converted into any form of fuel in different ways (both positive and negative effects). Therefore in other to efficiently utilized biomass as a raw material for conversion into any form of clean alternative fuel to displace some of the fossil fuel we consume in the United State on a commercial scale basis, a quick, robust, non destructive on/in/at-line method of characterizing the physical and chemical properties of biomass that are relevant to the bio-refinery industry is imperative.;This study discusses the potential of using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and fluorescence …

Evaluating Straddle Carrier Deployment Policies: A Simulation Study For The Piraeus Container Terminal, Eleni Hadjiconstantinou, Nang Laik Ma
Evaluating Straddle Carrier Deployment Policies: A Simulation Study For The Piraeus Container Terminal, Eleni Hadjiconstantinou, Nang Laik Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Most container terminals in the world today are operating up to their capacities. In this paper, we have developed a decision support system to optimise yard operations by considering all container flows (import, export and transshipment) through the yard with the view to improving the terminal performance and efficiency. In another paper, we proposed an optimisation model that determines optimal container locations and straddle carrier (SC) movements with the objective of minimising the overall storage and handling cost of containers. In this paper, a discrete event simulation tool for container terminal operations has been developed with three objectives: (i) to …
Goddess, King, And Grail: Aspects Of Sovereignty Within The Early Medieval Heroic Tradition Of The British Isles, Robert Bevill
Goddess, King, And Grail: Aspects Of Sovereignty Within The Early Medieval Heroic Tradition Of The British Isles, Robert Bevill
All Theses
When studying the heroic tales and epics of medieval cultures, more questions
about their origins and influences remain than answers. The search for sources for a
single work, Beowulf, for example, can and has been examined within Germanic,
Brittanic, Norse, and even Irish traditions. Scores of sources, parallels, and analogues
have been found and analyzed, but so many possibilities may only serve to obfuscate
the actual origins of the Beowulf poet's myriad influences. However, the search for
analogous works can build a stronger sense of context for certain motifs and greater
themes within a large number of similar texts. Thus, …
Acceleration Of Spiking Neural Networks On Multicore Architectures, Rommel Jalasutram
Acceleration Of Spiking Neural Networks On Multicore Architectures, Rommel Jalasutram
All Theses
The human cortex is the seat of learning and cognition. Biological scale
implementations of cortical models have the potential to provide significantly more
power problem solving capabilities than traditional computing algorithms. The large
scale implementation and design of these models has attracted significant attention
recently. High performance implementations of the models are needed to enable such
large scale designs. This thesis examines the acceleration of the spiking neural network
class of cortical models on several modern multicore processors. These include the
Izhikevich, Wilson, Morris-Lecar, and Hodgkin-Huxley models. The architectures
examined are the STI Cell, Sun UltraSPARC T2+, and Intel Xeon …
Effects Of Parasitism And Soil Compaction On Pupation Behavior Of The Green Bottle Fly Lucilia Sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Jonathan Cammack
Effects Of Parasitism And Soil Compaction On Pupation Behavior Of The Green Bottle Fly Lucilia Sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Jonathan Cammack
All Theses
Although the pupation behavior of blow flies has been widely studied, my work is the first to examine the effects of parasitoids and soil compaction on pupation behavior. The objectives of my research were to provide insight into a host-parasitoid system involving Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) and to develop a predictive model of pupation depth for L. sericata, with respect to soil compaction. Two experiments were conducted examining the effects of parasitoids and soil compaction on the pupation behavior of L. sericata. In all experiments, larvae of L. sericata were introduced to containers …
The Origins Of The Modern Religious Lobby In Virginia, 1968-1980, Kenneth Skipper
The Origins Of The Modern Religious Lobby In Virginia, 1968-1980, Kenneth Skipper
All Theses
The 1960s conservative movement of Barry Goldwater gave rise to a politically active and influential block of voters that came to be known as the religious Right. Disillusioned with the direction of America and a government that seemed hostile to their views and values, religious-minded Americans began to organize to fight for the issues that were important to them. Virginia was an important battleground in the fight over these important social issues due to its unique demographic make-up with a more liberal and urban northern part with the rest of Virginia more conservative and rural. The organization of politically minded …
Single Command Rendering With Sun Grid Engine, William Robinson
Single Command Rendering With Sun Grid Engine, William Robinson
All Theses
According to the Autodesk website, Autodesk Maya software is a powerful, integrated 3D modeling, animation, visual effects, and rendering solution. While this statement is true in every sense, one quality that this software and its competitors lack is in the area of resource management. Though not as critical to the other tasks in the production line, resource management is a crucial component of successful rendering. Until recently, Digital Production Arts students have been left to their own means to manage the rendering process; however, with the use of Sun Grid Engine, rendering tasks can be simplified to a single-command process, …
Relationships Between Impervious Surfaces And Surface Water Quality In Hunnicutt Creek Watershed, Clemson, South Carolina, Swaros Dumrichob
Relationships Between Impervious Surfaces And Surface Water Quality In Hunnicutt Creek Watershed, Clemson, South Carolina, Swaros Dumrichob
All Theses
Hunnicutt Creek watershed drains to the eastern edge of Clemson University campus. The landscape of this part of campus changes from a natural park like botanical garden to one dominated by academic buildings. The campus area has changed in time as well with increasing impervious areas such as roads, parking lots, roof tops and decreasing the amount of forested land leaded to the impairment of water quality in this creek. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the relationships between water quality indicators and percent imperviousness at a watershed level. Eight sampling sites were assigned at each sub-watershed within …
Effect Of Environmental Density And Buoyancy On Growth And Gravitropic Response In Maize Roots, Jessy Robbins
Effect Of Environmental Density And Buoyancy On Growth And Gravitropic Response In Maize Roots, Jessy Robbins
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The mechanism by which plants sense gravity is not fully understood. The statolith theory states that plants sense gravity based on the sedimentation of starch granules called statoliths. However, not all plants contain statoliths. The hydrostatic model was proposed to explain gravitropic sensing in systems which lack statoliths. This model states that the gravity sensor in a plant cell is the entire protoplast; gravitropic sensing depends on the buoyancy of the protoplast relative to the density of its external environment. The ability of maize roots to sense gravity when grown in media of differing densities is examined in these studies. …

Spiny Lobsters Use Urine-Borne Olfactory Signaling And Physical Aggressive Behaviors To Influence Social Status Of Conspecifics, Shkelzen Shabani, Michiya Kamio, Charles D. Derby
Peer Reviewed Articles
Decapod crustaceans, like many other animals, engage in agonistic behaviors that enhance their ability to compete for resources with conspecifics. These agonistic behaviors include the release of chemical signals as well as physical aggressive and submissive behaviors. In this study, we report that Caribbean spiny lobsters, Panulirus argus, use both urine-borne chemical signaling and physical aggressive behaviors during interactions with conspecifics, and that these agonistic behaviors can influence the behavior and eventual social status of the interactants. Spiny lobsters that engaged primarily in physical aggressive behaviors became dominant, whereas spiny lobsters that received these physical aggressive behaviors responded with …

Projected Climate Change Effects On Nuthatch Distribution And Diversity Across Asia, Shaily Menon, M. Zafar-Ul Islam, A. Townsend Peterson
Peer Reviewed Publications
We used ecological niche modeling approaches to explore climate change implications for one family of birds, the Sittidae, in Asia. Quantitative niche models based on present-day distributions for each of 13 species were projected onto future climate change scenarios. Species’ potential distributional areas tended to be predicted to retract along their fringes, and at lower elevations along mountain ranges. As observed in other studies, montane systems were relatively more robust to the horizontal effects of climate change on species’ distributions compared to flatland systems, so range contractions were focused in Southeast Asia and peninsular India.

A Computational Study Of The Effects Of Temperature Variation On Turtle Egg Development, Sex Determination, And Population Dynamics, Amy L. Parrott
A Computational Study Of The Effects Of Temperature Variation On Turtle Egg Development, Sex Determination, And Population Dynamics, Amy L. Parrott
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Climate change and its effects on ecosystems is a major concern. For certain animal species, especially those that exhibit what is known as temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), temperature variations pose a possibly serious threat (Valenzuela and Lance, 2004). In these species, temperature, and not chromosomes, determines the sex of the animal (Valenzuela and Lance, 2004). It is conceivable therefore, that if the temperature changes to favor only one sex, then dire consequences for their populations could occur. In this dissertation, we examine possible effects that climate change may have upon Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta), a species with TSD. We investigate …

Biology Faculty Publications
Using an adaptation of published behavioral protocols, we determined that acute exposure to the cholinergic compounds nicotine and carbamylcholine decreased planarian motility in a concentration-dependent manner. A tobacco cembranoid (1S,2E,4R,6R,7E,11E)-cembra-2,7,11- triene-4,6-diol (4R-cembranoid), also decreased planarian motility. Experiments in the presence of 1 μM 4R-cembranoid did increase the IC50 for nicotine- but not carbamylcholine-induced decrease in planarian motility. When planarians were exposed for 24 h to either nicotine or carbamylcholine at concentrations near their respective IC50 values and then transferred to plain media, nicotineexposed, but not carbamylcholine- or cembranoid-exposed worms displayed withdrawal-like distress behaviors. In experiments where planarians were pre-exposed to …

Combined Spinal-Epidural Versus Traditional Epidural In Labor Analgesia, Kimberly M. Wade
Combined Spinal-Epidural Versus Traditional Epidural In Labor Analgesia, Kimberly M. Wade
Theses and Dissertations
Epidural anesthesia is a popular choice among women for pain control during labor. There are several techniques that can be utilized by anesthesia providers to deliver this type of regional anesthesia. Traditional epidurals have been in use the longest and may be associated with prolonged labor, the need to augment with oxytocin, and an increase in the rate of incremental delivery (Anim-Somuab, Smjth, & Howell, 2005). The combined spinal-epidural technique was introduced to offer more flexibility and to decrease the incidence of adverse effects seen with traditional epidural anesthesia. This evidence-based review of literature will focus on studies that compare …

Who Drowns? Encoding The Second Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The aim of the current study was to identify the casualty characteristics that contribute to drowning according to the 4W model (Avramidis, Butterly & Llewellyn, 2007, 2009). Qualitative content analysis was utilized to analyze drowning incident videos (n = 41), and semistructured interviews of those involved in drowning incidents (n = 34). Results confirm that human activity in, on, and around an aquatic environment can lead to drowning, regardless of the casualty’s type, gender, age, ethnicity, and area of residence. Males far outnumber females as drowning victims. Younger persons were more likely to drown than were adults. Due to socioeconomic …

The researchers adopted relational dialectics theory (Baxter & Montgomery, 1996) to examine the discourse of 37 bereaved parents. Research questions guiding the study were what dialectical contradictions do bereaved parents experience when communicating with their marital partner after their child’s death and how do bereaved parents and their marital partners communicatively negotiate the dialectical contradictions they experience? Our analysis revealed that bereaved parents experienced a dialectical contradiction between trying to grieve their child’s death together as a couple and apart as individuals. Likewise, parents experienced a contradiction between being both open and closed when talking with one another about their …

The Tibetan Mastiff is one of the most archaic, ferocious and the largest dogs in the world. The Kunming dog is the chief working-dog breed in China. In this study, ten microsatellite loci were used to assess the genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships in six dog breeds, including Tibetan Mastiff, Kunming dog, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retriever, English Springer Spaniel, and German Shepherd. The highest genetic diversity was exhibited by the Tibetan Mastiff, indicating useful protection and little inbreeding in the modern Tibetan Mastiff. Higher genetic diversity was observed in European breeds, supporting the hypotheses that breeders outcross their pure breed …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Conducting education in three-dimensional (3-D) virtual worlds is an emerging phenomenon in the educational arena. The objective of this research is to investigate the factors influencing students’ intention to adopt the 3-D virtual worlds for delivery of education. Drawing on existing technology acceptance models as well as studies in traditional and distance education, we developed a model to study students’ acceptance of using a 3-D virtual world for education and propose to test the model empirically using survey data collected from college students. We also study the use of two instructional methods in the 3-D virtual world. This study contributes …
How Do We Know If Our Contests Are "Fair"?, Wendy Hein
How Do We Know If Our Contests Are "Fair"?, Wendy Hein
Journal of Extension
Adults are often forthright with their concerns about the fairness of contests. In the case study reported here, clients were upset about the Master Showmanship Contest and whether "goat members always win." I predicted that, in a fair contest, winning should be independent of project area and used empirical tests to show that it is. I also measured the perceptions of two additional groups of stakeholders in the contest: youth participants and judges. The results indicate that perceptions can differ drastically from actuality, which has ramifications for 4-H and all areas of Extension work that rely on client input.

A Conceptual Integration Analysis Of Multiple Instructional Metaphors, Robert Johnson
Dissertations
The present study was conducted to investigate some of the practical implications of conceptual integration theory for educators. This research was a mixed-methods study exploring how improvements in understanding—learning—(as measured by a selectedresponse assessment) are reflected in changes in learner language (described in terms of conceptual integration patterns). After a pretest with open-response and selected-response prompts, two groups of young adult participants viewed different videos of a slightly different review lesson in genes, genetics, and heredity, the difference lying in two different metaphor conditions: the experimental group was shown a more “metaphorrich” version of the lesson using two classic metaphors …

My thesis represents the crux of my goal in coming to UNLV: to begin and successfully complete the first half of a novel that I have spent years developing. I attribute much of my success to the dedication I have learned in pushing through the MFA program with the help of my advisors, and will leave the program with enough vision to complete the novel I have begun.
My novel tells the story of a fictional Pacific Northwest town circa WWII. The novel begins with the discovery of a body.It then goes back in time and follows the lives of …
