The Influence Of Post-Burial Environment And Plant-Bone Interactions On Vertebrate Preservation: An Experimental Taphonomic Study, Christopher Robert Noto Aug 2009

The Influence Of Post-Burial Environment And Plant-Bone Interactions On Vertebrate Preservation: An Experimental Taphonomic Study, Christopher Robert Noto

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Differential preservation of bone due to varying local-to-global terrestrial environmental conditions is recognized as a pervasive bias throughout the fossil record. Furthermore, the distribution of these environments has varied considerably through time, profoundly affecting what is preserved in the fossil record, and where. Little is known regarding how environment-specific decay and diagenesis affect terrestrial bone preservation, and ultimately our reconstructions of paleoecology, diversity, and biogeography. To investigate short-term processes critical in the decay and diagenesis of buried bone, I performed a 14-month controlled taphonomic experiment which explored the individual and collective effects of 1) sediment hydrology and organic content [sand …

The Role Of Nitrogenous Nutrients In The Occurrence Of The Harmful Dinoflagellate Blooms Caused By Cochlodinium Polykrikoides In Long Island Estuaries (Ny, Usa), Amanda Merle Burson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides is well known for forming ichthyotoxic blooms in coastal regions of Asia and North America, but the nutritional factors supporting and promoting these blooms have not been well studied. To better understand the nutritional ecology of the harmful dinoflagellate blooms caused by Cochlodinium polykrikoides in Long Island estuaries (NY, USA), laboratory and field studies of this species were conducted. I documented the spatial and temporal dynamics of nutrients, C. polykrikoides cells, and co-occurring phytoplankton within two New York estuaries from 2006 - 2008. I quantified the growth response of C. polykrikoides and co-occurring phytoplankton during …

Enduring Violence In The Lives Of Formerly Incarcerated Women: A Study In Individual Survival And Societal Indifference, Diane Miller Johnson Aug 2009

Enduring Violence In The Lives Of Formerly Incarcerated Women: A Study In Individual Survival And Societal Indifference, Diane Miller Johnson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Women in the United States who are released from prison face multiple obstacles in their efforts to establish stable lives outside the criminal justice system. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than half of the women released from jail are rearrested within three years. Increasingly, research has documented the substantial likelihood that women who become incarcerated have childhood and adult histories of physical and sexual abuse and poverty. This qualitative study examines the “lived experience” of violence in the lives of formerly incarcerated women during three periods in their lives: childhood, adulthood and incarceration. An analysis of 41 …

Segregation Of Palaemonid Shrimp Along The Shark River Estuary: Implications For Trophic Function, Lauren C. Mccarthy

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the abundance, distribution, and spatiotemporal variation of palaemonid shrimp species in relation to season and salinity in the Shark River Estuary, Everglades National Park (ENP), Florida, USA. Five palaemonid species occurred in the samples: Palaemonetes paludosus, P. pugio, P. intermedius, Palaemon floridanus, and Leander paulensis; L. paulensis was collected only during the wet season. Overall, shrimp catches in traps doubled in the dry season. Catches in the upper estuary were dominated by P. paludosus, particularly in the wet season, while catch per unit effort (CPUE) at the most downstream, …

Life As A Sober Citizen : Aldo Leopold's Wildlife Ecology 118., Nancy Stearns Theiss Aug 2009

Life As A Sober Citizen : Aldo Leopold's Wildlife Ecology 118., Nancy Stearns Theiss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This historic case study addressed the issue of the lack of citizen action toward environmentally responsible behavior. Although there have been studies regarding components of environmental responsible behavior [ERB], there has been little focus on historic models of exemplary figures of ERB. This study examined one of the first conservation courses in the United States, Wildlife Ecology 118, taught by Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) for 13 years at the University of Wisconsin. Today, Aldo Leopold is recognized as an exemplary conservationist whose land ethic is cited as providing the ecological approach needed for understanding the complex issues of modern society. The …

Ultrakinetic Features Of Anime Texts: Revisioning Composition Theory And Exploring Visual Rhetoric Pedagogy., Karen Ware 1973- Aug 2009

Ultrakinetic Features Of Anime Texts: Revisioning Composition Theory And Exploring Visual Rhetoric Pedagogy., Karen Ware 1973-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our contemporary culture is laden with a glut of visual stimuli: advertising, packaging, television, film, the internet, digital-camera-wireless-web-access-mobile-phones. In a world filled with visually rhetorical media, it is imperative that the field of Composition continue to embrace the theorizing and use of visual rhetoric an apt (if not vital) pursuit. It seems a responsible choice to select visual texts and/or visually rich writing assignments in order to address the current fabric of public/private communication. Furthermore, such texts can potentially set the student reader (viewer/writer/designer/composer) at ease in the sometimes daunting task of becoming a "college writer" and subsequently a professional …

Christian Yoga As A Product Of Hinduism And The New Age Movement, Injib Kim Aug 2009

Christian Yoga As A Product Of Hinduism And The New Age Movement, Injib Kim

Masters Theses

This thesis is divided into four main parts. Part one examines the origin of Hindu yoga practice. It will focus on the ancient Hindu origins of modern Yoga practice. Part two deals with the introduction of yoga into the western world. It examines the socio-cultural-religious phenomenon that Yoga has become. Chapter three inspects yoga in American churches. It concerns the origins, meaning, and detailed methods of Christian Yoga. The last part formulates a biblical response to Christian yoga. It is an apologetic for biblical Christianity.

Expression Of Cpi-17 In Smooth Muscle During Embryonic Development And In Neointimal Lesion Formation., Jee In Kim, Garbo D Young, Li Jin, Avril V Somlyo, Masumi Eto

Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics Faculty Papers

Ca(2+) sensitivity of smooth muscle (SM) contraction is determined by CPI-17, an inhibitor protein for myosin light chain phosphatase (MLCP). CPI-17 is highly expressed in mature SM cells, but the expression level varies under pathological conditions. Here, we determined the expression of CPI-17 in embryonic SM tissues and arterial neointimal lesions using immunohistochemistry. As seen in adult animals, the predominant expression of CPI-17 was detected at SM tissues on mouse embryonic sections, whereas MLCP was ubiquitously expressed. Compared with SM alpha-actin, CPI-17 expression doubled in arterial SM from embryonic day E10 to E14. Like SM alpha-actin and other SM marker …

Anticancer Properties Of Research-Grade Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal) And Characterization Of Its Effect On The Mdr1-Encoded Phosphoglycoprotein Efflux Pump, Sara Garrett Aug 2009

Anticancer Properties Of Research-Grade Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal) And Characterization Of Its Effect On The Mdr1-Encoded Phosphoglycoprotein Efflux Pump, Sara Garrett

All Theses

Multiple drug resistance (MDR) in tumors, observed both in vivo and in vitro, is generally attributed to efflux-mediated reduced drug accumulation via mdr1/P-gp. Notoriously chemoresistant colorectal cancers exhibit the highest P-gp expression, account for 9% of all cancer deaths, and are the third most common cancer in men and women. P-gp, a 170kDa protein, contains twelve transmembrane segments with two ATP-binding domains used to extrude intracellular compounds of broad specificity against a concentration gradient. Studies concerning natural health products are becoming more prevalent in the search for safe anti-P-gp remedies and Hydrastis canadensis (goldenseal) was studied for its anti-cancer properties. …

Dynamic Mechanical (Brush) Allodynia In Cluster Headache: A Prevalence Study In A Tertiary Headache Clinic., Michael J Marmura, Muhammad Abbas, Avi Ashkenazi

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

Cutaneous allodynia (CA) has been described in migraine and has been related to treatment failure. There are little data about the incidence of CA in other primary headache syndromes such as cluster headache (CH). The objectives of this study are to evaluate the prevalence of dynamic mechanical (brush) allodynia (BA) in CH patients attending a tertiary headache clinic, and to assess its relation to disease characteristics. Adult patients with episodic or chronic CH were recruited. We obtained demographic data and data on disease characteristics through a structured questionnaire, and tested the patients for brush allodynia BA by applying a 4 …

High Efficient Electrical Stimulation Of Hippocampal Slices With Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanofiber Microbrush Array, Edward D. De Asis Jr., T. D. Barbara Nguyen-Vu, Prabhu U. Arumugam, Hua Chen, Alan M. Cassell, Russell J. Andrews, Cary Y. Yang, Jun Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Long-term neuroprostheses for functional electrical stimulation must efficiently stimulate tissue without electrolyzing water and raising the extracellular pH to toxic levels. Comparison of the stimulation efficiency of tungsten wire electrodes (W wires), platinum microelectrode arrays (PtMEA), as-grown vertically aligned carbon nanofiber microbrush arrays (VACNF MBAs), and polypyrrole coated (PPy-coated) VACNF MBAs in eliciting field potentials in the hippocampus slice indicates that, at low stimulating voltages that preclude the electrolysis of water, only the PPy-coated VACNF MBA is able to stimulate the CA3 to CA1 pathway. Unlike the W wires, PtMEA, as-grown VACNF MBA, and the PPy-coated VACNF MBA …

East Asia And Southeast Asia: Similarity In Trade Structures, W.H. Loke Aug 2009

East Asia And Southeast Asia: Similarity In Trade Structures, W.H. Loke

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This paper aims to analyse the similarity of trade structures among some selected Northeast and Southeast Asian economies. The study covers a time series analysis from 1990 to 2008. It is important to know whether these countries are becoming more or less similar in trade structures over time. The analysis provides an indication whether these economies are competitors or complements in their trade. The paper addresses a current concern on whether China is out-competing the ASEAN region. The Finger-Kreinin index (1979) is modified to compute for the net export similarity index. Data is sourced from the United Nations Comtrade database.
