Climate Change Assessment And Agriculture In General Equilibrium Models: Alternative Modeling Strategies, Ruslana Palatnik, Roberto Roson Sep 2009

Climate Change Assessment And Agriculture In General Equilibrium Models: Alternative Modeling Strategies, Ruslana Palatnik, Roberto Roson

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Agricultural sectors play a key role in the economics of climate change. Land as an input to agricultural production is one of the most important links between economy and the biosphere, representing a direct projection of human action on the natural environment. Agricultural management practices and cropping patterns have a vast effect on biogeochemical cycles, freshwater availability and soil quality. Agriculture also plays an important role in emitting and storing greenhouse gases. Thus, to consistently investigate climate policy and future pathways for the economic and natural environment, a realistic representation of agricultural land-use is essential. Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models …

The Economic Valuation Of Marine Ecosystems, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Helen Ding, Anil Markandya Sep 2009

The Economic Valuation Of Marine Ecosystems, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Helen Ding, Anil Markandya

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In a democratic system, policy makers have to take the preferences of the citizens into account. Since we live in a world with scarce resources, one is asked to make choices regarding the use and management of these resources. In this context, if policy makers decide to invest in the protection of marine ecosystems, less financial resources will be available for other policy areas, for example national health. Moreover, the investment in the protection of marine ecosystems brings along with it the provision of a wide range of benefits to humans though most are not priced in the existing markets …

A Fluorescent Fibre Solar Concentrator (Ffsc) Design And Trial Run / Wang Chen, Chen Wang Sep 2009

A Fluorescent Fibre Solar Concentrator (Ffsc) Design And Trial Run / Wang Chen, Chen Wang

Student Works (2000-2009)

This thesis presents the author's research work on a concept development in the field of solar energy application for building illumination during his doctoral journey in Malaysia. As a considerable solution to the energy issues, solar energy is made widely available for daylighting and direct production of electricity. Various devices have been developed to collect, concentrate, transport, store and con ert solar irradiation, such as the light pipe, optical fibers, optical solar concentrators, and luminescent solar concentrators (LSC). Many limitations such a the strict dependence on beam irradiation and difficulties for wiring remain in these daylighting devices. This thesis introduces …

Innovative Storm Water Best Management Practices : Their Influence On Landscape Architecture In North Texas, Jason Christopher Voight Sep 2009

Innovative Storm Water Best Management Practices : Their Influence On Landscape Architecture In North Texas, Jason Christopher Voight

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The land development process is essentially a three step progression consisting of input from developers who envision and fund a project, designers who translate the developer's vision into a buildable project, and the regulators who ensure that the project upholds, to the extent allowable by law, the health, safety, and welfare of mankind including the environment. As an outgrowth of this development model, the modern American city has evolved overtime into a sprawling metropolis, which has had a direct, deleterious impact on watersheds. To address these detrimental impacts, storm water regulations have been authored on federal, state, and local levels, which …

Price Discovery In Nebraska Cash Cattle Markets, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson Sep 2009

Price Discovery In Nebraska Cash Cattle Markets, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

Over three quarters of a million head of cattle were sold in livestock auction markets in or near the Nebraska Sandhills during the 2008 market year. These markets range from as far south as McCook, as far north as Valentine, as far west as Ogallala and as far east as Columbus. Each sale is associated with many different expectations by both buyers and sellers. Those expectations engage these stakeholders in a study of the markets. One of the most important questions that many of these market participants want to know the answer to is, “What are the key factors driving …

Effect Of Renin Angiotensin System Inhibition On Cardiovascular Sequelae In Elderly Hypertensive Patients With Insulin Resistance, Hala Zreikat Sep 2009

Effect Of Renin Angiotensin System Inhibition On Cardiovascular Sequelae In Elderly Hypertensive Patients With Insulin Resistance, Hala Zreikat

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Insulin resistance may play a pathogenic role in cardiovascular disease (CVD). Resistance to insulin has been associated with obesity, hypertension, and abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism. The constellation of these features among insulin resistant subjects has been called the metabolic syndrome. Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome increases with age and is most common in the elderly. Different criteria have been proposed to define the metabolic syndrome (ATP, WHO, AACE, EGIR). Current management of metabolic syndrome focuses on the specific risk factors that the patient may have without targeting the underlying insulin resistance. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEI) and Angiotensin …
