Davos In Dalian, Daniel A. Bell

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Last weekend, the World Economic Forum held its third “Annual Meeting of the New Champions” in Dalian. Known as “Summer Davos,” the event brought together over a thousand business and political leaders from around the world (aTelegraph story about Premier Wen Jiabao’s keynote speech can be found here; sina.com has complete coverage of the weekend here). China Beat contributor Daniel A. Bell attended the meeting, and shares his experiences as a lone philosopher in a sea of CEOs and political leaders.

My Davos experience did not get off to a good start. After a week-long research trip to Singapore, I …

Patient Perspectives On Dissatisfaction: A Qualitative Analysis Of Expectations For Hospital Care, Alicia Lee Sep 2009

Patient Perspectives On Dissatisfaction: A Qualitative Analysis Of Expectations For Hospital Care, Alicia Lee

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The measurement of patient satisfaction has taken a prominent role in the assessment of healthcare quality. Patient dissatisfaction, however, is not well understood. While the concept of satisfaction often proves vague and difficult to accurately measure, experiences with dissatisfaction are more tangible. In order to more fully understand dissatisfaction and its relationship to patients expectations, we conducted a qualitative analysis of patient suggestions for improvements in hospital care. Data were obtained from telephone interview surveys of adult patients discharged from Yale-New Haven Hospital between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008. Patients were asked: If there was one thing we …

Long-Term Immunity To Lethal Acute Or Chronic Type Ii Toxoplasma Gondii Infection Is Effectively Induced In Genetically Susceptible C57bl/6 Mice By Immunization With An Attenuated Type I Vaccine Strain, Jason P. Gigley, Barbara A. Fox, David J. Bzik Sep 2009

Bzik

Dartmouth Scholarship

C57BL/6 (B6) mice are genetically highly susceptible to chronic type II Toxoplasma gondii infections that invariably cause lethal toxoplasmic encephalitis. We examined the ability of an attenuated type I vaccine strain to elicit long-term immunity to lethal acute or chronic type II infections in susceptible B6 mice. Mice immunized with the type I cps1-1 vaccine strain were not susceptible to a lethal (100-cyst) challenge with the type II strain ME49. Immunized mice challenged with 10 ME49 cysts exhibited significant reductions in brain cyst and parasite burdens compared to naive mice, regardless of the route of challenge infection. Remarkably, cps1-1 strain-immunized …

Old Words, New Worlds: Revisiting The Modernity Of Tradition, Ananya Vajpeyi Sep 2009

Old Words, New Worlds: Revisiting The Modernity Of Tradition, Ananya Vajpeyi

History Faculty Publication Series

The Modernity of Sanskrit by Simona Sawhney ably makes the argument for an ethically vigilant, politically active, and intellectually timely criticism. Sawhney describes the crisis as she sees it, proposes a counter-challenge, and then proceeds to demonstrate how this post-Babri Masjid critical practice (to use her own point of departure) could be realised. She reads Kalidasa’s Śākuntalam and Meghadūtam, the Mahābhārata, the Rāmāyana and the Gītā in and of themselves, and also through 20th century writers in Hindi and Bengali, like Dharamvir Bharati, Mohan Rakesh, Hazariprasad Dwivedi, Rabindranath Tagore, Buddhadeb Bose, Jaishankar Prasad and Mohandas Gandhi (Gandhi is the odd …

Succination Of Thiol Groups In Adipose Tissue Proteins In Diabetes: Succination Inhibits Polymerization And Secretion Of Adiponectin, Norma Frizzell, Mathur Rajesh, Matthew J. Jepson, Ryoji Nagai, James A. Carson, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

S-(2-Succinyl)cysteine (2SC) is formed by reaction of the Krebs cycle intermediate fumarate with cysteine residues in protein, a process termed succination of protein. Both fumarate and succination of proteins are increased in adipocytes cultured in high glucose medium (Nagai, R., Brock, J. W., Blatnik, M., Baatz, J. E., Bethard, J., Walla, M. D., Thorpe, S. R., Baynes, J. W., and Frizzell, N. (2007) J. Biol. Chem. 282, 34219-34228). We show here that succination of protein is also increased in epididymal, mesenteric, and subcutaneous adipose tissue of diabetic (db/db) mice and that adiponectin is a major target for succination in both …

Bacterial microcompartments (BMCs) are polyhedral bodies, composed entirely of proteins, that function as organelles in bacteria; they promote subcellular processes by encapsulating and co-localizing targeted enzymes with their substrates. The best-characterized BMC is the carboxysome, a central part of the carbon-concentrating mechanism that greatly enhances carbon fixation in cyanobacteria and some chemoautotrophs. Here we report the first structural insights into the carboxysome of Prochlorococcus, the numerically dominant cyanobacterium in the world's oligotrophic oceans. Bioinformatic methods, substantiated by analysis of gene expression data, were used to identify a new carboxysome shell component, CsoS1D, in the genome of Prochlorococcus strain MED4; …

Inhibition Of The Calcium Plateau Following In Vitro Status Epilepticus Prevents The Development Of Spontaneous Recurrent Epileptiform Discharges, Nisha Nagarkatti Sep 2009

Inhibition Of The Calcium Plateau Following In Vitro Status Epilepticus Prevents The Development Of Spontaneous Recurrent Epileptiform Discharges, Nisha Nagarkatti

Theses and Dissertations

Status epilepticus (SE) is a major clinical emergency resulting in continuous seizure activity that can cause brain injury and many molecular and pathophysiologic changes leading to neuronal plasticity. The neuronal plasticity following SE-induced brain injury can initiate epileptogenesis and lead to the ultimate expression of acquired epilepsy (AE), characterized clinically by spontaneous, recurrent seizures. Epileptogenesis is the process wherein healthy brain tissue is transformed into hyperexcitable neuronal networks that produce AE. Understanding these alterations induced by brain injury is an important clinical challenge and can lend insight into possible new therapeutic targets to halt the development of AE. Currently there …

Motion Analysis Of Fluid Flow In A Spinning Disk Reactor, Valentina N. Korzhova Sep 2009

Motion Analysis Of Fluid Flow In A Spinning Disk Reactor, Valentina N. Korzhova

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The flow of a liquid film over a rapidly rotating horizontal disk has numerous industrial applications including pharmaceuticals, chemical engineering, bioengineering, etc. The analysis and control of complex fluid flows over a rapidly rotating horizontal disk is an important issue in the experimental fluid mechanics. The spinning disk reactor exploits the benefits of centrifugal force, which produces thin highly sheared films due to radial acceleration. The hydrodynamics of the film results in excellent fluid mixing and high heat or mass transfer rates.

This work focuses on developing a novel approach for fluid flow tracking and analysis. Specifically, the developed algorithm …
