Development Of A Mechanical System For Osteon Isolation, S. Ranglin, D. Das, A. Mingo, O. Ukinamemen, Gaffar Gailani, S. Cowin, L. Cardoso
Publications and Research
Osteons are small semi cylindrical hard tissues that exist in long bones of humans and some animals. Their diameter is in the range of 250 – 300 micrometers approximately. They contain the osteocytes which plays a role in bone mechanotransduction. The boundary that surrounds the osteon from outside is called the cement line. In a summer research project supported by CUNY-LSAMP a group of four students and three professors worked full summer to develop a system that can isolate the osteons thus a mechanical testing could be performed (stress relaxation test) to determine their poroelastic properties. Two sets of osteons …

The Short-Term Effect Of Whole Body Vibration Training On Sprint Start In Collegiate Athletes, Brad Roberts*, Iain Hunter‡, Ty Hopkins‡, Brent Feland‡
The Short-Term Effect Of Whole Body Vibration Training On Sprint Start In Collegiate Athletes, Brad Roberts*, Iain Hunter‡, Ty Hopkins‡, Brent Feland‡
International Journal of Exercise Science
Whole body vibration (WBV) is characterized by a vibratory stimulus emitted throughout the body through the use of a vibrating platform on which the subject stands. Studies have shown over 30% increases in maximal explosive strength such as maximal speed biceps curl as well as increases in maximum dynamic force such as maximal sitting bench pull as the result of vibration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of short term whole-body vibration on sprint starts among collegiate track athletes. On the first day eleven subjects were randomly assigned to either a non-vibration or vibration group for …
Balance Across Boundaries: Service Learning From An International Perspective, Teresa C. Fitts
Balance Across Boundaries: Service Learning From An International Perspective, Teresa C. Fitts
International Journal of Exercise Science
Service-Learning provides students, faculty and community partners an opportunity to go beyond classroom and laboratory instruction to the application of theoretical principles, and the development of civic responsibility by forging meaningful relationships with community partners. Service-learning also enables faculty to broaden the cultural sensitivity and international exposure of students by engaging students in directed, purposeful projects aimed at supporting the goals of both the college and the international partners. We have a unique opportunity in Exercise Science to make lasting changes and improve global conditions relating to student learning and the physical inactivity crisis. The purpose of this article is …

This work is a textual analysis of selected documentary films whose common theme is the inevitable discrepancy between the realities of the Vietnam and the 2003 Iraq War from the perspectives of the veterans and soldiers, and the assumed reality that is constructed in the media. It is at this point that the inextricable link between documentary cinema and reality proved fundamental to the developing discourse of the entire study ahead. Since the manner in which the world is both transformed and depicted strongly depends upon the tools available to the director, the technological innovations and the emergence of portable …

Why We Don't Understand The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds
Why We Don't Understand The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
This paper presents an assessment of current theories of law and their continuing failure to account in a convincing way for the rule of law as an ideal that guides and reassures modern democratic societies. It then explores the possibility that emerging understandings of human evolution and brain function may help us understand the process of convention making in a way that could reveal the underlying moral and epistemological context of law and allow us to identify a complete set of standards for the rule of law in human societies.

We recently showed that the exocytosis regulator Synaptotagmin (Syt) V is recruited to the nascent phagosome and remains associated throughout the maturation process. In this study, we investigated the possibility that Syt V plays a role in regulating interactions between the phagosome and the endocytic organelles. Silencing of Syt V by RNA interference revealed that Syt V contributes to phagolysosome biogenesis by regulating the acquisition of cathepsin D and the vesicular proton-ATPase. In contrast, recruitment of cathepsin B, the early endosomal marker EEA1 and the lysosomal marker LAMP1 to phagosomes was normal in the absence of Syt V. As Leishmania …

Surface-associated bacterial communities known as biofilms are an important source of nosocomial infections. Microorganisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa can colonize the abiotic surfaces of medical implants, leading to chronic infections that are difficult to eradicate. Our study demonstrates that polysorbate 80 (PS80), a surfactant commonly added to food and medicines, is able to inhibit biofilm formation by P. aeruginosa on a variety of surfaces, including contact lenses.

Background: Genome sequencing projects have been completed for several species representing four highly diverged holometabolous insect orders, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, and Lepidoptera. The striking evolutionary diversity of insects argues a need for efficient methods to apply genome information from such models to genetically uncharacterized species. Constructing conserved synteny maps plays a crucial role in this task. Here, we demonstrate the use of fluorescence in situ hybridization with bacterial artificial chromosome probes as a powerful tool for physical mapping of genes and comparative genome analysis in Lepidoptera, which have numerous and morphologically uniform holokinetic chromosomes.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We isolated 214 clones …
