There is provided a method of modifying vasoactivity by regulating a soluble Aβ pro-inflammatory pathway. Also provided is a method of modifying inflammatory reactions in microglia and neurons by regulating a soluble Aβ pro-inflammatory pathway. A method of treating patients with vascular disease by modifying an intracellular soluble Aβ pro-inflammatory pathway is also provided. A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of an effective amount of a soluble Aβ pro-inflammatory pathway regulator in a pharmaceutically effective carrier is also provided.

Dartmouth Scholarship
Cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae lacking Apq12, a nuclear envelope (NE)-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) integral membrane protein, are defective in assembly of nuclear pore complexes (NPCs), possibly because of defects in regulating membrane fluidity. We identified BRR6, which encodes an essential integral membrane protein of the NE-ER, as a dosage suppressor of apq12 Delta. Cells carrying the temperature-sensitive brr6-1 allele have been shown to have defects in nucleoporin localization, mRNA metabolism and nuclear transport. Electron microscopy revealed that brr6-1 cells have gross NE abnormalities and proliferation of the ER. brr6-1 cells were hypersensitive to compounds that affect membrane biophysical properties and to …

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), a lentivirus that infects horses, has been utilized as an animal model for the study of HIV. Furthermore, the disease associated with the equine lentivirus poses a significant challenge to veterinary medicine around the world. As with all lentiviruses, EIAV has been shown to have a high propensity for genomic sequence and antigenic variation, especially in its envelope (Env) proteins. Recent studies have demonstrated Env variation to be a major determinant of vaccine efficacy, emphasizing the importance of defining natural variation among field isolates of EIAV. To date, however, published EIAV sequences have been …

TRYPTOPHAN DEPLETION BY INDOLAMINE 2,3-DIOXYGENASE (IDO) CONTRIBUTES TO MEDIAL IMMUNOPRIVILEGE IN GRAFT ARTERIOSCLEROSIS. Amanda M. Silverio, Madison C. Cuffy, and George Tellides. Interdepartmental Program in Vascular Biology and Transplantation and the Departments of Surgery and Immunobiology, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Introduction: Since blood vessels and their endothelial lining are major stimulators and targets of the graft rejection response, the study of the differential immune properties of vascular cells is needed for the proper application of human vessels in the transplant setting. Experimental models of atherosclerosis and graft arteriosclerosis show leukocytes selectively infiltrating the intima and adventitia …

Resistant starch (RS) is a fermentable fiber that decreases dietary energy density and results in fermentation in the lower gut. The current studies examined the effect of RS on body fat loss in mice. In a 12 week study (study 1), the effect of two different types of RS on body fat was compared with two control diets (0% RS) in C57Bl/6J mice: regular control diet or the control diet that had energy density equal to that of the RS diet (EC). All testing diets had 7% (w/w) dietary fat. In a 16 week study (study 2), the effect of …

CAPILLARY BLOOD GAS MEASUREMENT AS A NOVEL MEANS OF ASSESSING FLAP PERFUSION IN FREE TISSUE TRANSFER. Aaron K. Remenschneider and Douglas A. Ross (Sponsored by Dr. Clarence Sasaki). Section of Otolaryngology, Department of Surgery, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. To demonstrate that in comparison to implantable O2 microelectrodes, Capillary Blood Gas measurements represent a reliable, accessible and easy method of identifying failing free flaps, and furthermore, to assess post-operative free-flap monitoring techniques nation-wide, determining the openness of surgeons to new surveillance modalities. Groin fasciocutaneous flaps were elevated in 10 rats and following arterial or venous occlusion, oxygen …
