Chemistry In Second Life, Andrew Lang, Jean-Claude Bradley
Chemistry In Second Life, Andrew Lang, Jean-Claude Bradley
College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship
This review will focus on the current level on chemistry research, education, and visualization possible within the multi-user virtual environment of Second Life. We discuss how Second Life has been used as a platform for the interactive and collaborative visualization of data from molecules and proteins to spectra and experimental data. We then review how these visualizations can be scripted for immersive educational activities and real-life collaborative research. We also discuss the benefits of the social networking affordances of Second Life for both chemists and chemistry students.

Debacle In The Desert: Accident Highlights Chile's Energy Problems, Benjamin Witte-Lebhar
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
A high-profile mishap involving an experimental electricity project near one of Chile's top tourist attractions has exposed serious shortcomings in the country's laissez-faire approach to energy production. Last year environmental authorities in Region II, an area of northern Chile that contains the high-plains Atacama desert, gave energy company Geotermica del Norte (GDN) permission to conduct exploratory drilling on what promised to be the country's first geothermal electricity plant. Geothermal facilities harness energy from underground hot springs (steam) to push conventional turbines. Considered a renewable and environmentally friendly energy source, the technique is used in more than 20 countries worldwide but …

Book Review: Carl Cranor, Toxic Torts: Science, Law, And The Possibility Of Justice, David S. Caudill
Book Review: Carl Cranor, Toxic Torts: Science, Law, And The Possibility Of Justice, David S. Caudill
Working Paper Series
Carl F. Cranor’s Toxic Torts: Science, Law, and the Possibility of Justice is a sustained, comprehensive argument that the Daubert gatekeeping regime has tilted the playing field against injured plaintiffs in toxic tort litigation. More generally, Cranor joins those who argue that the Daubert regime has not fared well in practice. Complex scientific evidence is not handled well in trials because scientific methods, data, and inferential reasoning are not well understood by gatekeeping judges. Cranor’s goal is to help solve this problem by offering a detailed description of the patterns of reasoning, evidence collection, and inference in nonlegal scientific settings. …
The Effectiveness Of Imagery Interventions On The Vocabulary Learning Of Second Grade Students, Marisa Cohen
The Effectiveness Of Imagery Interventions On The Vocabulary Learning Of Second Grade Students, Marisa Cohen
NERA Conference Proceedings 2009
This study investigated the impact of imagery interventions on the vocabulary acquisition abilities of second grade students. Participants were randomly assigned to three different conditions: word only, dual coding, and image creation. Students were measured on the amount of words they successfully acquired. While no significance was shown between the interventions across word categories, a significant difference was found between the image creation and word only interventions within the science terms category. Students reported that the imagery interventions facilitated the ease with which they learned the words. This has implications as to the successful presentation of vocabulary in the classroom.
What's Inside The Pandora's Box Of Student Teaching? Lessons Learned From Student Teachers Education Personnel Preparation, Lucia Buttaro
What's Inside The Pandora's Box Of Student Teaching? Lessons Learned From Student Teachers Education Personnel Preparation, Lucia Buttaro
NERA Conference Proceedings 2009
The purpose of this critical study is to improve Adelphi University's student teaching program protocol in order to enhance future teacher candidates and cooperating teachers, standard procedural information, as well as factors that contribute to teacher candidate success. Fourteen Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) teacher candidates were observed, completed journals, and shared their personal experiences in their student teaching placement. Data gathered from a variety of sources illuminated the need to improve communication and collaboration between the parties of the student teaching triad (university supervisor, cooperating teacher, and teacher candidate). In order to develop a strong partnership and …
