Mechanical Behavior And Length Adaptation Of Rabbit Bladder Smooth Muscle, Atheer Almasri
Mechanical Behavior And Length Adaptation Of Rabbit Bladder Smooth Muscle, Atheer Almasri
Theses and Dissertations
Overactive bladder (OAB), involuntary contractions during bladder filling, is a common condition affecting 17% of the adult population worldwide, and in the U.S. ranks ahead of diabetes in a list of the 10 most common chronic disorders (Mullins 2009). Mechanical mechanisms contributing to OAB are not completely understood and because of the unique function and broad volume range of the bladder, there may be mechanical characteristics that distinguish detrusor smooth muscle (DSM) in bladder from other smooth muscles. Recent studies have shown that the length-passive tension curve in DSM exhibits adjustable passive stiffness (APS) characterized by a passive curve that …

Good news: The Denver City Council is poised to enact the first comprehensive update to the Denver zoning code in 53 years. This new code could put Denver in the forefront as a progressive planning city and could serve as a blueprint for communities throughout the nation. Bad news: While the new code’s context- and form-based approach may improve transportation efficiencies in some parts of the city, in other respects it represents a step backward for sustainability, specifically for solar access.

Among dietary factors, learning and behavior are influenced not only by nutrients, but also by exposure to toxic food contaminants such as mercury that can disrupt metabolic processes and alter neuronal plasticity. Neurons lacking in plasticity are a factor in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and mental retardation. Essential nutrients help maintain normal neuronal plasticity. Nutritional deficiencies, including deficiencies in the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the amino acid methionine, and the trace minerals zinc and selenium, have been shown to influence neuronal function and produce defects in neuronal plasticity, as well as impact behavior …

Pigs challenged with hypoglycosylated variants of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) major surface protein GP5 exhibited increased production of PRRSV-neutralizing antibodies relative to the levels of neutralizing antibodies produced by pigs immunized with wild type (wt) or glycosylated GP5. This invention provides for methods of obtaining improved immune responses in pigs to PRRSV, compositions useful for obtaining the improved immune responses as well as isolated polynucleotides that encode hypoglycosylated variants of PRRSV major surface protein GP5.

An Integrated Recording System Using An Asynchronous Pulse Representation, Sheng Feng Yen, Jie Xu, Manu Rastogi, John G. Harris, Jose C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A neuronal recording system for brain-machine interfaces (BMI) based on asynchronous biphasic pulse coding is described. It demonstrates the first step in the development of a complete implanted wireless solution with fully integrated circuit architecture. A recording experiment comparing in parallel a commercial recording system (Tucker-Davis Technology (TDT)) and the UF's custom solution (FWIRE) is set up to compare performance. The novel aspect of the UF system is that the analog signal is represented by an asynchronous pulse train, which provides a low-power, low-bandwidth, noise-resistant means for coding and transmission. Taking advantage of neural firing features, the pulse-based approach uses …

Endogenous N-3 Fatty Acids Protect Ovariectomy Induced Bone Loss By Attenuating Osteoclastogenesis, Md Mizanur Rahman, Arunabh Bhattacharya, Jameela Banu, Jing X. Kang, Gabriel Fernandes
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Beneficial effects of n-3 fatty acids (FA) on bone mineral density (BMD) have been reported in mice, rats and human beings, but the precise mechanisms involved have not been described. This study used the Fat-1 mouse, a transgenic model that synthesizes n-3 FA from n-6 FA to directly determine if outcome of bone health were correlated with n-3 FA. Ovariectomized (Ovx) and sham operated wild-type (WT) and Fat-1 mice were fed an AIN-93M diet containing 10% corn oil for 24 weeks. BMD was analysed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Fat-1 Ovx mice exhibited significantly lower level of osteotropic factors like …

Jaringan SUTET Perusahaan Listrik Negara banyak melalui daerah pemukiman.

Five New Species Of Peltonotus Burmeister (Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Cyclocephalini) From Southeast Asia, Mary Liz Jameson, Kaoru Wada
Insecta Mundi
The Southeast Asian scarab beetle genus Peltonotus Burmeister (Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae) is associated with aroid flowers and possesses a unique, articulated maxillary tooth. We describe five new species of Peltonotus: P. animus and P. cybele from Sumatra, P. favonius from Vietnam, P. mushiyaus from Borneo, and P. tigerus from Thailand. The circumscription of P. karubei Muramoto is broadened to include new color variation, and the body size range for the genus is increased with Peltonotus mushiyaus, n. sp., now being the smallest member of the genus. We provide an amended key to species, distribution maps, diagnoses and accompanying comparative …

Xyloryctes Hope, 1837 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Oryctini) In The United States. Qui Es Et Ubi Fuisti Et Quo Vadis?, Brett C. Ratcliffe
Insecta Mundi
Two species of Xyloryctes occur in the United States: X. jamaicensis (Drury) and X. thestalus Bates. Identification and distribution of these species has long been confused but is reviewed and clarified here. Xyloryctes jamaicensis occurs only in the eastern half of the U.S. and not in the southwestern U.S. as previously thought, while X. thestalus occurs in Guatemala and southern Mexico northwards to the southwestern United States. This hypothesis is corroborated by biogeographical and host plant data. Three new synonyms are listed for X. thestalus: X. faunus Casey 1915, X. hebes Casey 1915, and X. thestalus borealis Endrödi. The …

Effects Of Traditional And Digital Media On Student Learning In Space Design, Jiang Lu
Effects Of Traditional And Digital Media On Student Learning In Space Design, Jiang Lu
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU
Jiang Lu’s chapter focuses on a hot issue in the teaching of space design – should students be trained primarily in traditional (pen and pencil) design techniques, or should their training primarily be in digital media (through such programs as AutoCAD and SketchUp)? Jiang created a set of design projects for her studio design class and gave the students wide latitude in choosing the techniques they would use. She then examined the choices they made and surveyed her students to get their perspectives on why they did what they did. Thus, one of the benefits of this chapter is that …
