Arrow's Theorem And The Exclusive Shareholder Franchise, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew T. Bodie
Arrow's Theorem And The Exclusive Shareholder Franchise, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew T. Bodie
All Faculty Scholarship
In this essay, we contest one of the main arguments for restricting corporate board voting to shareholders. In justifying the limitation of the franchise to shareholders, scholars have repeatedly turned to social choice theory—specifically, Arrow’s theorem—to justify the exclusive shareholder franchise. Citing to the theorem, corporate law commentators have argued that lumping different groups of stakeholders together into the electorate would result in a lack of consensus and, ultimately, the lack of coherence that attends intransitive social choices, perhaps even leading the corporation to self-destruct. We contend that this argument is misguided. First, we argue that scholars have greatly overestimated …
From Ballots To Bullets: District Of Columbia V. Heller And The New Civil Rights, Anders Walker
From Ballots To Bullets: District Of Columbia V. Heller And The New Civil Rights, Anders Walker
All Faculty Scholarship
This article posits that the Supreme Court's recent Second Amendment ruling District of Columbia v. Heller is a victory for civil rights, but not in the sense that most activists from the 1960s would recognize. Rather than a product of mid-century legal liberalism, Heller marks the culmination of almost forty years of coalition-based popular constitutionalism aimed at transforming the individual right to bear arms and the common law right to "employ deadly force in self-defense" into new civil rights. The implications of this are potentially great. By declaring the right to use deadly force in self-defense an "essential" right, the …

Effective Maxillary Protraction: Hyrax Expansion Appliance Vs. Double-Hinged Expansion Appliance, Thuy B. Do-Delatour
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Patients with a skeletal Class III malocclusion may have one of the following conditions: midface deficiency and/or mandibular hypertrophy/prognathism. If modification of the skeletal Class III growth pattern is not effectively accomplished at an early age via maxillary protraction, then orthognathic surgery would be required to help correct the skeletal Class III malocclusion. Some of the more serious risks associated with orthognathic surgery include parasthesia, bone and tissue necrosis, and possibly death. However, if one is able to effectively protract the maxilla, the need for anterior-posterior correction of the maxilla via orthognathic surgery will be minimized if not eliminated.;The purpose …
The Effects Of Aquaculture Production Noise On The Growth, Hearing, Disease Resistance, And Survival Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) And Methods For Minimizing Noise In Fiberglass Aquaculture Tanks, John W. Davidson Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Intensive aquaculture systems, particularly recirculating systems, often require noise producing equipment such as pumps, blowers, and filters that inadvertently increase sound levels within the culture environment. These systems are often very effective at culturing healthy, fast growing fish; however, the potential impacts of underwater noise on fish within intensive aquaculture systems have not been evaluated. Limited research suggests that subjecting fish to noise could result in impairment of the auditory system, reduced growth rates, and increased stress. The studies presented within this manuscript were conducted to gain a better understanding of aquaculture production noise and its potential impacts on rainbow …

The Role Of Nadph Oxidase In Blood -Brain Barrier Dysfunction Following Stroke In Aged Rats, Kimberly Kelly
The Role Of Nadph Oxidase In Blood -Brain Barrier Dysfunction Following Stroke In Aged Rats, Kimberly Kelly
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stroke is the leading cause of long-term adult disability and the third leading cause of death in the United States. More that 72% of stroke victims are over the age of 65, yet most studies utilize young animals. Aged rats suffer exacerbated stroke volume and inflammation, as well as worsened functional outcome when compared to young adult rats. While the blood brain barrier (BBB) remains intact with age, it becomes more susceptible to external factors. BBB permeability in the penumbra appears acutely, 20 min after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in aged rats. Importantly, BBB permeability is earlier and more …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Interactions Between Environmental Regulations And Economic Growth, Chali Nondo
An Empirical Analysis Of The Interactions Between Environmental Regulations And Economic Growth, Chali Nondo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the relationship between environmental regulations and economic growth in the Appalachian Region. The study employs county attainment status data as a proxy for environmental regulations and allows the cross-sectional variation of the attainment variable. Cognizant of the fact that air pollution emanates from a variety of sources, the study assumes that per capita income, population, employment, and environmental regulations are jointly determined, which is the major distinction from previous studies which have assumed a unidirectional relationship between environmental regulations and economic growth.;Using endogenous growth theory, a theoretical model is developed that highlights the role of environmental regulations …
Abnormal Ecg Search In Long-Term Electrocardiographic Recordings From An Animal Model Of Heart Failure, Pisut Raphisak
Abnormal Ecg Search In Long-Term Electrocardiographic Recordings From An Animal Model Of Heart Failure, Pisut Raphisak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Five million Americans suffer from heart failure. Advances in portable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring systems and large data storage space allow the ECG to be recorded continuously for long periods. Long-term monitoring could potentially lead to better diagnosis and treatment if the progression of heart failure could be followed. The challenge is to analyze the sheer mass of data. Manual analysis using the classical methods is impossible. In this dissertation, a framework for analysis of long-term ECG recording and methods for searching an abnormal ECG are presented.;The …

The Roles Of The Phosducin Family Proteins In The Regulation Of Heterotrimeric G Proteins In Vertebrate Photoreceptors, Hongman Song
The Roles Of The Phosducin Family Proteins In The Regulation Of Heterotrimeric G Proteins In Vertebrate Photoreceptors, Hongman Song
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Phosducin (Pdc) and phosducin-like protein 1 (PhLP1) are homologous proteins of the phosducin gene family that specifically interact with heterotrimeric G proteins. Both Pdc and PhLP1 are expressed in photoreceptors, sensory neurons of the retina responsible for acquisition of visual information; however their functions in these cells remains enigmatic. Photoreceptors maintain remarkably high and tightly controlled levels of the heterotrimeric G protein, transducin, utilized by these cells for visual signal transduction. Our central hypothesis was that Pdc and PhLP1 are engaged in the maintenance of transducin homeostasis in the photoreceptors.;To test this hypothesis, we have studied phosphorylation of Pdc, which …

Examining The Protective Effects Of Sesamol On Oxidative Stress Associated Blood -Brain Barrier Dysfunction In Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats, Reyna Vangilder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many studies point to vascular dysfunction as an underlying cause for the increased incidence of cognitive dysfunction and risk for development of Alzheimer's disease during diabetes. Vascular dysfunction is not an uncommon occurrence in patients with diabetes and microvascular dysfunction commonly leads to clinical complications such as blindness, peripheral neuropathy, and kidney failure. Microangiopathies of the retina, kidney, and peripheral nerves have been well-characterized; however, the effects of diabetes on blood-brain barrier (BBB) function have been understudied.;Pathophysiological changes defining microvascular dysfunction include basement membrane thickening, cytoskeleton rearrangement, and increased paracellular leakage. Increased paracellular leakage of the BBB suggests a functional …

Mobile Speed Estimation For Broadband Wireless Communications Over Rician Fading Channels, Y. Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao
Mobile Speed Estimation For Broadband Wireless Communications Over Rician Fading Channels, Y. Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to estimate mobile speed for broadband wireless communications, which often encounter large number of fading channel taps causing severe intersymbol interference. Different from existing algorithms, which commonly assume that the fading channel coefficients are available for the speed estimators, the proposed algorithm is based on the received signals which contain unknown transmitted data, unknown frequency selective fading channel coefficients possibly including line-of-sight (LOS) components, and random receiver noise. Theoretical analysis is first carried out from the received signals, and a practical algorithm is proposed based on the analytical results. The algorithm employs …

Nuclear Morphometry In Relation To Tumor Grade In Canine Spontaneous Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas, Radostin Simeonov
Nuclear Morphometry In Relation To Tumor Grade In Canine Spontaneous Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas, Radostin Simeonov
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In a retrospective study on cytological specimens from 17 dogs with histologically confirmed cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, the morphometric variables were studied and compared to tumors' nuclear grade. The morphometric parameters evaluated in this study were mean nuclear area (MNA, µm2), mean nuclear perimeter (MNP, µm), mean nuclear diameter (D mean, µm), minimum nuclear diameter (D min, µm), and maximum nuclear diameter (D max, µm). Associations between MNA, MNP, D mean, D min, and D max and tumors' grade were assessed using the ANOVA/LSD test (Statistica 6.0, StatSoft, USA) at a level of significance of P < 0.05. The result indicated an increase in the mean values of the nuclear parameters with increasing tumor grade. In the cases examined, significant differences in MNA, MNP, and D mean occurred between tumors in all grades. Besides, no significant differences in D max (between grade I-II and II-III) and D min (grade II-III) were found. In conclusion, nuclear morphometry could be used as an additional tool for differentiating nuclear grade in canine cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas.
