Identification Of Phytochemical Constituents Of Aegle Marmelos Responsible For Antimicrobial Activity Against Selected Pathogenic Organisms, D. Venkatesan, C. M. Karrunakarn, S. Selva Kumar, P. T. Palani Swamy
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Antimicrobial activity and phytochemical constituents of an ethanolic extract of Aegle marmelos were investigated. The phytochemical screening of the crude extract revealed the presence of Alkaloids, Cardiac glycosides, Terpenoids, Saponins, Tannis, Flavonoids, and Steroids. The crude ethanolic extract was tested for antimicrobial activity against gram positive organisms of Bacillus subtilis (NCIM: 3471), Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM: 2079), gram negative Escherichia coli (NCIM: 2065) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCIM: 2200) at different concentrations levels of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mg/ml. At the 2.5 mg/ml concentration, gram negative Escherichia coli exhibits a zone of inhibition about 25.7mm; Pseudomonas aeruginosa 19.9mm; gram positive …

I want to begin by recognizing that the ideas I will address here may not be recognizable to most, but they are critical to all. I am aware of a long history of people who were persecuted, murdered, dismissed, or ignored because their declarations were not convenient to the power' structures of their day. Galileo was put in jail because his ideas were threatening to the status quo. His integrity required that he be an honest scientist despite the consequences and he would not be silent. I don't claim to be a Galileo, but I would say that a world …

How The Conception Of Knowledge Influences Our Educational Practices: Toward A Philosophical Understanding Of Epistemology In Education, James Magrini
How The Conception Of Knowledge Influences Our Educational Practices: Toward A Philosophical Understanding Of Epistemology In Education, James Magrini
Philosophy Scholarship
This paper explores how the conception and valuation of the knowledge within our educational practices determines the planning, writing, and implementation of the curriculum. There is a pressing need for educators to philosophically and systematically understand the relationship between the foundational epistemological beliefs that ground a curriculum and its relationship to forming the notions of competency, pedagogy, and the methods for evaluating and assessing student progress. These issues are not only relevant, but crucial when attempting to justify a particular conception of education, which relates directly to the student's potential for intellectual growth and social development. It may be argued …

The Effect Of Floor Density On Growth Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of French Guinea Broilers, Samuel N. Nahashon, Nathaniel Adefope, Abravi Amenyenu, James E. Tyus Ii, D. Wright
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
The floor density required for optimal growth performance of different avian species and varieties is highly variable. Little is known of the required floor density for optimum performance of the French guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) broiler. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of varying floor densities on growth performance and carcass characteristics of the French guinea broiler. In 3 replicates, 687 one-day-old French guinea keets were weighed individually and randomly assigned to floor pens covered with pine wood shavings at 69, 60, 53, and 47 birds/pen, equivalent to densities of 15.6, 13.6, 12, and 10.7 birds/m2, …

The Cultural Effects Of The Narcoeconomy In Rural Mexico, James H. Mcdonald Ph.D.
The Cultural Effects Of The Narcoeconomy In Rural Mexico, James H. Mcdonald Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This essay describes the cultural effects of drug trafficking on a town in rural Mexico. A variety of ethnographic scenes reveal the rapidly changing social imagination as new forms of consumption create new opportunities for identity formation. However, because these new consumer forms are expensive, and therefore inaccessible to the majority of community members, a type of cultural exclusion is at work. In this ordinary town, there are extraordinary forms of consumption: large, lavish houses; high-stakes gambling at local cockfights; a new urban-oriented consumer culture; and new farmer entrepreneurs. All were underwritten by narco-activities. These new forms of consumption challenge …
Population, Rural Development, And Land Use Among Settler Households In An Agricultural Frontier In Guatemala’S Maya Biosphere Reserve, David Carr Ph.D.
Population, Rural Development, And Land Use Among Settler Households In An Agricultural Frontier In Guatemala’S Maya Biosphere Reserve, David Carr Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Guatemala was among the world’s leaders in deforestation during the 1990s at a rate of 2% per annum. Much of Guatemala’s recent forest loss has occurred in the emerging agricultural frontiers of the Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR), the heart of the largest contiguous tropical forest in Central America—La Selva Maya. This paper presents data from 241 heads of households and 219 partners of household heads from a geographically stratified sample of eight (of 28) communities in the Sierra de Lacandón National Park (SLNP), the most ecologically biodiverse region in La Selva Maya and a core conservation zone of the MBR. …

Compassion: Why It Is Better To Eat Fish, Knowledge@Smu
Compassion: Why It Is Better To Eat Fish, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Compassion was probably the farthest notion from Colonel Sanders’ mind when he became the global poster boy for delicious fried chicken. He had started his business in the early twentieth century – a period marked by the great depression and two world wars. Prejudices festered under the hostile global climate then, where little consideration was given to the suffering of human beings, much less animals. However, with the progress of time, scientific advancements have urged us, increasingly, to be kinder to fellow humans, animals, the environment… and that we really ought to be munching on fried fish instead.

Gaming The Network Poetic: Networking And Code In Art Games, Joshua A. Fishburn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Videogames have historically used networking either to connect players for competition or cooperation or to provide an ephemeral connection to allow the upload, comparison, or assessment of single-player achievement data. The majority of videogames take place on a screen and on established platforms each of which have physical, technical, and sociocultural constraints that dictate how a player will interact. Recent art games, such as those by Jason Rohrer and the Atari VCS games of Ian Bogost highlight experiments in a more focused use of the medium from concept to interaction, both between the player and the software but also foregrounding …

Exhaustive Exercise Training Enhances Aerobic Capacity In American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), John Eme, Tomasz Owerkowicz, June Gwalthney, Jason M. Blank, Bryan C. Rourke, James W. Hicks
Exhaustive Exercise Training Enhances Aerobic Capacity In American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), John Eme, Tomasz Owerkowicz, June Gwalthney, Jason M. Blank, Bryan C. Rourke, James W. Hicks
Biological Sciences
The oxygen transport system in mammals is extensively remodelled in response to repeated bouts of activity, but many reptiles appear to be ‘metabolically inflexible’ in response to exercise training. A recent report showed that estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) increase their maximum metabolic rate in response to exhaustive treadmill training, and in the present study, we confirm this response in another crocodilian, American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). We further specify the nature of the crocodilian training response by analysing effects of training on aerobic [citrate synthase (CS)] and anaerobic [lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)] enzyme activities in selected skeletal muscles, …

Effects Of Composted And Raw Manure And Ammonium Sulfate Applications On The Chemical Properties Of The Soils At Chorro Creek Ranch, San Luis Obispo, Ca., Renee Nall,, Craig Stubler, Christopher Appel, Tanner Campbell, Jose Gomez, Nathan Lurie, Russell Morgan, J. J. Scurich
Earth and Soil Sciences
The majority of agricultural systems, especially large-scale, require inputs of nutrients. In addition, many large scale dairies produce vast quantities of waste that can be potentially recycled as nutrients. This study was conducted to determine the differences in properties of soils amended with manure, compost, and fertilizer, and to assess implications of using animal waste products for forage crop fertilization. Forage crops, wheat, barley, and oat mix have been grown on the Chorro Creek Ranch part of Cal Poly farmland, for 15 years. Ammonium sulfate fertilizer has been applied at a rate of 200 lbs/acre/year for the past 4 years. …
