Interrogating Virginia Woolf And The British Suffrage Movement, Gwen Trowbridge Anderson Nov 2009

Interrogating Virginia Woolf And The British Suffrage Movement, Gwen Trowbridge Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Interrogating Virginia Woolf and the British Suffrage Movement Gwen Trowbridge Anderson ABSTRACT Much has been written about Virginia Woolf's involvement with feminism and women's rights, but there has been far less exploration about her ties to suffrage. Many of her friends and family are involved in this exploration: Vanessa Stephen Bell, Ethel Smyth, and the Pankhursts (Emmeline, Sylvia, and Cristobel). Other important figures who are relevant to Woolf's work are Sonia Delaunay, Lewis Carroll, and Edmund Spenser. Important concepts like the New Woman, the suffrage movement, feminism, and women's rights are vital to understanding Woolf's involvement with suffrage. This dissertation …

Design And Development Of A Pvdf Sensor To Monitor Intracranial Pressure (Icp), Vivek Vijaywargi Nov 2009

Design And Development Of A Pvdf Sensor To Monitor Intracranial Pressure (Icp), Vivek Vijaywargi

Theses and Dissertations

Monitoring ICP non-invasively is a challenge. A novel method to measure ICP using actuators and sensors has been proposed where the skull is vibrated at high frequencies and the receiving signal is measured at the surface eyelid. A design of experiments approach is used to develop the sensor part of the ICP monitoring device so that gain can be maximized using factors such as area, thickness, electrode, and applied pressure. Statistical analysis showed that thickness has the biggest effect on overall gain. Numerical analysis confirmed these results. In addition, sensor packaging is optimized to minimize dampening of the signal and …

Mechanisms Of Hematopoietic-Mesenchymal Cell Activation, Justin Lemieux Nov 2009

Mechanisms Of Hematopoietic-Mesenchymal Cell Activation, Justin Lemieux

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

As the prevalence of osteoporosis is expected to increase over the next few decades, the development of novel therapeutic strategies to combat this disorder becomes clinically imperative. These efforts draw extensively from an expanding body of knowledge pertaining to the physiologic mechanisms of skeletal homeostasis. To this body of knowledge, we contribute that cells of hematopoietic lineage may play a crucial role in balancing osteoblastic bone formation against osteoclastic resorption. Specifically, our laboratory has previously demonstrated that megakaryocytes can induce osteoblast proliferation in vitro, but do so only when direct cell-to-cell contact is permitted. To further investigate the nature of …

Thinking Outside The Black Box: Current Policies And Problems With The Fda's Highest Drug Safety Warning, Kylene Halloran Nov 2009

Thinking Outside The Black Box: Current Policies And Problems With The Fda's Highest Drug Safety Warning, Kylene Halloran

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Based on data collected from clinical trials and post-approval surveillance systems, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issues warnings to communicate increasingly dangerous and/ or preventable risks to doctors and their patients. The black box warning, the highest of all warnings issued by the FDA, emphasizes risks the FDA has deemed are critical to safe use of the drug. The warning has numerous implications for the pharmaceutical companies and physicians. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the infrastructure of the adverse effect detection system, the effects of the Food and Drug Amendments Act (FDAAA) of 2007, and the …

Disease Predilection And Molecular Heterogeneity Of The Murine Aorta Are Intrinsic To The Vessel Wall, Sheng-Fu Lo Nov 2009

Disease Predilection And Molecular Heterogeneity Of The Murine Aorta Are Intrinsic To The Vessel Wall, Sheng-Fu Lo

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis or aneurysmal disease preferentially affect different parts of the arterial system. Despite this heterogeneous pattern of disease within the arterial system, the contribution of different smooth muscle cell phenotypes to this pattern has not been well studied. We investigated aortic disease susceptibility and epigenetic differences within different regions of the murine aorta. Quantitative analyses showed more numerous atherosclerotic plaques and larger aneurysms in the ascending aorta compared to the descending thoracic aorta in apoE-/- and fbn1C1039G/+ mice, respectively. Interferon-γ and transforming growth factor-β responses, characteristic of these disease processes, were greater in the ascending vs. …

The Importance Of Fallback Foods In Primate Ecology And Evolution, Paul J. Constantino, Barth W. Wright Nov 2009

The Importance Of Fallback Foods In Primate Ecology And Evolution, Paul J. Constantino, Barth W. Wright

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

The role of fallback foods in shaping primate ranging, socioecology, and morphology has recently become a topic of particular interest to biological anthropologists. Although the use of fallback resources has been noted in the ecological and primatological literature for a number of decades, few attempts have been made to define fallback foods or to explore the utility of this concept for primate evolutionary biologists and ecologists. As a preface to this special issue of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology devoted to the topic of fallback foods in primate ecology and evolution, we discuss the development and use of the …

Citation Analysis Of Doctoral Works Submitted To The Department Of Animal Science, University Of Ibadan, Nigeria, Wole Michael Olatokun

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The objective of this study was to carry out a citation analysis of doctoral theses submitted to the department of Animal science, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, with a view to finding possible relationships between citing, cited articles and authors (doctoral students). The research design used was the descriptive survey with the research elements for the study being the theses submitted for the award of doctoral degrees during the period 2000-2007. Frequency and percentage distributions (presented in charts, tables, and graphs) and measures of central tendency were used to analyse data. Findings showed that journals, books and conference papers ranked the …

Economies Of Desire: Fair Use And Marketplace Assumptions, Rebecca Tushnet Nov 2009

Economies Of Desire: Fair Use And Marketplace Assumptions, Rebecca Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

At the moment that “incentives” for creation meet “preferences” for the same, the economic account of copyright loses its explanatory power. This piece explores the ways in which the desire to create can be excessive, beyond rationality, and free from the need for economic incentive. Psychological and sociological concepts can do more to explain creative impulses than classical economics. As a result, a copyright law that treats creative activity as a product of economic incentives can miss the mark and harm what it aims to promote. The idea of abundance—even overabundance—in creativity can help define the proper scope of copyright …

Decreased Replication Origin Activity In Temporal Transition Regions, Zeqiang Guan, Christina M. Hughes, Settapong Kosiyatrakul, Paolo Norio, Ranjan Sen, Steven Fiering

Dartmouth Scholarship

In the mammalian genome, early- and late-replicating domains are often separated by temporal transition regions (TTRs) with novel properties and unknown functions. We identified a TTR in the mouse immunoglobulin heavy chain (Igh) locus, which contains replication origins that are silent in embryonic stem cells but activated during B cell development. To investigate which factors contribute to origin activation during B cell development, we systematically modified the genetic and epigenetic status of the endogenous Igh TTR and used a single-molecule approach to analyze DNA replication. Introduction of a transcription unit into the Igh TTR, activation of gene transcription, …
