Particle-Chemical Interactions And Environmental Chemodynamics Of Fine And Ultrafine Particles In A Natural Disaster Scenario, Nicholas A. Ashley
Particle-Chemical Interactions And Environmental Chemodynamics Of Fine And Ultrafine Particles In A Natural Disaster Scenario, Nicholas A. Ashley
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The interactions of fine and ultrafine particles with chemicals play a dominant role in determining the mobility and availability of pollutants in the environment. Fine particles in sediments can sequester chemicals from the water column, and release volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds to the gas phase upon exposure to air. Ultrafine particles which are photoreactive can degrade these vapor-phase contaminants, and may transform the molecules into species which are more toxic or hazardous than the parent. As the widespread, commercial use of ultrafine particles becomes more common, understanding the chemodynamics of these particles and their interactions with chemicals in the …

The Role Of Yusef Akbar Azziz Al-Nassar Gamel El-Fayoumy And The Construction Of Specific Relationships In The Play The Last Days Of Judas Iscariot By Stephen Adly Guirgis, Kaluhath Kenneth De Abrew
LSU Master's Theses
The following document consists of a written interpretation of an actor’s work on approaching and eventually performing the role of Yusef Akbar Azziz Al-Nassar Gamel El-Fayoumy in a production of The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. This play was written by Stephen Adly Guirgis and performed at the Louisiana State University Hatcher Theatre in 2008. A specific focus is given to the separate and significantly different relationships between El-Fayoumy and ten other characters. The document also represents an actor’s struggle to be clear and precise while being free and imaginative.
Ecological Risk Models For Visceral Leishmaniais [Sic] In Bahia, Brazil And Diagnosis Of Trypanosoma Cruzi Infection In Dogs In South Central Louisiana, Prixia Nieto
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Three predictive models were developed within a geographic information system using earth observing satellite remote sensing (RS), the Genetic Algorithm for Rule-Set Prediction (GARP) and the growing degree day-water budget (GDD-WB) concept to predict the distribution and potential risk of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the State of Bahia, Brazil. The objective was to define the environmental suitability of the disease as well as to obtain a deeper understanding of the eco-epidemiology of VL by associating environmental and climatic variables with disease prevalence. The RS, the GARP model and the GDD-WB model, using different analysis approaches and with the same human …
An Integrated Agent-Based Microsimulation Model For Hurricane Evacuation In New Orleans, Wei Liang
An Integrated Agent-Based Microsimulation Model For Hurricane Evacuation In New Orleans, Wei Liang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Mass evacuation of urban areas due to hurricanes is a critical problem that requires extensive basic and applied research. Knowing the accurate evacuation time needed for the entire region in advance such that the evacuation order can be issued on a timely basis is crucial for the officials. Microsimulation modeling, which focuses on the characteristics of individual motorists and travel behavior, has been used widely in traffic simulation as it can lead to the most accurate result. However, because detailed driver response modeling and path processing must be incorporated, vehicle-based microscopic models have always been used only to simulate small …
Matrix Metalloproteinases In The Equine Systemic Inflammatory Response: Implications For Equine Laminitis, Lee Ann Fugler
Matrix Metalloproteinases In The Equine Systemic Inflammatory Response: Implications For Equine Laminitis, Lee Ann Fugler
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Laminitis is a crippling and often life-threatening disease of the equine foot. Soft tissue damage characteristic of this disease has been associated with increased MMP activity. Therefore, it seems likely that MMPIs could be potential therapeutic agents for laminitis. Further characterization of equine MMPs and evaluation of the effectiveness of MMPIs in the horse are needed. Equine MMP-9 was harvested from neutrophils, purified by affinity chromatography, and evaluated using western blotting and gelatin zymography. The Biotrak MMP-9 Activity Assay was evaluated for use with equine samples using equine neutrophil MMP-9 as a standard, and was determined to have insufficient sensitivity …

Response Of Selected Warm-Season Turfgrasses And Ornamental Monocots To Short-Term, High Concentration, Ozone Fumigation, Lou Ann Mcknight
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ozone (O3), one of the most powerful oxidants known, is phytotoxic at high levels in the troposphere, or ground-level. Effects of acute ozone exposure for two consecutive days was examined on Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon), centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides), zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica), St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum), Liriope muscari ‘Big Blue’, Liriope muscari ‘Aztec’, and Ophiopogon japonicus. Zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass, Liriope muscari ‘Big Blue’ were used in the second study based on the differential responses found in the study. Ozone induced severe visual damage to St. Augustinegrass with symptoms appearing as chlorotic streaks. St. Augustinegrass and Liriope muscari had a significant reduction in …
Dna Methylation Analysis And Identification Of A Novel Antisense Transcript In The Peg3 Imprinted Domain, Jennifer Marian Huang
Dna Methylation Analysis And Identification Of A Novel Antisense Transcript In The Peg3 Imprinted Domain, Jennifer Marian Huang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Genomic imprinting is a process that leads to the silencing of one allele of a gene in a parent of origin specific manner. Genes that are involved in this process are often regulated in clusters, one of which is the Peg3 (Paternally expressed gene 3) imprinted domain. We investigated this region for both CpG islands and long antisense transcripts, two common features of imprinted gene clusters. First, we performed a systematic survey of DNA methylation status of the CpG islands in this region of the mouse, cow, and human genomes. We identified two previously unreported differentially methylated regions (DMR): one …
Supercritical Fluid Extraction And Analysis Of Plant Oils, Tianchuan Du
Supercritical Fluid Extraction And Analysis Of Plant Oils, Tianchuan Du
LSU Master's Theses
Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of oxeye daisy (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum L.) seed, heartwood of Port-Orford cedar (POC) (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana), Alaska yellow cedar (AYC) (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis), and Eastern red cedar (ERC) (Juniperus virginiana L), and Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum L. Roxb. ) seed was investigated in this study and compared with other extraction methods. For the oxeye daisy seed extraction, Soxhlet extraction (SE) with hexane, microwave assisted extraction (MAE), and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) were conducted. The results showed that as the extraction temperature decreased from 100 °C, the extraction rate increased until 30 °C using SFE. With an increase of extraction …
The Effects Of Visual Representations On Teacher Training Of Phonological Awareness Principles, Rachel Kennedy Powell
The Effects Of Visual Representations On Teacher Training Of Phonological Awareness Principles, Rachel Kennedy Powell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Teachers are now being held to high accountability standards in reading instruction, yet studies show that teachers lack adequate knowledge in reading and phonological awareness principles (Moats, 1994, 2009; Spencer, Schuele, Guillot, & Lee, 2008). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of visual representations of letter/sound production (i.e., Phonic Faces, Norris, 2001) on improving teacher knowledge of phonological awareness principles, and to determine if there is a concomitant improvement in phonological awareness and reading acquisition for children in those classrooms. Seventeen kindergarten teachers from a Mississippi school were pretested on phonological awareness principles, then divided into …
People, Sheep, And Landscape Change In Colonial Mexico: The Sixteenth-Century Transformation Of The Valle Del Mezquital, Richard Hunter
People, Sheep, And Landscape Change In Colonial Mexico: The Sixteenth-Century Transformation Of The Valle Del Mezquital, Richard Hunter
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The causes of central Mexico’s environmental degradation are poorly understood. Scholarly contention centers on the role of introduced livestock as agents of soil erosion. This dissertation explores New Spain’s sixteenth-century livestock ecology by drawing upon archival and field data to reconstruct the spatio-temporal characteristics of sheep ranches in a southeastern section of central Mexico’s Valle del Mezquital. The introductory chapter outlines a scholarly disagreement from the 1990s that underscored differences between historical and geographical approaches to studying historical landscape transformations. On one side of this debate, geographer Karl W. Butzer finds in the sixteenth-century Mexican Bajío little evidence for environmental …
Miocene Herpetofaunas From The Central Gulf Coast Usa: Their Paleoecology, Biogeography, And Biostratigraphy, Michael John Williams
Miocene Herpetofaunas From The Central Gulf Coast Usa: Their Paleoecology, Biogeography, And Biostratigraphy, Michael John Williams
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The late Barstovian Fort Polk herpetofauna represents the most diverse herpetofauna on the Gulf Coast, USA, and includes 15 genera from ten families. The herpetofaunal composition of Fort Polk and Miocene east Texas localities is similar enough to Great Plains localities that they are all considered to be one biogeographical province during the Barstovian. The use of ternary diagrams, ratios of herpetological elements to kg matrix screened, and natricine-colubrine indices, has allowed determining the wetness of the Fort Polk sites. Development of a composite stratigraphic section for North American fossil snakes has allowed recognition of two extinctions of fossil snakes …
Creep Behavior Of Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Yanjun Xu
Creep Behavior Of Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Yanjun Xu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Creep behavior of natural fiber/polymer composites (NFPCs) was studied in response to the increasing application of this material as structural building products. Factors that influence creep behavior of the composites were investigated by analyzing creep curves of several different NFPC systems, which were designed for overall performance of the composites. Among different models, the 4-element Burgers type was mostly used for quantitative characterization of the creep curves to compare the properties of different composites. The parameters from the 4-element Burgers model were easily interpretable due to their physical meanings. Generalized Burgers models provided better fit by introducing extra Kelvin units, …
Tumor Necrosis Factor Induced Oxidative Stress In The Central Nervous System Contributes To Sympathoexcitation In Heart Failure, Anuradha Guggilam
Tumor Necrosis Factor Induced Oxidative Stress In The Central Nervous System Contributes To Sympathoexcitation In Heart Failure, Anuradha Guggilam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Despite advanced therapeutic strategies for post-myocardial infarction (MI) patients, many ultimately develop congestive heart failure (CHF), rendering the disease a major cause of death in the United States. MI is associated with an acute increase in sympathetic nervous system activity, becoming persistent in CHF patients. Increased pro-inflammatory cytokines (PICs) following MI are implicated in the pathogenesis of CHF. The increase in tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a primary PIC, correlates closely with heart disease severity. Moreover, central PIC production increases post-MI, and can affect the brain’s cardiovascular regulatory regions that control sympathoexcitation. Therefore, understanding how PICs modulate sympathoexcitation is important for …
The Anatomy Of Anatomia: Dissection And The Organization Of Knowledge In British Literature, 1500-1800, Matthew Scott Landers
The Anatomy Of Anatomia: Dissection And The Organization Of Knowledge In British Literature, 1500-1800, Matthew Scott Landers
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation develops a conceptual history of human anatomy, both as a discipline and as an epistemological model. Building on recent scholarship in the history of science, I argue that the basic organization of anatomical inquiry inspired a number of literary productions during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This project counters important critical trends of the last five decades, which have focused on the ambiguous characterization of an anatomical genre without providing sufficient medical context. I argue that intellectual history reveals a persistent epistemological analogy between the body and textual arrangements of human knowledge. By examining this analogical structure, it …
Characterizing The Epidemiology Of Isospora Amphiboluri In Captive Bearded Dragons (Pogona Vitticeps), Michael Robison Walden
Characterizing The Epidemiology Of Isospora Amphiboluri In Captive Bearded Dragons (Pogona Vitticeps), Michael Robison Walden
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
First described in 1967, Isospora amphiboluri has become recognized as an important pathogen of bearded dragons. To date, no cross-sectional, pathogenesis, or treatment study has been performed to shed light on the epidemiology or treatment of I.amphiboluri. Two large breeding populations of bearded dragons were examined for the presence of I. amphiboluri oocysts using sucrose flotation and fecal direct saline smears. Parasites were more likely to be identified on fecal flotation (p= 0.03). A previously unidentified Eimeria species was examined and described as a new species for which we suggest the name Eimeria pogonae. To develop an understanding of the …

Exploring The Reintegration Process For Child Soldiers: A Case Study Of Young Women And Their Children In Northern Uganda, Allison N. Martin
Exploring The Reintegration Process For Child Soldiers: A Case Study Of Young Women And Their Children In Northern Uganda, Allison N. Martin
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Child soldiering has occurred throughout history in the never-ending battle over land, resources and human rights. The earliest mention of minors in war comes from antiquity however it was not until the 1970s that the first international convention came into effect in an attempt to limit the participation of children in armed conflict (Wikipedia, 2009b). Unfortunately, children remain active in armed conflicts around the world as combatants, porters, spies, messengers, sex slaves and human shields. Human Rights Watch (2007) estimates that 200,000 to 300,000 children are currently serving in rebel and government forces in over 20 countries around the world. …
Simulation Studies On Estimation Of Variance Components For Multilevel Models, Sara Vakilian
Simulation Studies On Estimation Of Variance Components For Multilevel Models, Sara Vakilian
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
With the presence of unequal sampling in a multilevel model, the weight inflated estimators for variance components can be biased even though the use of survey weights results in design consistent estimators of the parameters. In this thesis I will carry out a simulation study to examine the performance of current existing methods and I will examine the resampling method for correcting bias of estimators of variance components of a multilevel model with covariates. This study will be based on these three papers: “Weighting for Unequal Selection Probabilities in Multilevel Models” by D. Pfeffermann , C. J. Skinner, D.J. Holmes, …

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit And Adaptive Co-Management: A Case Study Of Narwhal Co-Management In Arctic Bay, Nunavut, Aaron T. Dale
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Since 2001 the community of Arctic Bay, located on north-western Baffin Island, in Nunavut, Canada, has been experimenting with a new approach to narwhal management—‘community-based’ narwhal managemet. The new management system has developed some decision-making powers to the local Hunters’ and Trappers’ Organization, who are empowered/required to draft by-laws to govern the hunt. Community-based narwhal management links local, regional, territorial, and national actors and agencies in a co-management arrangement that draws its powers from, and is steered by, the Nunavut Final Agreement (1993), the comprehensive land claims agreement between the Inuit of Nunavut and Her Majesty the Queen in Right …

Dose Titration Of Sericea Lespedeza Leaf Meal On Haemonchus Contortus Infection In Crossbred Lambs, Dana Alicia Pollard
Dose Titration Of Sericea Lespedeza Leaf Meal On Haemonchus Contortus Infection In Crossbred Lambs, Dana Alicia Pollard
LSU Master's Theses
Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasitism is a problem for small ruminant producers. Haemonchus contortus is the most detrimental because of substantial economic losses. Over the past decades, chemical anthelmintics have been used to control GINs. Recently, GINs have developed resistance to most anthelmintics, and now reliance on anthelmintics is not possible. Alternative control methods are needed. Also, the use of fewer chemicals in agricultural products has called for alternative methods to be less synthetic and more organic. One promising alternative method is the feeding of condensed tannin (CT) containing forages as either fresh forage or dried products such as hay, ground …
