Sialic Acid Conjugated Chitosan For The Attenuation Of Amyloid-Beta Toxicity, Dhruva Dilip Dhavale Jan 2009

Sialic Acid Conjugated Chitosan For The Attenuation Of Amyloid-Beta Toxicity, Dhruva Dilip Dhavale

LSU Master's Theses

Amyloid-beta (Aβ), a 39 to 43 amino acid long peptide, is the primary species identified in senile plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and has been implicated in the neurotoxicity associated with AD. It is believed that Aβ toxicity is mediated through the interaction with neuronal membranes. A variety of evidence indicates that 1) Aβ may bind to the cell surface sialic acids, 2) the affinity of this interaction is higher if the gangliosides or sialic acids on the cell surface are clustered, 3) the removal of the surface sialic acids attenuate Aβ toxicity. Based on this data, we hypothesized …

Modeling Gag Grouper (Mycteroperca Microlepis) In The Gulf Of Mexico: Exploring The Impact Of Marine Reserves On The Population Dynamics Of A Protogynous Grouper, Robert D. Ellis Jan 2009

Modeling Gag Grouper (Mycteroperca Microlepis) In The Gulf Of Mexico: Exploring The Impact Of Marine Reserves On The Population Dynamics Of A Protogynous Grouper, Robert D. Ellis

LSU Master's Theses

The gag grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis) population in the Gulf of Mexico supports both a commercial and recreational fishery but has experienced a decrease in the male to female sex ratio over the past thirty years. Protogynous fish populations naturally have a smaller male to female ratio than gonochoristic fish populations; however the decline in the gag population is such that sperm limitation may be occurring. In an effort to correct the decline in sex ratio, fishery managers have recently implemented two marine reserves designed specifically to protect gag spawning aggregations. Results from two population models (an age-structured model and an …

Donor Intent: An Examination Of The Pertinent Literature Between Donors And Charities And The Legalities Of Complying With The Donor’S Restrictions On Gifts, Sherry Kluender

Graduate Research Papers

Foundations and non profit organizations have a moral, ethical and legal responsibility to honor the donor's original intent with their gift. Unfortunately, there are several instances in the past few years that have shown charities in the public eye where they have intentionally broke the agreements with their donors, thus causing donor mistrust and creating legal battles that affect all organizations. This paper outlines what donor intent entails, the legal boundaries which organizations need to abide and their legal rights to break donor intent. Lastly, this literature review will cover ethical behavior and how to combat this growing trend. Ultimately, …

The Effects Of Exercise-Induced Amenorrhea On The Fertility Of Female Athletes, Kara Johnson Jan 2009

The Effects Of Exercise-Induced Amenorrhea On The Fertility Of Female Athletes, Kara Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

It is well documented that a high number of female athletes experience detrimental health effects as a result of the "female athlete triad"-a set of conditions including osteoporosis, disordered eating, and amenorrhea. While the health effects of disordered eating and osteoporosis are heavily studied and well-known, even to the general population, the long-term consequences of amenorrhea are relatively unknown.

There is much evidence and documentation that women who engage in exercise and sport are likely to experience amenorrhea. Research has also shown that exerciseinduced amenorrhea can lead to a host of reproductive problems, including luteal phase defects, hormonal disruptions, and …

Are Soda Beverages A Contributing Factor To Weight Gain In Children?, Wendy Maria Clark Jan 2009

Are Soda Beverages A Contributing Factor To Weight Gain In Children?, Wendy Maria Clark

Graduate Research Papers

The controversy that diet soda may trigger a mechanism for weight gain has inspired this literature review. Our children need current facts on what is healthy and not healthy. Soda has been regarded as a discretionary beverage and not long ago, as a treat, after daily nutritional needs were met. However, soda is being consumed more frequently replacing other healthy nutritious beverages. Since diet soda is calorie-free, people unknowingly may imagine it has no impact on their bodies. In reality, research findings suggest that the effects of soda on the body are not benign. It is worth taking an in-depth …

Graduate Research Papers

Graphic practice provides children with an opportunity to develop, not only fine motor skills, but also self-regulatory and alphabet knowledge skills. Research has indicated that a child's fine motor development can predict his or her educational achievement, specifically in the areas of reading, math, and attention. The purpose of this project is to organize thirty weekly lessons that will familiarize teachers with the components necessary to introduce, integrate, and extend graphic practice strategies within their early childhood classrooms. These lessons will be compiled into a step-by-step guide for teachers. An outline for professional development is included.

A Portrayal Of The Modern Day Dairy Farm In Children's Literature, Bridget Donlon Jan 2009

A Portrayal Of The Modern Day Dairy Farm In Children's Literature, Bridget Donlon

Graduate Research Papers

Children's books may be the only views of farming urban students experience, yet books depicting farms with one or two cows are outdated. There is a lack of information available for children to learn about modem dairy farming practices. The dairy industry has experienced substantial changes in its history, including the introduction of many technologies. Modem dairy farms have incorporated technologies into everyday tasks, yet few children's books show farmers working at computers or even milking machines. At a time when most families are removed from farming, students create understanding of dairy farming through secondary sources such as children's literature. …

Moderating Effects Of Knowledge, Gender, And Education On The Relationship Between Environmental Value Orientation And Support For Louisiana Coastal Restoration, Meya Voorhies Holloway

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal Louisiana marshes are eroding at a rate equivalent to one football field every thirty minutes. It is vital to understand the perceptions of the American public regarding this issue. I conducted a self-administered mail survey during the spring of 2006. The survey was sent to 4,500 residents living in the Mississippi River Valley. The survey was used to identify respondents environmental value orientations, assess respondents attitudes with regards to support for restoration funding for Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, and to determine if outside moderating effects occurred to make respondents with specific value orientations (Anthropocentric or Biocentric) more likely to support …

Timecourse Analysis Of The Effect Of Atrazine On Human Hepg2 Cells, Erin M. Schrunk Jan 2009

Timecourse Analysis Of The Effect Of Atrazine On Human Hepg2 Cells, Erin M. Schrunk

Honors Program Theses

Atrazine is one of the most abundantly used herbicides in the United States. It works by inhibiting photosynthesis in broad leaf and grassy weeds. Consequently, with its frequent use, atrazine can contaminate many drinking water sources due to run-off from treated fields. While many studies have shown detrimental effects occur in various model organisms using very high levels of atrazine, not much is known about what effects occur due to lower levels of atrazine exposure. The current research project analyzed the effects of atrazine on human liver cells (HepG2). Specifically, we focused on the proteins that regulate cell cycle progression …

Tnf-Alpha Inhibition Of Adiponectin Expression By Targeting Ppar-Gamma And C/Ebp In Adipocytes, Yanning Wang Jan 2009

Tnf-Alpha Inhibition Of Adiponectin Expression By Targeting Ppar-Gamma And C/Ebp In Adipocytes, Yanning Wang

LSU Master's Theses

Chronic inflammation is involved in the adipose tissue dysfunction through regulation of endocrine and storage function of adipocytes. As a representative proinflammatory cytokine, TNF-α was reported to inhibit expression of adiponectin. However, the mechanism of inhibition remains to be identified. Here, we provide experimental evidence that TNF-α inhibits adiponectin at both transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels. In three animal models (aP2-P65, ob/ob and high fat diets-fed mice), an increase in TNF-α expression was associated with a decrease in adiponectin expression. In 3T3-L1 adipocytes, TNF-α inhibition of adiponectin was observed at mRNA and protein levels. Luciferase reporter assay and mRNA stability tests …

Translocation Success Of Adult Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Erin Herbez Jan 2009

Translocation Success Of Adult Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Erin Herbez

LSU Master's Theses

The red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis; hereafter RCW) is a cooperative breeder endemic to open old-growth pine savannah ecosystems in the southeastern United States (Jackson 1994). The RCW was listed as federally endangered in 1973, after a population decline due to habitat loss. Habitat fragmentation produces isolated populations of RCWs, which in turn ultimately limits the success of the species. RCW biologists and managers counteract effects of fragmentation by aggregating recruitment clusters and translocation. Although several studies examined subadult RCW translocation, detailed studies examining adult translocation have been limited. My study was conducted on a 3500 ha area owned by Plum …

Characterization Of Endoreplicated Nuclei In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Rasheed A. Ahmad Jan 2009

Characterization Of Endoreplicated Nuclei In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Rasheed A. Ahmad

LSU Master's Theses

A model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, duplicates its chromosomes without cell division, in a process known as endoreplication. The primary objective of this study was to identify genes and proteins that specifically accumulate in endoreplicated nuclei in Arabidopsis thaliana. Analysis of nuclei sorted by fluorescent activated cell sorter (FACS) revealed that ploidy levels and nuclear volume were positively correlated. However, the protein amounts among 2C, 4C, and 8C nuclei had no significant differences. This indicated a decrease of the protein concentration in endoreplicated nuclei. In contrast, the RNA amount in the 8C nuclei was 1.3- and 1.4-fold higher than that in …

The Effects Of Oral Administration Of An Aqueous Extract Of Ficus Bengalensis Stem Bark On Some Hematological And Biochemical Parameters In Rats With Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes, Mahalingam Gayathri, Krishnan Kannabiran

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effects of sub-chronic administration of an aqueous extract of Ficus bengalensis stem bark on hematological and biochemical parameters in rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were evaluated. The possible protective effect of the F. bengalensis (500 mg/kg of body weight per day) extract on STZ-induced changes was evaluated over 12 weeks. The parameters evaluated were plasma proteins, including total protein albumin and globulin, non-protein nitrogenous substances, including urea, uric acid, and creatinine, and hematological indices, including total hemoglobin content, erythrocytes, leucocytes, and platelets counts. The aqueous extract had a significant (P < 0.05) protective effect against STZ-induced changes in terms of the markers of protein metabolism and hematological indices. Furthermore, increases in levels of non-protein nitrogenous substances were normalized in response to the administration of the extract. Thus, the aqueous extract of F. bengalensis had a significant protective effect on STZ-induced changes to biochemical and hematological parameters in the diabetic rats.

Genotoxic Effects Of Herbicide Illoxan (Diclofop-Methyl) On Allium Cepa L., Deni̇z Yüzbaşioğlu, Fatma Ünal, Cengi̇z Sancak

Turkish Journal of Biology

The genotoxic potential of the commercial herbicide Illoxan (containing 284 g/L diclofop-methyl) was determined by using chromosome aberrations in Allium cepa root tip cells. The EC_{50} value was determined as 150.00 mg/L using a root growth inhibition test and then the roots were treated with 37.50, 75.00, and 150.00 mg/L concentrations for 12, 24, and 48 h. The results indicated that Illoxan significantly increased the abnormal cell frequency at all concentrations and treatment periods when compared with their controls, and this increase was dose-dependent for the 24 and 48 h treatments. On the other hand, Illoxan significantly decreased the mitotic …
