Examining The Influence Of Restaurant Green Practices On Customer Return Intention, Audrey L. Szuchnicki Jan 2009

Examining The Influence Of Restaurant Green Practices On Customer Return Intention, Audrey L. Szuchnicki

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In recent years there has been an increased awareness of how the actions of the foodservice industry are effecting the environment. With this awareness we have begun to see a change in priorities for both new and existing businesses. At the forefront of this change in the "green" direction is the GRA who certifies how eco-friendly an establishment is based on its' environmental guidelines. This study will examine the correlation between customer return intention and the institution of green practices within a restaurant setting. The expected outcome would be that a restaurant that is certified green or, implementing measures to …

Predisposition Factors Of Career And Technical Education Transfer Students: A Hermeneutic Phenomenology Study, Warren Glen Hioki Jan 2009

Predisposition Factors Of Career And Technical Education Transfer Students: A Hermeneutic Phenomenology Study, Warren Glen Hioki

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Various econometric, sociological, and combined research models (e.g., Hossler and Gallagher's preeminent Three-Phase Model on College Choice) provide help in understanding high school students in their decision-making stages and college experience. Many studies that utilize these models on college choice strongly substantiate and perpetuate the long-standing dichotomy between students who aspire to attend college in pursuit of upward mobility through the traditional baccalaureate pathway versus a community college Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway. High school students' aspirations to attend a 4-year institution, and more recently, the community college, are a focal point.

A review of the literature as it …

Genetic Variation For Carcass Quality Traits In Cultured Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax), Eric A. Saillant, Mathilde Dupont-Nivet, Marie Sabourault, Pierrick Haffray, Stanislas Laureau, Marie-Odile Vidal, Béatrice Chatain

Faculty Publications

Genetic parameters for carcass quality traits were estimated in 27 families of sea bass (3 dams x 9 sires factorial mating design), raised mixed in the same tanks starting before hatching. O. spring parentage was determined a posteriori using 6 microsatellite loci. Carcass quality traits were recorded at 818 days post fertilization (mean standard length: 32.6 +/- 3.1 cm). Genetic parameters were estimated from the sire half sib variance and covariance components. Heritability of body weight (BW) and carcass processing traits (standardized to body weight) percent head weight (Head%), percent viscera weight (Viscera%) and percent visceral fat weight (VisceFat%) were …

Variation Of Morphology And Elemental Concentrations In The California Nickel Hyperaccumulator Streptanthus Polygaloides (Brassicaceae), Robert S. Boyd, Michael A. Wall, Scott R. Santos, Michael A. Davis

Faculty Publications

The Ni hyperaccumulator Strepthanthus polygaloides (Brassicaceae) is one of a handful of Ni hyperaccumulators known from continental North America. Surveys have revealed four distinctive morphs of this species, relying primarily on floral traits (sepal color and shape): a purple sepal morph (P), a yellow sepal morph (Y), a morph in which sepals start yellow and mature to purple (Y/P), and a morph with light yellow undulate sepals (U). In this study, we raised plants from ten populations (five Y, three P, one Y/P, and one U) under uniform greenhouse conditions to determine if morphs varied in morphology and elemental concentrations …

The Effect Of Musical Characteristics, Exposure, And Individual Difference Variables On String Student Musical Preference: Implications For Introducing Western Art Music, Michael Reed Bollero

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This study explores the influences of various musical, environmental, and personal factors on string students' preferences for selections of Western Art Music. The purpose of this study was to provide insight into the information of music preferences by young string students in order to allow teachers to introduce Western Art music most effectively. Participants (n = 498) from northwest Arkansas public school string programs were given the String Student Music Preference Questionnaire (SSMPQ) developed by the author. Part One of the SS~MPQ measured preference for six one-minute selections of Western Art music by Beethoven, Berlioz, Mahle1; Saint-Siiens, and Schoenberg. In …

Introduction, Margaret P. Battin, Arthur G. Lipman Jan 2009

Introduction, Margaret P. Battin, Arthur G. Lipman

Utah Law Review

The landscape of drug theory, policy, and practice is highly "siloed" divided into differing spheres of discussion that appeal to differing underlying assumptions, that are regulated by different federal and other entities operating under quite different rationales, and that have quite different consequences for people who use drugs, from prescription medications to a social drink in the evening to illegal street drugs. This is the circumstance we find inconsistent, incoherent and disturbing-and to which this collection is addressed.

Medical Marijuana: The Conflict Between Scientific Evidence And Political Ideology, Peter J. Cohen Jan 2009

Medical Marijuana: The Conflict Between Scientific Evidence And Political Ideology, Peter J. Cohen

Utah Law Review

At the beginning of this article, a basic question was posited: Should the approval or disapproval of medical marijuana as a legitimate therapeutic agent be governed by the same statute (and philosophy) that applies to all other new drugs or pharmaceutical agents, the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and should the drug be evaluated by the appropriate regulatory agency, the Food and Drug Administration, for its safety and efficacy as demonstrated by "evidence consisting of adequate and well-controlled investigations, including clinical investigations, by experts qualified by scientific training and experience"? If not, should medical marijuana be exempt from scientific review …

Imagining The Addict: Evaluating Social And Legal Responses To Addiction, Elizabeth E. Joh Jan 2009

Imagining The Addict: Evaluating Social And Legal Responses To Addiction, Elizabeth E. Joh

Utah Law Review

Often we refer to the response to an unwanted addictive behavior, but of course there is no unified social or legal response. Instead, addictive or compulsive behaviors occasion a variety of social and legal responses: restrictive or prohibitive legislation, individual litigation, the emergence of advocacy groups, and the issue of expert opinion. Yet even if these responses do not originate from a single plan, they converge in a particular way. When a new "epidemic" of addictive behavior is identified, a narrative about that addiction emerges. Who are I the addicts? What danger do they pose? Who bears responsibility for the …

Pioneers, Probate, Polygamy, And You, Michael Cobb Jan 2009

Pioneers, Probate, Polygamy, And You, Michael Cobb

Utah Law Review

The point is this: as we start to spin out our own wonderful and grotesque ideas about love, marriage, death, and wills, religion, and Marx, we also need to start thinking of marriage and family commitments as wills in and of themselves, pondering the implications of making the family a supeniatural relation of terror, longing, loss, and arrest. The Last Will and Testament that we are always making when we are in families, when we "I do," is shot through with a deep connection between love and property that keeps us wishing that we could survive our deaths. The will …

Who's Afraid Of Polygamy? Exploring The Boundaries Of Family, Equality And Custom In South Africa, Penelope E. Andrews Jan 2009

Who's Afraid Of Polygamy? Exploring The Boundaries Of Family, Equality And Custom In South Africa, Penelope E. Andrews

Utah Law Review

By recognizing the reality of polyganious unions, the South African legislature gives effect to its constitutional promise of allowing everyone to practice the culture or religion 'of their choice. For a pluralist constitutional democracy, such latitude is crucial. But such recognition also suggests that the South African government is not prepared to make the hard choices that are necessary to ensure that the pursuit of gender equality is not derailed. Even though the Act is a celebration of cultural diversity, it also reflects a continued reticence about gender equality. As I've tried to argue in this paper, while polygamy may …

Full Circle, Ashley Morgan Jan 2009

Full Circle, Ashley Morgan

Utah Law Review

As a child, I spent most of my time daydreaming imagining other places and pretending to be someone else to avoid facing the reality of our home. My family looked ideal from the outside. I lived in a smalI house with my Mom, Dad, Grandma, two sisters, and a brother. Inside, it was a different story. My father physically abused my brother and sexually abused me. My mother knew, but chose not to defend us; and, I felt trapped in a life that offered no escape. For a very long time, I hated my mother. I despised her because she …

My Uncle George, Karen Williams Jan 2009

My Uncle George, Karen Williams

Utah Law Review

My words to Jean would have been different had I been free of the promise I gave to my mother years ago. I would have told Uncle George's daughter that there truly was no one else quite like her father in our whole family. I would have said that Uncle George, like St. Joseph, lived a life that defined a legitimate father by his love for a mother and her unborn child.

Good Faith, Fiduciary Duties, And The Business Judgment Rule In Delaware, Clark W. Furlow Jan 2009

Good Faith, Fiduciary Duties, And The Business Judgment Rule In Delaware, Clark W. Furlow

Utah Law Review

The Delaware courts frequently refer to a corporate director’s duty of good faith. However, they struggle to define it. One Delaware judge described this struggle as a “fog of hazy jurisprudence.” Delaware’s inability to offer a clear, consistent conception of good faith is significant because, under Delaware statutory law, a director is not entitled to protection from personal liability for a decision that was not taken in good faith.

Bark And Bite: The Environmental Sentencing Guidelines After Booker, Michael M. O'Hear Jan 2009

Bark And Bite: The Environmental Sentencing Guidelines After Booker, Michael M. O'Hear

Utah Law Review

The federal sentencing guidelines for environmental crimes bark loudly, calling for sentences of imprisonment for all but the most trivial of environmental offenses. Although the terms of imprisonment are not long, the prospect of even a short period of incarceration is doubtlessly capable of getting the attention of the white-collar professionals who commit environmental offenses. Research I conducted in 2004, however, indicated that the bark of the environmental guidelines was considerably worse than their bite. Judges “departed” below the applicable guidelines range in an unusually high percentage of environmental cases; barely one-third of convicted environmental defendants received prison sentences, and …

Locating The Environmental Harm In Environmental Crimes, Susan F. Mandiberg Jan 2009

Locating The Environmental Harm In Environmental Crimes, Susan F. Mandiberg

Utah Law Review

The current approach to environmental harm is odd from a criminal law perspective. The environmental criminal statutes barely deal with the subject at all. The environmental sentencing guidelines, on the other hand, focus almost entirely on harm. The resulting system does not adequately address the role of harm in evaluating the seriousness of environmental crimes or in graduating punishment for different levels of offenders. Although the situation could be resolved through amendments to the sentencing guidelines, a statutory approach has certain advantages from a societal perspective. There is no need to jettison the current statutory approach, which works well to …

Physiology And Ecology Of Three Amphipod Species In Uk Estuaries, Colette Suzanne Mesher Jan 2009

Physiology And Ecology Of Three Amphipod Species In Uk Estuaries, Colette Suzanne Mesher

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The physiology and ecology of three amphipod species, Corophium volutator, Gammarus marinus and G. chevreuxi were examined. The physiology of the amphipods were investigated in two ways. The physiological capacity was measured as the rate of oxygen consumption (MO2 - µ) of oxygen per mg of wet mass per hour), over two time durations, 4 hours (short term) and 5 days (medium term) in a variety of salinities with individuals of all size classes. Overall, larger individuals of all species exhibited lower MO2 by mass. More specifically, C. volutator and G. chevreuxi exhibited lowest rates of respiration at salinities between …

Distance Education : Is The Classroom Becoming Obsolete?, Randall M. Gilbert

Graduate Research Papers

The future of education seems to be moving rapidly towards distance education. Society is moving faster as people are trying to coordinate work, family, and school. Due to the increasing pressure of time and distance constraints, today's learners are sometimes choosing to get their educations online, or through a school with distance education technologies and capabilities. This literature review describes distance education, instructor and student attitudes towards distance education, benefits and disadvantages of distance education, the past and the future of distance education, and how and why it should be used in training and education.

Alimentación Preventiva De La Vaca En Transición, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Three-Dimensional Spatial Information Systems: State Of The Art Review, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, D. Laefer, S. W. Morrish, M. Bertolotto Jan 2009

Three-Dimensional Spatial Information Systems: State Of The Art Review, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, D. Laefer, S. W. Morrish, M. Bertolotto

Articles

A spatial information system (SIS) is critical to the hosting, querying, and analyzing of spatial data sets. The increasing availability of three-dimensional (3D) data (e.g. from aerial and terrestrial laser scanning) and the desire to use such data in large geo-spatial platforms have been dual drivers in the evolution of integrated SISs. Within this context, recent patents demonstrate efforts to handle large data sets, especially complex point clouds. While the development of feature-rich geo-systems has been well documented, the implementation of support for 3D capabilities is only now being addressed. This paper documents the underlying technologies implemented for the support …
