Path Of The Dragon’S Eye: Using Fantasy Elements In Realism, Winston Edward Jones Jr. Jan 2008

Path Of The Dragon’S Eye: Using Fantasy Elements In Realism, Winston Edward Jones Jr.

Honors Theses

WINSTON EDWARD JONES: A Collection ofInterwoven Fantasy Short Stories (Under the direction ofRonald Schroeder)

The stories presented in this thesis illustrate a common theme through the use of both fantasy and realism. Specifically, these dichotomous styles are used to comment on the nature of human desire. To represent desire, each story features an appearance and interaction with the titular item, the dragon’s eye. This item often serves as both representation and foil to the characters’ deepest desires. By interjecting this fantastic jewel into realistic situations, these stories attempt to utilize fantasy as a vehicle through which emotional tension is created …

Object Usage Processing Improves Memory, Joseph C. Tann Jan 2008

Object Usage Processing Improves Memory, Joseph C. Tann

Honors Theses

JOSEPH C. TANN: Usage as a Beneficial Method of Encoding

Many psychologists have attempted to find the most effective method of processing information in human memory. For years, the pleasantness method of processing was considered to be among the best methods for enhancing memory performance. One recent theory (Nairne, 2007) has suggested that processing items in terms oftheir survival value may be an even more proficient method of processing. Another theory (Reysen & Adair, 2008) attempted to prove that survival may not be the reason for the enhanced performance, but the individual’s connection with the specific object’s usage. My experiment …

The Nudix Hydrolase 7 Is An Acyl-Coa Diphosphatase Involved In Regulating Peroxisomal Coenzyme A Homeostasis., Sarah-Jayne Reilly, Veronica Tillander, Rob Ofman, Stefan Alexson, Mary Hunt Jan 2008

The Nudix Hydrolase 7 Is An Acyl-Coa Diphosphatase Involved In Regulating Peroxisomal Coenzyme A Homeostasis., Sarah-Jayne Reilly, Veronica Tillander, Rob Ofman, Stefan Alexson, Mary Hunt

Articles

Coenzyme A (CoASH) is an obligate cofactor for lipids undergoing β-oxidation in peroxisomes. Although the peroxisomal membrane appears to be impermeable to CoASH, peroxisomes contain their own pool of CoASH. It is believed that CoASH enters peroxisomes as acyl-CoAs, but it is not known how this pool is regulated. The mouse nudix hydrolase 7 (NUDT7α) was previously identified in peroxisomes as a CoAdiphosphatase, and therefore suggested to be involved in regulation of peroxisomal CoASH levels. Here we show that mouse NUDT7α mainly acts as an acyl-CoA diphosphatase, with highest activity towards medium chain acyl-CoAs, and much lower activity with CoASH. …

A Study Of Boundary Layer Fflow With No-Slip And Slip Boundary Conditions, Sandra B. Spillane Jan 2008

A Study Of Boundary Layer Fflow With No-Slip And Slip Boundary Conditions, Sandra B. Spillane

Doctoral

This thesis involves solving the two-dimensional boundary layer equations for axially symmetric fluid flow along a circular cylinder using the no-slip and slip boundary condition, and along a flat plate with the slip boundary condition. Initially, historical results in both areas are summarised. The research section of this thesis is concerned with extending these historical results. In the first research chapters, a Pade approximation and an Euler transformation are used to greatly extend the region of validity of the historical results. Following that is an investigation of the relaxation of the traditional no-slip boundary condition, which usually occurs when there …

Combination Of Natural Variability Estimation With Real Time Measurement For Mushroom Shelf Life Assessment., Leixuri Aguirre Jan 2008

Combination Of Natural Variability Estimation With Real Time Measurement For Mushroom Shelf Life Assessment., Leixuri Aguirre

Doctoral

The shelf life of mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) is affected by the natural variability of the produce which influences the perishable vegetable quality. One of the main causes of this variability is non-homogeneity in the product maturity at harvest, resulting in each vegetable batch being at a different stage of senescence. The present work aims to study a new approach to improve the assessment of the shelf life of mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) taking into account this variability. The study of variability involved the: i) study of the shelf life, quality parameters and variability of the mushrooms and modelling these experimental laboratory …

A Macro-Bend Fiber Based Wavelength Demodulation System For Optical Fiber Sensing Applications, Ginu Rajan Jan 2008

A Macro-Bend Fiber Based Wavelength Demodulation System For Optical Fiber Sensing Applications, Ginu Rajan

Doctoral

This thesis considers the design and development of a wide range all fiber interrogation system with a rapid measurement capability for extracting reliable measure and information from fiber Bragg grating sensors. Existing passive and active interrogation systems have certain limitations and do not satisfy all requirements. In this thesis a wavelength demodulation system is proposed, based on a macro-bend fiber filter employed in a ratiometric detection scheme. A theoretical model and analysis of an edge filter based ratiometric wavelength measurement (RWM) system is presented. A fiber edge filter is realized by carefully selecting an appropriate bend radius and number of …

The Effects Of Posture On Quantitative Eeg And End Tidal Co2 Duringstandardised Optimal Hyperventiation In Healthy Adults And In Patients With Childhood Absence Epilepsy And Attack Disorders, Ann Coughlan Jan 2008

The Effects Of Posture On Quantitative Eeg And End Tidal Co2 Duringstandardised Optimal Hyperventiation In Healthy Adults And In Patients With Childhood Absence Epilepsy And Attack Disorders, Ann Coughlan

Doctoral

Hyperventilation is used as an activation procedure during EEG. It induces hypocapnia, which elicits changes in brain wave activity that may be diagnostically useful. The mechanism of action by which Hyperventilation (HV) produces slow theta/delta waves on EEG remains conjectural. Four criteria determine the magnitude of HV response: vigorous exchange of air, blood glucose levels, age of subject, and posture. Effects of posture are poor studied quantitatively. Objective: A Standardised Optimal Hyperventilation Protocol (SOHVP), which elicited Hyperventilation Induced High Amplitude Rhythmic Slow activity (HIHARS) during EEG controlling for posture seated (stOHV) and supine (spOHV) is presented and validated. Method: Respiratory …

Evaluation Of Regulation Of Late Gene Expression In Human Papillomavirus-Infected Cervical Epithelia, Joanna Fay Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Regulation Of Late Gene Expression In Human Papillomavirus-Infected Cervical Epithelia, Joanna Fay

Doctoral

Cervical cancer is second only to breast cancer as the most common cancer among women worldwide and is caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of RNA-binding proteins in the expression of HPV in cervical cells and clinical samples. Firstly, an audit was performed on cervical biopsy samples taken by laser loop excision over 5 years in the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin, Ireland. The presence of HPV and HPV-16 was evaluated on fifty of these samples and the distribution of multiple RNA-binding proteins, including SR proteins and hnRNPs, was evaluated …

Poverty, Diet And Health Behaviours: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study Among Young Urbanised Women., Daniel Mccartney Jan 2008

Poverty, Diet And Health Behaviours: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study Among Young Urbanised Women., Daniel Mccartney

Doctoral

Demographic, socio-economic, attitudinal, dietary, health behavioural and anthropometric data were collected from 221 “disadvantaged” and 74 “advantaged” women aged 18-35 years across Dublin, according to the provisions of a novel socio-economic sampling frame. Internal and external validation techniques established the dietary assessment method of choice and identified “valid” dietary reporters (n=216, 153 disadvantaged, 63 advantaged) among this sample. Five qualitative focus groups (n=5-8 per group) were also conducted among disadvantaged women to examine their diet and health behaviour choices. Lower intakes of fruit and vegetables (172g/d vs. 405g/d, p

Digital Close Range Photogrammetry In Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction, Fiona Coyle Jan 2008

Digital Close Range Photogrammetry In Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction, Fiona Coyle

Doctoral

Road traffic accidents are consistently in the top ten causes of death world-wide. In order to reduce the number of fatalities caused by traffic collision, better knowledge and understanding of the sequence of events prior to and during a traffic accident, i.e. Accident Reconstruction, is required, so it is important to obtain detailed quantitative information about the damage sustained by the crashed vehicle(s). The research reported here was aimed at developing a fast and accurate method of measuring the damage. Digital Close Range Photogrammetry is the technique chosen for obtaining vehicle profiles from which accurate measurements of crust damage could …

The Mechanism Of Silver Dissolution For Biomedical Devices And Hygienic Coating Applications., Yanmei Ma Jan 2008

The Mechanism Of Silver Dissolution For Biomedical Devices And Hygienic Coating Applications., Yanmei Ma

Doctoral

This work focuses on the mechanism of silver dissolution for biomedical and hygienic coating applications. The research work began from the investigation of silver dissolution behaviour from pure silver and silver-platinum alloys in solutions with or without chloride using the technique of cyclic volammetry (CV). A zero resistance amperometry (ZRA) measurement was carried out to study the effect of platinum on the silver dissolution behaviour in 0.89%wt. NaCI solution. The mechanism of silver dissolution from pure silver and silver-platinum alloys in 0.89%wt. NaCI solution was proposed by an equivalent circuit model under the investigation of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It …

Novel Photoelectrochemical Cell For The Remediation Of Organic Compounds In Water, Patrick Enright Jan 2008

Novel Photoelectrochemical Cell For The Remediation Of Organic Compounds In Water, Patrick Enright

Doctoral

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions have widely been used as photocatalysts, either alone or in a doped form to degrade organic compounds and kill bacteria. Because of its relatively large band gap, UV light has been the most efficient radiation used to allow this catalysis to occur. TiO2 has also been immobilised on electrodes in order to separate the ‘reduction’ and ‘oxidation’ reactions. Typical systems involve the oxidation of a ‘fuel’ at a TiO2 coated anode and the reduction of oxygen at a separate cathode, where the passage of current can be monitored, and this work utilises such a system. In …

Investigation Of The Electronic Properties Of Organic Systems Using Electroabsorption Spectroscopy, Garrett F. Farrell Jan 2008

Investigation Of The Electronic Properties Of Organic Systems Using Electroabsorption Spectroscopy, Garrett F. Farrell

Doctoral

The aim of this project is to investigate the effect of bulk structural modification on the electronic properties of fullerene systems as measured using electronic and Electroabsorption (EA) spectroscopy. The existence of a unique solid state feature in C60 is the first indication that the material’s electronic properties may be influenced by its crystalline environment and as such merits investigation. The nature and extent of these interactions in the solid state is still unclear, in particular whether the molecular electrons remain located on the individual molecules or whether they are delocalised across the solid. The extent of these interactions has …

Editorial: Nutrition Research Reviews, Katherine Younger

Articles

We are all familiar with the dietary guideline exhorting us to eat so many portions of oily fish per week in order to boost our intakes of n-3 long-chain PUFA, but it is perhaps not so widely realised that the fish must themselves be provided with dietary n-3 long-chain PUFA or, possibly, their precursors (though, as in humans, the ability of carnivorous fish to elongate and desaturate n-3 PUFA appears to be limited).
