Epistemological Belief, Attachment Style To God, And Religious Commitment As Predictors Of Religious Maturity, Andrew Beard Jan 2008

Epistemological Belief, Attachment Style To God, And Religious Commitment As Predictors Of Religious Maturity, Andrew Beard

Masters Theses

The present study explored how three variables ( epistemological belief, attachment style to God, and religious commitment) predicted religious maturity. The study specifically aimed at determining which variable ( epistemological belief, attachment style to God, and religious commitment) was most predictive of each of the various dimensions of religious maturity: master-motive, complexity of beliefs, openness, heuristic quality as well as the integration of religious attitude components. Scales that measured these predictors and dimensions of religious maturity were administered to 246 students at Eastern Illinois University. Results indicated that the affective (attachment style to God) and behavioral (religious commitment) variables were …

Differences Among Students With Or Without Severe Discrepancy Between Predicted And Actual Achievement: Does Severe Discrepancy Matter?, Melissa (Bergan) Mcclelland

Masters Theses

This study investigated the differences between students with severe discrepancy and those without according to the Reynolds ( 1984) regression-based discrepancy formula. The sample included 264 students who were referred for an initial special education evaluation of !earning problems. Differences between these two groups were examined across gender, age, cognitive variables, and achievement. Results revealed that no significant gender or age differences were found in the presence of a severe discrepancy. However, statistically significant negative correlations were found between Full Scale IQ, and all of the differences between predicted and actual achievement scores with small to medium effect sizes (-1 …

The Panhellenic Project: Assessing Learning Engagement Using Web 2.0 Technologies, Cheryl A. Carter

Theses and Dissertations

High attrition rates have been a consistent occurrence among online learners, creating the challenge of how to design online instruction for the type of learning that encourages student engagement. With new technologies constantly evolving, the question becomes how educators can use these new web-based applications to engage students and possibly resolve the problem of high attrition among online learners? The purpose of this study was to assess the level of learning engagement through student participation in The Panhellenic Project, an instructional design model that integrated constructivist learning principles with Web 2.0 technologies. Additionally, the usefulness of structured orientations to the …

Teacher Perceptions Related To Technology Tools For Curriculum Alignment: A Survey Of Teachers' Response To A Curriculum Mapping Tool, Julie A. Mathiesen Jan 2008

Teacher Perceptions Related To Technology Tools For Curriculum Alignment: A Survey Of Teachers' Response To A Curriculum Mapping Tool, Julie A. Mathiesen

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this descriptive study was to build understanding about the tools, methods and theory behind teacher use of a technology-based tool and process to align K-12 curriculum with state standards. A shift to a standards-driven education policy has created conditions in which teachers are encouraged to align classroom instruction to designated content standards but currently educators lack methods, guidance and appropriate strategies to accomplish this task. Curriculum mapping software is one tool that has been developed to aid in this endeavor. Data from an existing survey instrument was utilized to analyze subsets of teacher perception data and to …

The results of this case study will …

Teaching Children In Head Start Phonological Awareness Skills Of Alliteration And Rhyming, Matthew J. Sidarous Jan 2008

Teaching Children In Head Start Phonological Awareness Skills Of Alliteration And Rhyming, Matthew J. Sidarous

Masters Theses

Phonological awareness has received considerable recognition in the past few decades as a strong predictor of reading. Phonological awareness is the understanding that oral language can be divided into smaller components and manipulated. A wealth of studies has supported the predictive power of phonological awareness on reading achievement. However, research has been conflicted as to the best method to improve phonological awareness. The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether or not two different phonological awareness techniques utilizing rhyme and alliteration were useful in the acquisition of phonological awareness in at - risk children attending a Head Start …

Nine More- Or Less-Related Observations On Historical Approaches To Hindu-Christian Studies, Brian K. Pennington Jan 2008

Nine More- Or Less-Related Observations On Historical Approaches To Hindu-Christian Studies, Brian K. Pennington

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

For the purposes of this panel discussion, it seems more appropriate to make a series of suggestions and observations about the difficulties and promises of writing history within a Hindu-Christian framework than to offer a paper arguing a single point or perspective. Hindu-Christian history presents a particular set of challenges given the shifting political and material conditions that have attended the dramatic encounter between these disparate cultures and traditions. In what follows I attempt to articulate some of the larger issues with which I wrestle as I study and write Hindu-Christian history.

The Role Of Ethics In Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Arvind Sharma Jan 2008

The Role Of Ethics In Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Arvind Sharma

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I would like to offer some remarks on the role of ethics in Hindu-Christian dialogue. I shall argue that the presentations of their respective ethical positions by these traditions are often too flat, which is to say, not sufficiently nuanced so that each side enters into dialogue with an inadequate understanding of the other side. I shall then further argue that the dialogue may be more fruitful, if it proceeded with a mutual recognition of the ethical complexities involved in their respective positions.

Methodological Approaches To Hindu-Christian Studies: Some Thoughts, T.S. Rukmani Jan 2008

Methodological Approaches To Hindu-Christian Studies: Some Thoughts, T.S. Rukmani

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I was surprised that any one would want me to be a respondent for a panel which was primarily concerned with methodological approaches to Hindu-Christian Studies, my interest being mainly philosophical Sanskrit texts. However as a Hindu and having lived in India for most of my adult life I was interested to learn more about the way academics deal with this issue, which really is one that is fraught with many complications. Harold Coward, who gave a retrospect of the Society at the beginning of the session, did indeed give me a glimpse of the topics and methodology followed in …

Being Catholic The Tamil Way: Assimilation And Differentiation, Selva J. Raj Jan 2008

Being Catholic The Tamil Way: Assimilation And Differentiation, Selva J. Raj

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The ritual life of Tamil Catholics in south India defies tidy, conventional categories like assimilation, differentiation, and othering, since the complex negotiations characteristic of this lived tradition often involve both assimilation and differentiation. This dynamic reflects/reveals their hybrid and liminal cultural and religious condition where boundaries are not fixed or absolute, but constantly fluid, permeable, and negotiable. While this pattern is manifest almost in all spheres of Tamil Catholic life and practice, in this paper I focus on how lay Catholics configure and maintain their "tamilness" in the realms of devotional music, caste discourse, and public devotional rituals with relevant …

Can Christians Be Bhaktas? A Sanskritic View From Central India, C. 1850, Richard Fox Young Jan 2008

Can Christians Be Bhaktas? A Sanskritic View From Central India, C. 1850, Richard Fox Young

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

My essay focuses on an undeservedly obscure individual, Somanath Vyas, whose name hardly registers among South Asia scholars. Recently, however, Somanath's writings have elicited interest among Sanskritists in Central India where he lived. Of these, I focus on the Kalandikaprakasa, composed between 1847 and 1850. A major treatise in wissenschaftliches and Sanskrit, it discusses knowledge, scientific and religious, that the author, a traditionally-educated Hindu pandit, deemed worthy of knowing. Importantly, this knowledge included a knowledge of Christianity. For an era rife with interreligious polemics, to advocate on behalf of Christianity as a religion worth knowing in relation to its …

Shifts And Continuities: The Ideological Evolution Of José Rodríguez Feo, Robert Lesman Jan 2008

Shifts And Continuities: The Ideological Evolution Of José Rodríguez Feo, Robert Lesman

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Cuban editor, translator and literary critic José Rodríguez Feo (1920-93) has received insufficient attention from scholars of Cuban cultural history. Though he was wealthy, fluent in English, and educated at Harvard, he decided to stay in Cuba and commit to Castro's revolutionary cultural agenda. Though this fact is surprising, the seeds of Rodríguez Feo's Marxist commitments can be seen in the early stages of his career, when he was co-editor of the literary magazine Orígenes (1944-56). Rodríguez Feo's knowledge of U.S. history instilled in him a distaste for the injustices of imperialism. His education and fluency in English did not …

Education And The Age Profile Of Literacy Into Adulthood, Elizabeth Cascio, Damon Clark, Nora Gordon Jan 2008

Education And The Age Profile Of Literacy Into Adulthood, Elizabeth Cascio, Damon Clark, Nora Gordon

Dartmouth Scholarship

American teenagers perform considerably worse on international assessments of achievement than do teenagers in other high-income countries. This observation has been a source of great concern since the first international tests were administered in the 1960s. But does this skill gap persist into adulthood? We examine this question using the first international assessment of adult literacy, conducted in the 1990s. We find that, consistent with other assessments of the school-age population, U.S. teenagers perform relatively poorly, ranking behind teenagers in the twelve other rich countries surveyed. However, by their late twenties, Americans compare much more favorably to their counterparts abroad: …

Will The Stork Return To Europe And Japan? Understanding Fertility Within Developed Nations, James Feyrer, Bruce Sacerdote, Ariel Dora Stern Jan 2008

Will The Stork Return To Europe And Japan? Understanding Fertility Within Developed Nations, James Feyrer, Bruce Sacerdote, Ariel Dora Stern

Dartmouth Scholarship

We seek to explain the differences in fertility rates across high-income countries by focusing on the interaction between the increasing status of women in the workforce and their status in the household, particularly with regards to child care and home production. We observe three distinct phases in women's status generated by the gradual increase in women's workforce opportunities. In the earliest phase, characteristic of the 1950s and 1960s in the United States, women earn low wages relative to men and are expected to shoulder all of the child care at home. As a result, most women specialize in home production …
