Selling Civil Defense: The Politics And Commerce Of Preparedness, 1950--1963, Angela Christine Moor
Selling Civil Defense: The Politics And Commerce Of Preparedness, 1950--1963, Angela Christine Moor
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis, by examining how business, government, and civic leaders promoted civil defense, shows how a policy of self-help merged the roles of citizen and consumer and how family-centered preparedness equated the survival of the nuclear family with the victory of the US in the Cold War. Civil defense officials helped reinforce messages about gender roles by stressing the value of nuclear families and the crucial role each family member played in the defense of America. Public information campaigns emphasized the importance of free enterprise and privatization by endorsing a policy of self-help for American families whereby individual families were …
Boulevards In The Forest: Progressive Urban Planning, Environment And Labor In Longview, Washington, Abraham Ott
Boulevards In The Forest: Progressive Urban Planning, Environment And Labor In Longview, Washington, Abraham Ott
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study focuses on the development of Longview, a city in southwest Washington, founded by Long-Bell Timber Company in 1923. It will discuss the reasons behind Longview's development, the ways that Long-Bell's diverse interests and experiences impacted the city's planning and construction, and the influence that Robert A. Long, Long-Bell's founder and chief stockholder, had in the city's realization. In doing so, this study proves that Long-Bell pursued the same paternalistically driven elements of social control that have been traditionally attributed to company towns throughout the Pacific Northwest. The manifestation of those elements, however, was informed by a variety of …

Working Memory Deficits In Psychotic Bipolar Disorder: Trait Marker For Psychosis, Carol Randall
Working Memory Deficits In Psychotic Bipolar Disorder: Trait Marker For Psychosis, Carol Randall
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
There is significant overlap in the symptom presentation and cognitive impairment found in individuals with bipolar disorder with psychotic features and in those with some subtypes of schizophrenia. Due to this overlap, debate regarding the existence and nature of a relationship between these disorders has been an ongoing and complicated one. Some continue to view these disorders as they are conceptualized in the current psychiatric diagnostic manual, as distinct and categorical in nature. Others have proposed an "affective-psychotic spectrum" with schizophrenia lying at one end of this spectrum, non-psychotic affective disorders lying at the opposite end of the spectrum, and …

Detection Algorithms For The Nano Nose, J. M. Karthikeya Udayagiri V. R.
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Nano nose is an instrument with an array of nano sized optical sensors that produces digital patterns when exposed to radiation passing through a gaseous mixture. The digital patterns correspond to the amount of photocurrent registered on each of the sensors. The problem is to find the gas constituents in the gaseous mixture and estimate their concentrations. This thesis outlines an algorithm using a combination of a mixed gas detector and a gas concentration predictor. The mixed gas detector is an array of neural networks corresponding to the number of gases. There are two techniques outlined for the implementation …
Self-Stabilizing K-Clustering In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Priyanka Vemula
Self-Stabilizing K-Clustering In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Priyanka Vemula
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, two silent self-stabilizing asynchronous distributed algorithms are given for constructing a k-clustering of a connected network of processes. These are the first self-stabilizing solutions to this problem. One algorithm, FLOOD, takes O( k) time and uses O(k log n) space per process, while the second algorithm, BFS-MIS-CLSTR, takes O(n) time and uses O(log n) space; where n is the size of the network. Processes have unique IDs, and there is no designated leader. BFS-MIS-CLSTR solves three problems; it elects a leader and constructs a BFS tree for the network, constructs a minimal independent set, and finally a …
Optimization Of Bipolar Plate Design For Flow And Temperature Distributions Using Numerical Techniques, Kiran Mohan Veepuri
Optimization Of Bipolar Plate Design For Flow And Temperature Distributions Using Numerical Techniques, Kiran Mohan Veepuri
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Although water is fed controllably into the flow channels in the bipolar plates surrounding the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), the complex flow geometry can lead to non-uniformity of the flow and temperature distribution inside the channels. In addition, non-uniform temperature distribution in the cell will affect the electrochemical process for hydrogen production or fuel cell applications. There are many studies on the theoretical analysis of fuel cells, but not many have been reported on the characteristics of the PEM electrolyzer; In this thesis work, numerical simulations were carried out on the basic bipolar plate given by the Proton Energy Systems …

Investigating Shear Capacity Of Rc Beam-Column Joints Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques, Eslam Mohamed Alnaji Hassan Khalifa
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Beam-column joints are critical zones in reinforced concrete structures. The behavior of joints is very complex and governed by different mechanisms such as flexure, shear, and bond stress between the reinforcement and the concrete. Shear transfer mechanisms through the joint are one of the most important factors affecting the joint performance. Shear failure occurring in the joint can lead to severe damage and may result in the collapse of the structure. This thesis presents an investigation into the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beam-column joints. The performance is influenced by several key parameters. An analysis is carried out to simulate …

Implementation Of Recursive Queries For Information Systems, Jayalakshmi Jeyaraman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Sophisticated information systems require a powerful query language and an efficient implementation strategy. In practice, these information systems are either built on the top of an existing database management system or built as an expert system with deductive capabilities. Both of these implementations must provide a mechanism to express recursive queries. It is therefore a necessity for the system to have an efficient algorithm to evaluate these queries. In this thesis, we give a detailed description of a bibliographic database, a set of recursive queries, an overview of some standard query processing algorithms, and an implementation of these queries in …
Implementation Of Bma Based Motion Estimation Hardware Accelerator In Hdl, Nachiket Jugade
Implementation Of Bma Based Motion Estimation Hardware Accelerator In Hdl, Nachiket Jugade
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Motion Estimation in MPEG (Motion Pictures Experts Group) video is a temporal prediction technique. The basic principle of motion estimation is that in most cases, consecutive video frames will be similar except for changes induced by objects moving within the frames. Motion Estimation performs a comprehensive 2-dimensional spatial search for each luminance macroblock (16x16 pixel block). MPEG does not define how this search should be performed. This is a detail that the system designer can choose to implement in one of many possible ways. It is well known that a full, exhaustive search over a wide 2-dimensional area yields the …

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Impact Of The Length Of Left-Turn Lane On Signalized Intersection Delays, Nitin Kalsi
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The most common guidelines for determining the lengths of left-turn lanes are based on probability of accommodating a left-turn traffic at least traffic 95 percent of the time. These guidelines do not directly take into account the delays caused by through traffic for potentially blocking left-turn lanes. In this research the impact of the lengths of left-turn lanes on intersection delays are considered to optimize the lengths of the left-turn lanes. Data for traffic counts, queue lengths and signal timing are collected from an intersection in Las Vegas. The methodology involves development of simulation model using Corridor Simulation (CORSIM) and …

Impact Of Variable Transmission Range In All-Wireless Networks, Prathima Sajja
Impact Of Variable Transmission Range In All-Wireless Networks, Prathima Sajja
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, we propose three distributed algorithms for self-adjusting the transmission range of nodes in wireless network. The objective is to vary the transmission radii of selective sensor nodes to lower the energy spent in broadcasting or the diameter. The sensor nodes start arbitrarily with different transmission ranges. The nodes positions are fixed, and can adjust the transmission power. However, increasing the transmission power to reach more nodes may consume more energy. So, the goal is to reduce the transmission power (i.e., save energy) without reducing the reachability (in terms of the number of nodes); We propose two algorithms …

Turning Function And Shape Recognition, Swetha Shankar
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The technique of turning function is a powerful method for measuring similarity between two dimensional shapes. The method works well when the boundary of the shape does not contain noise edges. We propose an algorithm for smoothing noise edges by decomposing the boundary into monotone components and smoothing the noise edges in each component. We also present an implementation of the proposed smoothing algorithm.
