Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

New particle formation is of interest because of its influence on the properties of aerosol population, and due to the possible contribution of newly formed particles to cloud condensation nuclei. Currently no conclusive evidence exists as to the mechanism or mechanisms of nucleation and subsequent particle growth. However, nucleation rates exhibit a clear dependence on ambient sulphuric acid concentrations and particle growth is often attributed to the condensation of organic vapours. A detailed study of new particle formation in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains is presented here. Gas and particle measurement data for 32 days was analyzed …

Optimal Bus Stop Spacing For Minimizing Transit Operation Cost, Huan Li, Robert L. Bertini

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

With the increasing attention to finance issues relative to transit operation, a bus stop spacing model is generated with the aim at minimizing the operation cost without impact on transit accessibility. Two cost functions are considered in the model including passenger access cost and in-vehicle passenger stopping cost aiming at minimizing total cost. A bus route in Portland, Oregon, USA is examined as an example using Archived Bus Dispatch System (BDS) data provided by TriMet, the regional transit provider for the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. Based on the optimization model, the theoretical optimized bus stop spacing is 930 feet comparing …

Influence De La Charge De Travail Sur Les Indicateurs Biologiques D'Exposition De Cinq Solvants, Robert Tardif, Ginette Charest-Tardif, Ginette Truchon, Martin Brochu

Exculpatory Evidence, Ethics, And The Road To The Disbarment Of Mike Nifong: The Critical Importance Of Full Open-File Discovery, Robert P. Mosteller Jan 2008

Exculpatory Evidence, Ethics, And The Road To The Disbarment Of Mike Nifong: The Critical Importance Of Full Open-File Discovery, Robert P. Mosteller

Faculty Scholarship

Mike Nifong, the prosecutor in the Duke lacrosse rape case, was disbarred by the North Carolina State Bar in June 2007 principally for withholding exculpatory DNA evidence and for making false statements about his conduct. This article relates the central details of his actions and the process that led to disbarment. Its key overall insight is that full open-file discovery was the figurative workhorse and hero in the Nifong disbarment saga. That saga was itself strongly affected by two earlier death penalty cases where prosecutors also failed to provide exculpatory information to the defense. The constitutional doctrine in Brady v. …

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

The effects of choosing between two academic assignments on task completion and percent correct by a ninth grade student with a learning disability was investigated. This case study extended the efficacy of antecedent based intervention as an instructional modification. Further, the study extends previous research by investigating the effect of choice on academic achievement. The withdrawal design showed that percent completed and correct were highest when the participant was given a choice between two assignments when compared to baseline conditions. Results are discussed in term of efficacy of choice as an antecedent intervention, choice selection, and future research directions.

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Sportsmanship problems in youth sport have recently become a more prominent issue for parks and recreation professionals. Benefits-based programming is one method these professionals could use to address the issues of sportsmanship in their youth leagues. Recent studies and programs have successfully employed prosocial behavior techniques in this process as a means of improving the sportsmanship atmosphere in youth leagues. Previous research, however, has yet to compare the efficacy of such programs in comparison to a control group. Data for this study were gathered through observations of positive and negative sportsmanship behaviors youth basketball games at two local community centers. …

Mapping Selective Logging In Mixed Deciduous Forest: A Comparison Of Machine Learning Algorithms, Christopher D. Lippitt, John Rogan, Zhe Li, J. Ronald Eastman, Trevor G. Jones

Geography

This study assesses the performance of five Machine Learning Algorithms (MLAS) in a chronically modified mixed deciduous forest in Massachusetts (USA) in terms of their ability to detect selective timber logging and to cope with deficient reference datasets. Multitemporal Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper-plus (ETM+) imagery is used to assess the performance of three Anificial Neural Networks - Multi-Layer Perceptron, ARTMAP, Self-Organizing Map, and two Classification Tree splitting algorithms: gini and entropy rules, MLA performance evaluations are based on susceptibility to reduced training set size, noise, and variations in the training set, as well as the operability/transparency of the classification process. …

Anti-Corruption Principle, The, Zephyr Teachout Jan 2008

Anti-Corruption Principle, The, Zephyr Teachout

Faculty Scholarship

There is a structural anti-corruption principle, akin to federalism or the separation-of-powers principle, embedded in the Constitution. The Constitution was designed, in large part, to protect against corruption. This structural principle - like the other structural principles - should inform how judges "do" modern political process cases. This paper documents the corruption concerns at the Constitutional convention in detail. It then examines how the modern Supreme Courts' conception of corruption is fractured and ahistorical, and has led to an incoherent jurisprudence. Instead of starting with Buckley v. Valeo, as so many modern cases do, the Court should return to the …

Desert And The Eighth Amendment Symposium: Cruel And Unusual Punishment: Litigating Under The Eighth Amendment, Youngjae Lee Jan 2008

Desert And The Eighth Amendment Symposium: Cruel And Unusual Punishment: Litigating Under The Eighth Amendment, Youngjae Lee

Faculty Scholarship

The task of this Article is to evaluate these two approaches to understanding the role of retribution as a constitutional constraint. And in order to do so, I would like to first answer a related question, one step removed: What should be the significance of ordinary intuitions about what people deserve when scholars theorize about what people deserve? If a popular belief about a question of desert does not match up with conclusions arrived at through theorizing and reflections about desert, who should revise their views-"the people" or the theorists? I suggest in this Article that the answer is twofold. …

The Empirics Of Prison Growth: A Critical Review And Path Forward, John F. Pfaff Jan 2008

The Empirics Of Prison Growth: A Critical Review And Path Forward, John F. Pfaff

Faculty Scholarship

A growing empirical literature has sought to explain the forces behind the significant expansion of the U.S. prison population over the past thirty years. Unfortunately, the studies to date have suffered from important methodological, conceptual, and definitional problems that have significantly curtailed their ability to identify causal effects. In this Article, I examine several of the central limitations and discuss remedies. I start by reviewing the theories that investigators have sought to test. I then discuss the studies' empirical defects, such as failing to account for endogenous relationships, overlooking the risk of model dependency, ignoring complex dynamic relationships, using variables …

Motivational Factors Of Seasonal Volunteers: A Study Of The Student Conservation Association, Cory J. Roegner Jan 2008

Motivational Factors Of Seasonal Volunteers: A Study Of The Student Conservation Association, Cory J. Roegner

Graduate Research Papers

The use and efficacy of motivational factors in attracting and retaining employees has become an increasingly important concern within the realm of leisure-service management. Authors of leading text on managing leisure-service organizations have affirmed this dilemma, stating that more research is needed on how to attract, retain, supervise, and motivate employees (Henderson & Bialeschki, 1993; Hoff, Ellis & Crossley, 1988). In recent decades, this need has become particularly true with respect to the motives of seasonal and part-time volunteers (DeGraaf & Edginton, 1992). The field of outdoor recreation/resource management is of no exception. Thus, the purpose of this study was …

DLSU Business & Economics Review

By taking attribute-based measures of service quality, this study establishes clear linkages between customer satisfaction (students) and quality (perception of their experience in the practicum program of the university). The results of this study clearly indicate that student satisfaction is more directly related to functional quality or process of service delivery. The delivery of service through implementation of clear policies and procedures contributed significantly to student satisfaction. The study recommends appropriate internal measures of efficiency and employee compensation as a means to ensure quality and customer satisfaction, and, as a whole, recommends a service marketing system for a high-contact type …
