Recreating Beowulf’S “Pregnant Moment Of Poise”: Pagan Doom And Christian Eucatastrophe Made Incarnate In The Dark Age Setting Of The Lord Of The Rings, Scott Davis Howard
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien recreates the “pregnant moment of poise” that inspired him in his study of Beowulf. Tolkien believed that this moment was a brief period of “fusion” which occurred in the Dark Ages as paganism was in decline and Christianity on the rise, when the dueling notions of Doom and salvation briefly coexisted in the hearts and minds of the Anglo-Saxon people. Derived from a careful study of Tolkien’s fiction, lectures, letters, and the writings of his contemporaries, instructors, and friends, in combination with many Dark Age texts, the works of various Tolkien critics, historians, …
Remember Gay Victims: An Exploration Into The History, Testimony, And Literature Of The Persecution Of Homosexuals By The Third Reich And Their Effect On A Queer Collective Consciousness, Paul D. Vestal
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The persecution of homosexuals by the Nazis under National Socialism during the Second World War has historically been ignored and almost completely erased. However, within the past two and a half decades a significant number of historical, academic, sociological, and literary inquiries and works have uncovered this once forgotten past. Because of these investigations, the anti-homosexual actions inflicted upon gay men by the Third Reich have the ability to impact the continual creation of a queer collective memory and consciousness. Unfortunately, many queers do not know the historic connotations and denotation of the pink triangle—a symbol worn by homosexual males …

Consenting Adults? Why Women Who Submit To Supervisory Sexual Harassment Are Faring Better In Court Than Those Who Say No…And Why They Shouldn’T, Kerri Lynn Stone
Consenting Adults? Why Women Who Submit To Supervisory Sexual Harassment Are Faring Better In Court Than Those Who Say No…And Why They Shouldn’T, Kerri Lynn Stone
Faculty Publications
Today, as a sexual harassment plaintiff who failed to report harassment before bringing suit, you likely will fare better under the law if you submitted to your harasser and engaged in relations with him, than you would if you had passively resisted until you were driven out of your employment. This Article examines the law’s illogical preference for plaintiffs who acquiesced to the propositions of their supervisors over those who resisted harassment but nonetheless failed to report it. It explores the roots of such a preference in society, as well as its consequences. Ultimately, this Article asks critical questions that …

Harassment victims who suffer a "tangible employment action," which the Supreme Court defines as a "significant change in employment status such as hiring, firing, failure to promote, reassignment, or a decision causing a significant change in benefits," enjoy unfettered recourse when they sue their employers. However, victims who do not endure what a court will deem a "tangible employment action" will have their prima facie case of harassment then rendered vulnerable to the interposition of an affirmative defense by a defendant-employer, who will escape liability if it can show "(a) that the employer exercised reasonable care to prevent and correct …

A Study Of Somatic Cell Counts In The Milk Of Holstein-Friesian Cows Managed In Mediterranean Climatic Conditions, Atakan Koç
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Somatic cell counts (SCC) in the milk of Holstein-Friesian (HF) cows were determined by direct microscopic SCC technique. For a two-year period, milk samples were collected monthly from buckets during the morning and evening milkings at 4 different dairy farms. In total, 1,464 SCC readings from 88 HF cows were analyzed by using repeated measures. Herd, lactation month, parity, milking time, and herd interaction effects on SCC were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The average SCC in milk per herd was between 296,483 and 688,811 cells/ml. SCC in milk increased as parity increased. The average SCC in milk from evening milking was about 83,165 cells/ml higher than from morning milking. Improving milking management, reducing stress, providing extra care during the first month of lactation, and milking at a uniform interval will help to decrease SCC in milk and the prevalence of mastitis.

Anticoagulant Rodenticide Intoxication In Animals – A Review, Ivan Valchev, Rumen Binev, Veska Yordanova, Yordan Nikolov
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The newest measures for the control of harmful rodent populations are from the anticoagulant rodenticide group, which are divided into 2 subgroups: first and second generations, and indandione derivatives. Non-target organisms are potentially at risk of direct consumption of baits (primary hazard) and of eating poisoned rodents (secondary hazard). Anticoagulant rodenticides inhibit the enzyme vitamin K-dependent carboxylase and thus impair the reactivation of vitamin K1, indirectly affecting physiological blood coagulation. The diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical signs (massive hemorrhages), laboratory findings, and especially the changes in coagulation markers (APTT, PT, TT, PCT, ACT, FDPs, and PIVKA). The …

Genetic Parameters For Direct And Maternal Effects And Estimation Of Breeding Values For Birth Weight In Brown Swiss Cattle, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Mustafa Saatci, Mehmet Çolak
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Variance components, genetic parameters, and breeding values for birth weight in Brown Swiss cattle reared in Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute were estimated by REML-BLUP procedures using MTDFREML computer programme. Six different animal models were fitted for the trait ranging from a simple to the most comprehensive model. The most detailed model (model 6) provided the best fit to the used dataset. Heritability was higher in the model without maternal effect. Although maternal effect had a significant place for the data, environmental effect due to dam was not important. Heritability (h^2), maternal heritability (m^2), and the genetic correlation between …

A Visual Indication Of Environmental Humidity Using A Color Changing Hologram Recorded In A Self-Developing Photopolymer, Izabela Naydenova, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Vincent Toal, Suzanne Martin
Articles
A reflection hologram for visual indication of environmental humidity has been studied. The hologram is recorded in a self-developing photopolymer and changes color when exposed to a change in humidity and is fully reversible. The range of color change, reversibility, and the response time of the hologram have been studied in a controlled humidity environment. Fully reversible holograms with response times from few seconds to tens of minutes have been designed. Extremely sensitive bright visual humidity indicators, capable of dramatic color change within a few seconds of breathing on them are demonstrated

Implementation Of Phase-Only Modulation Utilizing A Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator, Mohammad Mahmud, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal
Articles
Twisted nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulators, (SLM) are widely used for amplitude modulation of light. The technique for measuring phase and amplitude modulation introduced by a twisted nematic cell is not new but the novelty here is that after characterisation of a Holoeye LC2002 TNLC device we were able to identify specific conditions that allow for its use as a pure 180 degree or more, phase modulator with little or no amplitude modulation at 514.5 nm laser wavelength. The phase shift introduced by the SLM was measured using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The experimentally measured and the theoretically predicted intensity …

Raman Spectroscopy For The Characterization Of The Polymerization Rate In An Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Izabela Naydenova, Hugh Byrne, Suzanne Martin, Robert Howard, Vincent Toal
Articles
Investigations of polymerization rates in an acrylamide-based photopolymer are presented. The polymerization rate for acrylamide and methylenebisacrylamide was determined by monitoring the changes in the characteristic vibrational peaks at 1284 cm-1 and 1607 cm-1 corresponding to the bending mode of CH bond and CC double bonds of acrylamide and in the characteristic peak at 1629 cm-1 corresponding to carbon-carbon double bond of methylenebisacrylamide using Raman spectroscopy. To study the dependence of the polymerization rate on intensity and to find the dependence parameter, the polymerization rate constant was measured at different intensities. A comparison with a commercially available photopolymer shows that …

Estimating Fuel Biomass Of Some Shrub Species (Maquis) In Turkey, Bülent Sağlam, Ömer Küçük, Ertuğrul Bi̇lgi̇li̇, Bahar Di̇nç Durmaz, İsmai̇l Baysal
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Regression equations were developed to estimate shrub fuel biomass of a maquis formation in western Turkey. The relationships between some shrub characteristics and live, dead, available (for consumption), and total fuel biomass were determined by simple/multiple linear regression. Measured biomass values for live, available, and total fuels varied from 0.70 to 6.74 kg m^{-2}, from 0.78 to 3.03 kg m^{-2}, and from 1.06 to 7.72 kg m^{-2}, respectively. The results obtained indicated that shrub fuel biomass could be satisfactorily predicted using the regression equations generated. The resulting equations were able to account for 60% to 89% of the observed variation …
Revocable Trusts And The Law Of Wills: An Imperfect Fit, Alan Newman
Revocable Trusts And The Law Of Wills: An Imperfect Fit, Alan Newman
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Over the centuries that wills have been used to dispose of testators’ property at death, the law of wills has developed to address issues that arose. Similarly, over the centuries that trusts have been used for non-testamentary purposes, the law of trusts has developed to resolve resulting issues.
In recent decades revocable trusts have become the most commonly used trust in the United States. To avoid estate administration, particularly in states in which administration involves cumbersome, time-consuming, and expensive court supervision, settlors make inter vivos transfers of assets that otherwise would be subject to administration on their deaths in trust. …

The dawn of the twenty-first century has ushered in a new age in humankind. Information travels around the world at the speed of light thanks to the Internet, cell phones and communications satellites; industry and science have created advanced technologies and medicines, and transportation has continued to grant more and more humans the ability to leave their ancestral homeland and travel across the globe in a matter of hours. Due to these things, the world seems to be a smaller place. No longer do enormous mountains or vast oceans isolate nations and cultures from each other. Perhaps one of the …

Could And Should America Have Made An Ottoman Republic In 1919?, Paul D. Carrington
Faculty Scholarship
Numerous Americans, perhaps especially American lawyers, have since the 1780s presumed to tell other peoples how to govern themselves. In 2006, that persistent impulse was once again echoed in an address to the American Bar Association by a Justice of the Supreme Court. The purpose of this essay is to question the wisdom of this evangelical ambition, especially when the form of instruction includes military force. It is draws on Spreading America's Word (2005) and directs attention to the hopes of American Protestant Zionists to make a democratic republic in Ottoman Palestine. It suggests that chances were better in 1919 …
Conciliatory Institutions And Constitutional Processes In Post-Conflict States, Donald L. Horowitz
Conciliatory Institutions And Constitutional Processes In Post-Conflict States, Donald L. Horowitz
Faculty Scholarship
There are two important questions in post-conflict constitution making, and at present neither of them has a definitive or uniformly accepted answer. The first relates to the best configuration of institutions to adopt in order to ameliorate the problem of the intergroup conflict. The second concerns the process most apt to produce the best configuration of institutions, whatever it might be. The first question is unanswered because there is a dispute among scholars and practitioners between two opposing views of appropriate institutions to mitigate conflict. Constitutional processes have not generally been geared to yield coherent exemplars of either configuration in …
