Wolfcampian Development Of The Nose Of The Eastern Shelf Of The Midland Basin, Glasscock, Sterling, And Reagan Counties, Texas, Douglas S. Flamm Nov 2008

Wolfcampian Development Of The Nose Of The Eastern Shelf Of The Midland Basin, Glasscock, Sterling, And Reagan Counties, Texas, Douglas S. Flamm

Theses and Dissertations

The nose of the Eastern shelf of the Midland Basin is a prominent structural and depositional feature present in Glasscock, Sterling, and Howard counties, Texas. This feature has been expressed in many regional maps and mentioned in some literature, but has not otherwise been studied significantly. This study looks at the viability of using an acoustic impedance seismic inversion to interpret the 2nd and 3rd order sequence stratigraphy of the southern portion of the nose of the Eastern shelf along with its shelf to basin transition in Glasscock, Sterling, and Reagan counties during the Wolfcampian (Asselian-Sakmarian) time (Early Permian). The …

Interview With Bill Young, Bill Young, California State University, Monterey Bay Nov 2008

Interview With Bill Young, Bill Young, California State University, Monterey Bay

Chinatown Renewal Project

The Interview starts with what Mr. Young knows about his family coming over from China where he is not fairly lucid of his early memories then jumps around to different points, such as his time working in the Salinas Drive-in market to when he was in the military, then back to Salinas, back to the military and then back to Salinas, each time going to a different period in time. His stories about World War Two are just as lucid as his stories of Korea and he recalls family history of his grandfather being a merchant, that his grandmother was …

Thesis For A Thesis, Marc J. Neveu Nov 2008

Thesis For A Thesis, Marc J. Neveu

Architecture

My lecture today will question the nature of a thesis project for an undergraduate architectural education. The topic of my lecture – the nature of a thesis – is probably of concern to many of you, either presently engaged in thesis preparations or those of you who will be thinking about your topics in the next few years. I will first question the nature of what a thesis may be and then propose one approach to making a thesis. The third part of the lecture will offer two examples.

Dynamic Market Impacts Of Generic Dairy Advertising, Charles F. Nicholson, Harry M. Kaiser Nov 2008

Dynamic Market Impacts Of Generic Dairy Advertising, Charles F. Nicholson, Harry M. Kaiser

Agribusiness

Generic advertising of fluid milk and cheese represents the principal promotional activity undertaken with the $370 million per year provided by dairy farmers and fluid milk processors. This article describes a stock-flow-feedback simulation model that includes 17 intermediate and final dairy products, short-term and long-term milk supply response and government policies that influence the impacts of generic advertising on net revenues for dairy farmers. Permanent increases in generic advertising expenditures increase net revenues for dairy farmers, with a cumulative net benefit to cost ratio of 2.8. Permanent decreases produce a larger reduction in net revenues and indicate a net benefit …

A Matlab Package For Markov Chain Monte Carlo With A Multi-Unidimensional Irt Model, Yanyan Sheng Nov 2008

A Matlab Package For Markov Chain Monte Carlo With A Multi-Unidimensional Irt Model, Yanyan Sheng

Publications

Unidimensional item response theory (IRT) models are useful when each item is designed to measure some facet of a unified latent trait. In practical applications, items are not necessarily measuring the same underlying trait, and hence the more general multi-unidimensional model should be considered. This paper provides the requisite information and description of software that implements the Gibbs sampler for such models with two item parameters and a normal ogive form. The software developed is written in the MATLAB package IRTmu2no. The package is flexible enough to allow a user the choice to simulate binary response data with multiple dimensions, …

Impact Of Changes In The Microclimatic Conditions On Species Diversity Of Insectivorous Plants At Karungalagudi, (Tn) India, S. Ramya Et Al. Nov 2008

Impact Of Changes In The Microclimatic Conditions On Species Diversity Of Insectivorous Plants At Karungalagudi, (Tn) India, S. Ramya Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

A study on the interrelationship between the factors influencing vegetation change and composition of insectivorous plant community was carried out at Karungalagudi, India. Anthropogenic intervention at this site due to industrial development, agro-industrial pollution, mining, quarrying has accelerated the pace by which the microclimatic and environmental conditions have shown ever-changing temporal and special variation. This has resulted in alteration in community composition of insectivorous plants at this consortium. Anthropogenic activities along with changes in ecological process have altered the microclimatic conditions conducive for the sustenance of the tiny plant association among the members of insectivorous (Droseraceae, Lentibulariaceae), non insectivorous (Eriocaulaceae, …

Ethnomedicinal Perspectives Of Botanicals Used By Malayali Tribes In Vattal Hills Of Dharmapuri (Tn), India, S. Ramya Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

An ethnobotanical survey was conducted to collect information about the medicinal plants used by Malayali tribes in Dharmapuri district Tamilnadu, India. Informations presented here were gathered from Malayali tribes using an integrated approach of botanical collections and interview schedules. A total of 7 informants were interviewed and 27 ethno medicinal plant species distributed in 16 families have been documented. Medicinal plants used by Malayali tribes have been listed along with plant parts used with its medicinal significance. For most of the ailments fresh plant materials were invariably used. Further, it could be inferred that plants were most commonly used to …

The Antecedents Of Simultaneous Appointments To Ceo And Chair, Wallace N. Davidson Iii, Yixi Ning, David Rakowski, Eahab Elsaid Nov 2008

The Antecedents Of Simultaneous Appointments To Ceo And Chair, Wallace N. Davidson Iii, Yixi Ning, David Rakowski, Eahab Elsaid

Publications

In relay succession, boards add the Chair title to successful CEOs, creating duality. Sometimes boards by-pass relay succession and appoint an individual directly into the dual position. We propose that this will occur when there is the need for an unambiguous leader and when the appointee has greater bargaining power. We show that following the firing of the predecessor, when the successor is an outsider, and when the successor is not the designated heir, the incidence of simultaneous dual appointments increases. We also find that executives appointed into the dual positions are older than those appointed only as a CEO.

The Effect Of Clustering On The Uncertainty Of Differential Reflectivity Measurements, A. R. Jameson, A. B. Kostinski Nov 2008

The Effect Of Clustering On The Uncertainty Of Differential Reflectivity Measurements, A. R. Jameson, A. B. Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

One of the most important avenues of recent meteorological radar research is the application of polarization techniques to improve radar rainfall estimation. A keystone in many of these methods is the so-called differential reflectivity ZDR, the ratio of the reflectivity factor ZH at horizontal polarization backscattered from a horizontally polarized transmission to that corresponding to a vertically polarized transmission ZV. For such quantitative applications, it is important to understand the statistical accuracy of observations of ZDR. The underlying assumption of all past estimations of meteorological radar uncertainties is that the signals obey Rayleigh …

Temperature- And Phase-Independent Lateral Force Sensor Based On A Core-Offset Multi-Mode Fiber Interferometer, Bo Dong, Da-Peng Zhou, Li Wei, Wing-Ki Liu, John W.Y. Lit Nov 2008

Temperature- And Phase-Independent Lateral Force Sensor Based On A Core-Offset Multi-Mode Fiber Interferometer, Bo Dong, Da-Peng Zhou, Li Wei, Wing-Ki Liu, John W.Y. Lit

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A novel lateral force sensor based on a core-offset multi-mode fiber (MMF) interferometer is reported. High extinction ratio can be obtained by misaligning a fused cross section between the single-mode fiber (SMF) and MMF. With the variation of the lateral force applied to a short section of the MMF, the extinction ratio changes while the interference phase remains almost constant. The change of the extinction ratio is independent of temperature variations. The proposed force sensor has the advantages of temperature- and phase-independency, high extinction ratio sensitivity, good repeatability, low cost, and simple structure. Moreover, the core-offset MMF interferometer is expected …

State Of Polarization Of A Stochastic Electromagnetic Beam In An Optical Resonator, Olga Korotkova, Min Yao, Yangjian Cai, Halil T. Eyyuboglu, Yahya Baykal Nov 2008

State Of Polarization Of A Stochastic Electromagnetic Beam In An Optical Resonator, Olga Korotkova, Min Yao, Yangjian Cai, Halil T. Eyyuboglu, Yahya Baykal

Physics Articles and Papers

On the basis of the unified theory of coherence and polarization, we investigate the behavior of the state of polarization of a stochastic electromagnetic beam in a Gaussian cavity. Formulations both in terms of Stokes parameters and in terms of polarization ellipse are given. We show that the state of polarization stabilizes, except in the case of a lossless cavity, after several passages between the mirrors, exhibiting monotonic or oscillatory behavior depending on the parameters of the resonator. We also find that an initially (spatially) uniformly polarized beam remains nonuniformly polarized even for a large number of passages between the …
