Sweet Corn Population Effects On Yield And Ear Quality, 2007, Elizabeth T. Maynard Jan 2008

Sweet Corn Population Effects On Yield And Ear Quality, 2007, Elizabeth T. Maynard

Purdue Fruit and Vegetable Research Reports

"Current recommendations for fresh market sweet corn suggest row spacing of 30 to 40 inches and in-row spacing of 8 to 10 inches for early varieties and 9 to 12 inches for late varieties. This corresponds to populations from 13,068 to 26,136 plants per acre. Variety trials at Pinney-Purdue Agricultural Center have been planted at row spacings of 30 or 36 inches and populations of 20,328 plants per acre. Some cultivars may perform well at higher populations. This trial was conducted to evaluate yield and ear characteristics of two cultivars at populations up to 50% higher than normally used in …

On-Farm Evaluation Of Tomato Cultivars For Disease Resistance, 2007, Dan Egel, Butch Zandstra, Elizabeth T. Maynard Jan 2008

On-Farm Evaluation Of Tomato Cultivars For Disease Resistance, 2007, Dan Egel, Butch Zandstra, Elizabeth T. Maynard

Purdue Fruit and Vegetable Research Reports

"Bacterial spot of tomatoes (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria) causes lesions on leaves, stems, and fruit. Under hot, humid, rainy conditions, defoliation can result in a loss of yield. In addition, lesions on fruit result in a direct loss of marketability. This disease is managed primarily with applications of fixed copper bactericides, crop rotations, greenhouse sanitation, and healthy seed/transplants. Even in properly managed commercial fields, however, bacterial spot can cause yield losses. Although there are no varieties with complete resistance to bacterial spot, we report here the results of an on-farm trial that indicate some varieties may have partial resistance."

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Background: The ascomycete fungus Cercospora zeae-maydis is an aggressive foliar pathogen of maize that causes substantial losses annually throughout the Western Hemisphere. Despite its impact on maize production, little is known about the regulation of pathogenesis in C. zeae-maydis at the molecular level. The objectives of this study were to generate a collection of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from C. zeae-maydis and evaluate their expression during vegetative, infectious, and reproductive growth. Results: A total of 27,551 ESTs was obtained from five cDNA libraries constructed from vegetative and sporulating cultures of C. zeae-maydis. The ESTs, grouped into 4088 clusters and 531 …

Strategies For Institutional Repository Development: A Case Study Of Three Evolving Initiatives, Carole L. Palmer, Lauren C. Teffeau, Mark P. Newton

Libraries Research Publications

As an evolving part of the profession of librarianship, institutional repository development is still in the process of establishing guiding principles and best practices. There is no one path to follow and few established cases from which to learn about development options and risks. This case study presents a close examination of the approaches taken at three university libraries, comparing choices, strategies, and conditions driving development activities. The most pronounced differences stem from how the initiatives are balancing content acquisition and service provision. Across cases, intellectual property concerns are prevalent, and repository goals and policies are often implicit, with the …

Teaching Students To Use Company And Industry Information During Their Job Search, Jeremy R. Garritano Jan 2008

Teaching Students To Use Company And Industry Information During Their Job Search, Jeremy R. Garritano

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Libraries and educational institutions provide access to a wide variety of resources that are useful in investigating potential employers, preparing for interviews, and predicting trends in industry. However, often this information is not found in traditional scientific and tech. resources that many chem. and chem. engineering students are familiar with using. This paper will present a no. of strategies for using company and industry resources to look at financial information, industry developments, and opinions of current employees, among other attributes, to better help student prep. themselves for the job market. Enhancing Information Resources And Instruction With Computational And Chemical Software, Jeremy R. Garritano Jan 2008

Enhancing Information Resources And Instruction With Computational And Chemical Software, Jeremy R. Garritano

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

As the Chemistry Library begins to move journal subscriptions to electronic only access and experiments with e-books, physical space in the Library has been reallocated. One such transformation has allowed for installation of ten new computers within the Library. Not only do these workstations mirror current workstations throughout the rest of the University Libraries system, but they also have been enhanced with additional software for visualization, statistical anal., and data manipulation. As our users deal with more and more data compared to text based resources, adding these computational workstations appeared to be the next logical step. Besides being an open …

Curating Chemistry Data Through Its Lifecycle: A Collaboration Between Library And Laboratory In Scientific Data Preservation, Jeremy R. Garritano, Jake R. Carlson

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Collaborating with the Center for Authentic Science Practice in Education (CASPiE), the Purdue University Libraries have created a model for the capture and preservation of data as part of the experimental workflow. In the CASPiE program, students work closely with a faculty researcher on a real world research problem and generate data using a networked system of scientific instrumentation. The data may pass through three stages in its lifecycle. First, the data is the student's record within the course and therefore has educational value. Second, the data also supports the scientist's work and therefore has research value. Finally, the data …

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of A Rf Plasma Micro-Thruster, J D. Olliges, A D. Ketsdever, W B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko, I Hrbud Jan 2008

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of A Rf Plasma Micro-Thruster, J D. Olliges, A D. Ketsdever, W B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko, I Hrbud

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

A prototype RF plasma micro-thruster has been investigated numerically and experimentally. The experimental results were obtained on a thrust stand capable of micro-Newton resolution. Thrust and mass flow (hence specific impulse) were measured for an argon propellant at mass flows ranging from 0.4 to 5.5 mg/s. An increase over the cold gas thrust of up to 20% was observed for a discharge frequency of 100 MHz and an input power of 77 W. Propulsive efficiency was seen to increase both experimentally and numerically for increasing mass flow and decreasing discharge frequency.

Plasma-Neutral Heat Transfer In Coaxial Rf Argon Discharges, William B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko, Ivana Hrbud Jan 2008

Plasma-Neutral Heat Transfer In Coaxial Rf Argon Discharges, William B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko, Ivana Hrbud

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo Collision (PIC/MCC) algorithms comprise a numerical model to assess the discharge characteristics of an RF plasma microthruster concept that exploits an RF capacitively coupled discharge (RFCCD) to heat a propellant. The effects of heat transfer between the discharge and the neutral species on microthruster performance are discussed. Heat transfer within the plasma discharge has been shown to greatly affect the discharge characteristics and thruster performance. Increasing the neutral temperature reduces the amount of power transmitted into the fluid through a reduction of the neutral density, and thus reduces effectiveness of the discharge. The PIC/MCC modeling showed that the …

Experimental And Computational Study Of Area And Perimeter Contributions To Radiometer Forces, N P. Selden, S F. Gimelshein, E P. Muntz, Alina A. Alexeenko, A D. Ketsdever

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

The relative contribution to the radiometric force of the area and perimeter of the vane is studied experimentally and numerically. Experimentally, a circular vane, a low-aspect rectangular vane, and a high-aspect rectangular vane were all tested on a force balance, with nano-Newton resolution, placed in a stagnant gas. The computational results were obtained through 2-D simulations using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method, as well as a discrete ordinate solution of the ES model kinetic equation. Gas pressure was varied from 0.006 to 6 Pa, which was a broad enough range to observe the characteristic peak force production of a …
