On Imaging Air Pollutants In An Urban Street Canyon Using Tomographic-Doas, Stephen O'Driscoll Jan 2008

On Imaging Air Pollutants In An Urban Street Canyon Using Tomographic-Doas, Stephen O'Driscoll

Theses

A novel imaging technique based on the combination of differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) and tomographic reconstruction is presented. This approach, called Tomographic-DOAS, makes it possible to image the spatial distribution of multiple pollutants in an arbitrary region of the atmosphere. Tomographic-DOAS relies on a mathematical model relating measurements of differential optical density to an underlying spatial distribution of pollutants. This model requires the development of an optical system capable of generating multibeam paths or sensing geometries. The optical instrumentation used to construct such sensing geometries is described and a novel scanning beam arrangement that allows a single beam DOAS …

"Assessing The Attitudes Of Regional Business Toward Research And Development (R&D) And Networking Activities In The South West Of Ireland", Denis O'Flaherty Jan 2008

"Assessing The Attitudes Of Regional Business Toward Research And Development (R&D) And Networking Activities In The South West Of Ireland", Denis O'Flaherty

Theses

This project seeks to understand and measure the levels of Research and Development (R&D) and Networking Activity amongst regional business in the South West of Ireland. The South West region of Ireland is a unique and beautiful place, but presents challenges and obstacles in terms of running a business within the region.

It is now generally accepted by policy-makers that Ireland is going to become increasingly dependent upon its indigenous businesses, most of which can be classified as Small-to- Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The question of R&D and networking was framed within the context of location, given the physical characteristics of …

“Cabhair Is Cairde Is Grásta Ó Dhia Chugainn" : A Study Of The "Saíocht" Of A Parish In Co. Clare., Flan Garvey

Theses

This research is based on a rural parish, Inagh-Kilnamona, in mid North Clare. It deals with its physical hinterland, its people, past and present, its history and folklore. Over the centuries, its people have moulded the land. The buildings and infrastructure represent man-made heritage and although the area would have been described as ‘wild’ some hundreds of years ago, it has been transformed by man into being what it is today, a modem place with a modem society, a changed society but still deeply rooted in its past.

The time has come to excavate the past by research to give …

The Application Of Social Marketing In Reducing Road Traffic Accidents Among Young Male Drivers - An Investigation Using Physical Fear Threat Appeals., Brian Harman Jan 2008

The Application Of Social Marketing In Reducing Road Traffic Accidents Among Young Male Drivers - An Investigation Using Physical Fear Threat Appeals., Brian Harman

Theses

In 2004, the Irish government rolled out its new two year road safety strategy which aimed to reduce road deaths in the Republic of Ireland to no more than 300 road fatalities by 2006. The strategy failed to reach its target. There were 368 road fatalities on Irish roads in 2006. The effects of the penalty points system, which was introduced in 2003, is considered responsible for reducing Irish road fatality figures to their lowest level since 1964 (335 deaths). However the beneficial effects of the penalty points system have proved transitory and road deaths have risen in recent years. …

Management Challenges Of A Culturally Diverse Workforce In The Irish Hotel Sector: An Investigative Study Of Four And Five Star Hotels In Cork, Amy Jordan Jan 2008

Management Challenges Of A Culturally Diverse Workforce In The Irish Hotel Sector: An Investigative Study Of Four And Five Star Hotels In Cork, Amy Jordan

Theses

In recent years Ireland has changed from a nation of emigration to one of immigration, facilitated by the Irish Celtic Tiger, the globalisation of labour markets and the erosion of labour restrictions across frontiers. Thus there is increased employee diversity in the Irish work environment, with many different races, cultures, norms, values and religions now in evidence in the Irish workforce. These changes have a significant effect on managers as the Irish workplace becomes increasingly culturally heterogeneous, and forms the basis for change in management practice.

Primary research was undertaken in the form of six interviews with hotel managers to …

Rotavirus infections are considered to be the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis in children under the age of 5 years, and are responsible for up to 611,000 deaths annually, mainly in developing countries. From 1997 to 1999, 16 hospital laboratories in the Republic of Ireland reported to detection of 4,643 cases of rotaviral disease, while in 2004 and 2005 and increase of 1,600 and 2,251 rotavirus cases were reported. These rotavirus cases have a significant impact on the healthcare system with the minimum cost per case being €728.40. A large percentage of the infections were reported in neonates, suggesting …

Optimization In Multi-Agent Systems : Structures And Procedures, Ingo Stengel Jan 2008

Optimization In Multi-Agent Systems : Structures And Procedures, Ingo Stengel

Theses

The main advantage for the use of agent technology is in the capacity of agents to represent the interests of individual entities and to act autonomously on their behalf. In multi-agent systems this involves communication, coordination and negotiation.

The focus of this dissertation is to find ways to optimize multi-agent systems at different levels by taking into consideration their structure and the procedures used. As optimization depends to a large extent on the problem to be solved, group forming scenarios, in which self-interested agents compete to form and join groups, have been selected here for consideration. Optimization issues are discussed …

A Distributed Ai Approach For Large-Scale Wlan Design, Alan Mcgibney Jan 2008

A Distributed Ai Approach For Large-Scale Wlan Design, Alan Mcgibney

Theses

The recent dramatic trend towards always-on-connectivity has driven the need for mobile ubiquitous computing environments with the advent of the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) seeing a shift from traditional wired networks to wireless networking. A WLAN typically contains a number of access points that allow wireless enabled clients access information and network resources such as the internet without the need for wires, offering flexibility and mobility to the users. Initial wireless networks were convenience based allowing users access to the primary wired network, and involved little planning prior to roll-out. The proliferation of low cost wireless devices combined wdth …

Revising Cio-Cio-San, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2008

Revising Cio-Cio-San, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Some of the mast extensive and significant textual changes in all of Puccini's operas appear in the published revisions of Madama Butterfly. Many of these verbal modifications, together with cuts and additions to the score, influence the dramatic depiction of the protagonists. Changes to Pinkerton's character soften an insensitive and even offensive figure who, after all, needs to be convincing as the object of Butterfly's love. For Cio-Cio-San, three rounds of revision mean a gradual loss of complexity on any fronts, bringing an exotic, mercurial heroine closer to operatic convention. The Butterfly that we know today has a more …

Employment Discrimination Remedies: The Shape Of Lawsuits, The Shape Of The Law: Proceedings Of The 2008 Annual Meeting Association Of American Law Schools Section On Employment Discrimination Law And Section On Remedies, Michael P. Allen, Paul M. Secunda, Julie C. Suk, Tristin K. Green, Brad Seligman, Elaine W. Shoben

Articles

The article examines the effectiveness of legal frameworks and corporate practices in addressing employment discrimination, contrasting the French criminal approach with the U.S. reliance on civil remedies and diversity initiatives. It argues that while criminal investigations in France have successfully uncovered and punished discriminatory hiring practices, U.S. corporations often evade meaningful change through ineffective diversity training and lack robust accountability mechanisms. The analysis underscores the need for structural reforms in the U.S., emphasizing the importance of accountability and flexibility in consent decrees to drive lasting progress in diversity and inclusion.

Development Of An Automated Method For Csf Bilirubin Measurement., Helen Caverley Jan 2008

Development Of An Automated Method For Csf Bilirubin Measurement., Helen Caverley

Theses

Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a potentially fatal condition which can be difficult to accurately diagnose. Patients often present with a second bleed which can be more damaging than the initial bleed. Diagnosis of SAH centres on computed tomography (CT) scans. However, 2% of patients positive for SAH will present as negative on CT scans. It is recommended that these patients have lumbar puncture and the CSF is analysed for bilirubin. The presence of bilirubin is suggestive of SAH. Spectrophotometric scanning involves expensive equipment which is often not available in routine settings. A need exists for a robust, inexpensive, automated method …

Analysis Of Adenovirus And Bovine Coronavirus., Kevin Lane Jan 2008

Analysis Of Adenovirus And Bovine Coronavirus., Kevin Lane

Theses

This investigation involved the analysis of selected gastroenteritis viruses, adenovirus and bovine coronavirus, obtained from faecal samples, collected from hospital and diagnostic laboratories respectively in Cork city, Ireland. The viruses isolated from these samples were subjected to analysis using cell culture and nucleic acid extraction. In addition adenovirus was analysed using PCR and PCR followed by restriction endonuclease digest. Many samples contained more than one gastroenteritis virus, the virus of interest and a natural co-infection with rotavirus species. Rotavirus infections in Ireland have been extensively studied and we were interested in studying singly and doubly infect samples.

Bovine enteric coronavirus …

Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of A Networking Context Aware Policy Environment, Asanga Dhammika Udugama Jan 2008

Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of A Networking Context Aware Policy Environment, Asanga Dhammika Udugama

Theses

Future mobile networks are anticipated to have support to access heterogeneous access technologies. An important question in such environments is the decisions on when to use what access network. These decisions must take the users and mobile network operators’ perspectives into consideration. The operators usually have a focus of always-best-managed networks while the users have an always-best-connected focus. A key enabler of such environments is the use of policies to perform these handover decisions. These policies, which must be dynamic in nature, should be configurable when the requirements change. Policy decisions are always made based on the current context of …

Elliptic Curve Cryptography Security On Restricted Mobile Devices, Debbie Mccann Jan 2008

Elliptic Curve Cryptography Security On Restricted Mobile Devices, Debbie Mccann

Theses

Mobile technologies with limited resources, such as smart phones or PDAs, have increased dramatically in popularity. However, the level of security provided for these technologies has not kept pace with the value of the data that they contain or transmit.

Wireless networks usually provide some security, in the form of encryption. GSM and GPRS use different forms of the A5 algorithm, and Wi-Fi uses WEP or WPA. These encryption algorithms have proven weaknesses and in some cases have been efficiently cracked. To improve the security of wireless networks, stronger encryption algorithms need to be developed. One of the most attractive …

Gender Bias Of Cardiovascular Risk In Caucasian Type Ii Diabetics: A Haemostatic Explanation?, William Quirke Jan 2008

Gender Bias Of Cardiovascular Risk In Caucasian Type Ii Diabetics: A Haemostatic Explanation?, William Quirke

Theses

People with type II diabetes are disproportionately affected by cardiovascular disease compared to those without diabetes. The relative risk of cardiovascular disease caused by type II diabetes is higher in females than in males. This risk has not been fully explained by traditional risk factors and attention has turned to the possible role of haemostatic abnormalities in explaining the excess cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among diabetic females. We examined specific parameters of the coagulation (factor VII, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor, fibrinogen) and fibrinolytic (plasminogen activator inhibitor- 1, thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor) system in 113 Irish Caucasian type II diabetics to …
