The branching fractions of D-s(+/-) meson decays serve to normalize many measurements of processes involving charm quarks. Using 298 pb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collisions recorded at a center of mass energy of 4.17 GeV, we determine absolute branching fractions for eight D-s(+/-) decays with a double tag technique. In particular we determine the branching fraction B(D-s(+)-> K-K+pi(+))=(5.50 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.16)%, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We also provide partial branching fractions for kinematic subsets of the K-K+pi(+) decay mode.

Using e(+) e(-) -> D-s(*-) D-s(+) data collected near the peak D-s production energy, E-cm = 4170 MeV, with the CLEO-c detector, we present the first observation of the decay D-s(+) -> p (n) over bar. We measure a branching fraction B(D-s(+) -> p (n) over bar) = (1.30 +/- 0.36(-0.16)(+0.12)) x 10(-3). This is the first observation of a charmed meson decaying into a baryon-antibaryon final state.

We exploit the quantum coherence between pair-produced D-0 and (D) over bar (0) in psi(3770) decays to study charm mixing, which is characterized by the parameters x and y, and to make a first determination of the relative strong phase delta between D-0 -> K+pi(-) and (D) over bar (0)-> K+pi(-). Using 281 pb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collision data collected with the CLEO-c detector at E-cm=3.77 GeV, as well as branching fraction input and time-integrated measurements of R-M equivalent to(x(2)+y(2))/2 and R-WS equivalent to Gamma(D-0 -> K+pi(-))/Gamma((D) over bar (0)-> K+pi(-)) from other experiments, we find cos delta=1.03(-0.17)(+0.31) +/- 0.06, where …

By using 1.8 x 10(6) D (D) over bar pairs, we have measured B(D-0 --> pi(-)e(+)nu(e)) = 0.299(11)(9)%, B(D+ --> pi(0)e(+)nu(e)) = 0.373(22)(13)%, B(D-0 --> K(-)e(+)nu(e)) = 3.56(3)(9)%, and B(D+ --> K(0)e(+)nu(e)) = 8.53(13) x (23)% and have studied the q(2) dependence of the form factors. By combining our results with recent lattice calculations, we obtain vertical bar V-cd vertical bar = 0.217(9)(4)(23) and vertical bar V-cs vertical bar = 1.015(10)(11)(106).

We present measurements of D -> K-S(0)pi and D -> K-L(0)pi branching fractions using 281 pb(-1) of psi(3770) data at the CLEO-c experiment. We find that B(D-0 -> K-S(0)pi(0)) is larger than B(D-0 -> K-L(0)pi(0)), with an asymmetry of R(D-0)=0.108 +/- 0.025 +/- 0.024. For B(D+-> K-S(0)pi(+)) and B(D+-> K-L(0)pi(+)), we observe no measurable difference; the asymmetry is R(D+)=0.022 +/- 0.016 +/- 0.018. The D-0 asymmetry is consistent with the value based on the U-spin prediction A(D-0 -> K-0 pi(0))/A(D-0 ->(K) over bar (0)pi(0))=-tan(2)theta(C), where theta(C) is the Cabibbo angle.

Microscopic Origin Of Magnetoelectric Coupling In Noncollinear Multiferroics, J. P. Hu

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

An universal microscopic mechanism to understand the interplay between the electric and magnetic degrees of freedom in noncollinear multiferroics is developed. In a system with a strong spin-orbit coupling, we show that there is a pure electric mechanism that the ferroelectricity is generated by noncollinear magnetism through an electric current cancellation process, which saves the pure electric energy. This mechanism provides a simple estimation and sets a physical limitation of the value of ferroelectricity in noncollinear multiferroic materials.

We investigate effects of lateral confinement on spin splitting of energy levels in 2D hole gases grown on [311] GaAs. We found that lateral confinement enhances anisotropy of spin splitting relative to the 2D gas for both confining directions. Unexpectedly, the effective g factor does not depend on the 1D energy level number N for B parallel to[0 (1) over bar1] while it has strong N dependence for B parallel to[(2) over bar 33]. Apart from quantitative difference in the spin splitting of energy levels for the two orthogonal confinement directions, we also report qualitative differences in the appearance of …

Using a sample of tagged D-s(+) decays collected near the (DsDs -/+)-D-*+/- peak production energy in e(+)e(-) collisions with the CLEO-c detector, we study the leptonic decay D-s(+)->tau(+)nu(tau) via the decay channel tau(+)-> e(+)nu(e)(nu) over bar (tau). We measure B(D-s(+)->tau(+)nu(tau))=(6.17 +/- 0.71 +/- 0.34)%, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Combining this result with our measurements of D-s(+)->mu(+)nu(mu) and D-s(+)->tau(+)nu(tau) (via tau(+)->pi(+)(nu) over bar (tau)), we determine f(Ds)=(274 +/- 10 +/- 5) MeV.

Atomic Force Microscope Local Oxidation Nanolithography Of Graphene, L. S. Weng, L. Y. Zhang, Y. P. Chen, L. P. Rokhinson

We demonstrate the local oxidation nanopatterning of graphene films by an atomic force microscope. The technique provides a method to form insulating trenches in graphene flakes and to fabricate nanodevices with sub-nanometer precision. We demonstrate fabrication of a 25-nm-wide nanoribbon and submicron size nanoring from a graphene flake. We also found that we can write either trenches or bumps on the graphene surface depending on the lithography conditions. We attribute the bumps to partial oxidation of the surface and incorporation of oxygen into the graphene lattice. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Magnetic Excitations In The High-T-C Iron Pnictides, D. X. Yao, E. W. Carlson Jan 2008

Magnetic Excitations In The High-T-C Iron Pnictides, D. X. Yao, E. W. Carlson

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We calculate the expected finite frequency neutron-scattering intensity based on the two-sublattice collinear antiferromagnet found by recent neutron-scattering experiments as well as by theoretical analysis on the iron oxypnictide LaOFeAs. We consider two types of superexchange couplings between Fe atoms: nearest-neighbor coupling J(1) and next-nearest-neighbor coupling J(2). We show how to distinguish experimentally between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic J(1). Whereas magnetic excitations in the cuprates display a so-called resonance peak at (pi, pi) (corresponding to a saddlepoint in the magnetic spectrum), which is at a wave vector that is at least close to nesting Fermi-surface-like structures-no such corresponding excitations exist in …

Quantum Mechanics Of Superconducting Nanowires, S. Khlebnikov Jan 2008

Quantum Mechanics Of Superconducting Nanowires, S. Khlebnikov

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

In a short superconducting nanowire connected to bulk superconducting leads, quantum phase slips behave as a system of linearly (as opposed to logarithmically) interacting charges. This system maps onto quantum mechanics of a particle in a periodic potential. We show that, while the state with a high density of phase slips is not a true insulator (a consequence of Josephson tunneling between the leads), for a range of parameters it behaves as such down to unobservably small temperatures. We also show that quantum phase slips give rise to multiple branches (bands) in the energy-current relation and to an interband ("exciton") …

Absence Of Certain Exchange Driven Instabilities Of An Electron Gas At High Densities, G. F. Giuliani, G. Vignale Jan 2008

Absence Of Certain Exchange Driven Instabilities Of An Electron Gas At High Densities, G. F. Giuliani, G. Vignale

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

In the high-density limit the exchange energy easily overcomes the correlation energy in both two- and three-dimensional electron liquids. It is therefore reasonable to inquire if the class of exchange driven instabilities first discussed by Overhauser within the Hartree-Fock theory could be of relevance in this limit. Our analysis shows that this is not the case at least for distorted states represented by a single Slater determinant.

Coherent Stokes Raman Spectroscopy Of Conduction Electron Spin Flip Transitions In Cd1-Xfexte: A Van Vleck Paramagnet, A. Winter, H. Pascher, H. Krenn, I. Miotkowski, A. K. Ramdas

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The conduction-band spin splitting in Cd1-xFexTe bulk crystals is delineated on the basis of the Raman transitions manifested in coherent Stokes Raman scattering (CSRS). The independence at low temperatures and absence of saturation at high magnetic fields displayed by the Raman shift are characteristic of Van Vleck paramagnetism of Fe2+ interacting with s-like conduction electrons via the s-d exchange interaction. The exchange constant (N-0 alpha) deduced from these experiments is (255 +/- 10)meV. When Fe2+ concentration (x) exceeds similar to 0.002 the intrinsic negative g-factor of electrons in CdTe is compensated by the positive s-d exchange interaction. The separation of …

Xxz And Ising Spins On The Triangular Kagome Lattice, D. X. Yao, Y. L. Loh, E. W. Carlson, M. Ma

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The recently fabricated two-dimensional magnetic materials Cu9X2(cpa)(6)center dot xH(2)O (cpa=2-carboxypentonic acid and X=F,Cl,Br) have copper sites which form a triangular kagome lattice (TKL), formed by introducing small triangles ("a-trimers") inside of each kagome triangle ("b-trimer"). We show that in the limit where spins residing on b-trimers have Ising character, quantum fluctuations of XXZ spins residing on the a-trimers can be exactly accounted for in the absence of applied field. This is accomplished through a mapping to the kagome Ising model, for which exact analytic solutions exist. We derive the complete finite-temperature phase diagram for this XXZ-Ising model, including the residual …

We report determination of branching fractions for the decays psi(2S)-> h+J/psi, where h=any, pi(+)pi(-), pi(0)pi(0), eta, pi(0), and gamma gamma through chi(c0,1,2). These measurements use 27M psi(2S) decays produced in e(+)e(-) collision data collected with the CLEO detector. The resulting branching fractions and ratios thereof improve upon previously achieved precision in all cases, and in combination with other measurements permit determination of B(chi(cJ)->gamma J/psi) and B(psi(2S)-> light hadrons).

Context. Primary cosmic rays experience multiple deflections in the non-uniform galactic and heliospheric magnetic fields which may generate anisotropies. Aims. A study of anisotropies in the energy range between 100 and 500 GeV is performed. This energy range is not yet well explored. Methods. The L3 detector at the CERN electron-positron collider, LEP, is used for a study of the angular distribution of atmospheric muons with energies above 20 GeV. This distribution is used to investigate the isotropy of the time-dependent intensity of the primary cosmic-ray flux with a Fourier analysis. Results. A small deviation from isotropy at energies around …

We report the first observation of the decay J/psi -> 3 gamma. The signal has a statistical significance of 6 sigma and corresponds to a branching fraction of B(J/psi -> 3 gamma)=(1.2 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.2)x10(-5), in which the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The measurement uses psi(2S)->pi(+)pi(-)J/psi events acquired with the CLEO-c detector operating at the CESR e(+)e(-) collider.

We exploit the quantum coherence between pair-produced D-0 and (D) over bar (0) in psi(3770) decays to study charm mixing, which is characterized by the parameters x and y, and to make a first determination of the relative strong phase delta between doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D-0 -> K+pi(-) and Cabibbo-favored (D) over bar (0)-> K+pi(-). We analyze a sample of 1.0 x 10(6) D-0(D) over bar (0) pairs from 281 pb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collision data collected with the CLEO-c detector at E-cm=3.77 GeV. By combining CLEO-c measurements with branching fraction input and time-integrated measurements of R-M equivalent to (x(2)+y(2))/2 and R-WS …

Using a sample of 2.59x10(7) psi(2S) decays collected by the CLEO-c detector, we present results of a study of chi(cJ) (J=0, 1, 2) decays into baryon-antibaryon final states. We present the world's most precise measurements of the chi(cJ)-> p (P) over bar and chi(cJ)->Lambda(Lambda) over bar branching fractions, and the first measurements of chi(c0) decays to other hyperons. These results illuminate the decay mechanism of the chi(c) states.

We report inelastic neutron scattering studies of magnetic excitations in antiferromagnetically ordered SrFe2As2 (TN=200–220 K), the parent compound of the FeAs-based superconductors. At low temperatures (T=7 K), the magnetic spectrum S(Q,[h-bar]omega) consists of a Bragg peak at the elastic position ([h-bar]omega=0 meV), a spin gap (Delta<=6.5 meV), and sharp spin-wave excitations at higher energies. Based on the observed dispersion relation, we estimate the effective magnetic exchange coupling using a Heisenberg model. On warming across TN, the low-temperature spin gap rapidly closes, with weak critical scattering and spin-spin correlations in the paramagnetic state. The antiferromagnetic order in SrFe2As2 is therefore consistent with a first order phase transition, similar to the structural lattice distortion.

We search for a non-SM-like CP-odd Higgs boson (a10) decaying to tau+tau- or µ+µ- in radiative decays of the Upsilon(1S). No significant signal is found, and upper limits on the product branching ratios are set. Our tau+tau- results are almost 2 orders of magnitude more stringent than previous upper limits. Our data provide no evidence for a Higgs state with a mass of 214 MeV decaying to µ+µ-, previously proposed as an explanation for 3 Sigma+-->pµ+µ- events observed by the HyperCP experiment. Our results constrain NMSSM models.

Using a total of 2.74×107 decays of the psi(2S) collected with the CLEO-c detector, we present a study of chicJ-->gammaV, where V=rho0, omega, phi. The transitions chic1-->gammarho0 and chic1-->gammaomega are observed with [script B](chic1-->gammarho0)=(2.43±0.19±0.22)×10-4 and [script B](chic1-->gammaomega)=(8.3±1.5±1.2)×10-5. In the chic1-->gammarho0 transition, the final state meson is dominantly longitudinally polarized. Upper limits on the branching fractions of other chicJ states to light vector mesons are presented.

Objectives: To develop new methods for studying correlations between the performance and outcome of resuscitation efforts in real-world clinical settings using data recorded by automatic devices such as automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), and to explore effects of shock timing and chest compression depth in the field. Methods: In 695 records of AED use in the pre-hospital setting, continuous compression data were recorded using AEDs capable of measuring sternal motion during compressions, together with timing of delivered shocks and the electrocardiogram. In patients who received at least one shock, putative return of spontaneous circulation (P-ROSC) was defined as a regular, narrow …

We have studied the effects of a disordered optical potential on the transport and phase coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of Li-7 atoms. At moderate disorder strengths (V-D), we observe inhibited transport and damping of dipole excitations, while in time-of-flight images, random but reproducible interference patterns are observed. In situ images reveal that the appearance of interference is correlated with density modulation, without complete fragmentation. At higher V-D, the interference contrast diminishes as the BEC fragments into multiple pieces with little phase coherence.
