The Antioxidant Activity Of Some Medicinal Plants, Prateek Kumar Jain, Veerasamy Ravichandran, Simant Sharma, Ram. K. Agrawal

Turkish Journal of Biology

The antioxidant properties of the methanol extracts of 10 medicinal plants were evaluated with the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl) test, hydroxyl scavenging test, and lipid peroxidation assay. The methanol extract of Emblica officinalis was the most active according to the DPPH test, with an IC_{50} value of 7.92 ± 0.1 \mug/ml, followed by Asparagus racemosus, with an IC_{50} value of 9.28 ± 0.2 \mug/ml. The minimum free radical scavenging activity was shown by Zingiber officinale, with an IC_{50} value of 44.48 ± 1.8 \mug/ml. The hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of the methanolic extracts of various plants was as follows: Asparagus racemosus …

Antioxidant And Vasorelaxant Activities Of Flavonoids From Amygdalus Lycioides Var. Horrida, Hossein Babaei, Omid Sadeghpour, Lutfun Nahar, Abbas Delazar, Hossein Nazemiyeh, Mohammad Reza Mansouri, Naser Poursaeid, Solmaz Asnaashari, Sedigheh Bamdad Moghadam, Satyajit Dey Sarker

Turkish Journal of Biology

Amygdalus lycioides var. horrida (Spach) Browicz (Rosaceae), also known as Prunus lycioides (Spach.) Schneid., is an endemic Iranian species of the genus Amygdalus. In Iranian traditional medicine, the aerial parts and roots of A. lycioides are used in the treatment of diabetes. Six flavonoids, i.e. quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside (1), luteolin 7-O-rhamnoside (2), isorhamnetin 3-O-rutinoside (3), kaempferol 3-O-rhamnoside (4), apigenin (5), and naringenin (6), have been isolated from the aerial parts of this plant. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by UV, MS, and NMR spectroscopic data analyses. While the antioxidant activity of these compounds was assessed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) …

Specific Individuals Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Are Able To Show Time-Place Learning, M. Saeed Heydarnejad, G. J. Purser

Turkish Journal of Biology

Using demand-feeders, time-place learning association of food was investigated in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in 2 small raceways (TR1 and TR2). In order for the fish to be visually identified, they were tagged individually and their behaviour and distribution were monitored by cameras. Equipping with a demand-feeder, TR1 was assigned to test 2 times/1 place (2T/1P) while 2 demand-feeders were used in TR2 assigned to test 2 times/2 places (2T/2P). After 26 days of restricted feeding (RF) the fish were deprived of food for 3 days. The results of the present study indicate that, at the group level, rainbow trout …

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment: Tradeoffs Between Food Security And The Environment, Claudia Ringler Jan 2008

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment: Tradeoffs Between Food Security And The Environment, Claudia Ringler

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This paper provides an overview of selected trends and conditions of ecosystem services, in particular, food production and impacts on the environment based on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. It then describes outcomes for future ecosystem services under alternative development pathways, with a focus on tradeoffs between food security and the environment, such as implications for fertilizer use, and the role of biofuels. As tradeoffs among various ecosystem services are expected to increase into the future, research will need to focus increasingly on ways to achieve a balance between food security and improving non-food ecosystem services. To reduce adverse future impacts, …

The Life History And Ecology Of Riverine Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) In A Large Floodplain River, Tyler Huntley Tappenbeck Jan 2008

The Life History And Ecology Of Riverine Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) In A Large Floodplain River, Tyler Huntley Tappenbeck

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The productivity and life history diversity of salmonids is linked to the complexity of habitat in large floodplain rivers. Dynamic floodplain processes are driven by flow, sediment transport, cut and fill alluviation, woody plant succession, and ecosystem engineers, notably beavers, that create dynamic and biophysically complex off-channel rearing and spawning habitats. Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) display some of the most variable life history traits of all Pacific salmon, using lake and river rearing strategies throughout rivers of the northern Pacific Rim. However, sockeye management has primarily focused on the lake-type life history with minimal regard to the importance of the …

Students within these classrooms ranging in grades 5 - 12, took two assessments, …

Into The Den Of Evils: The Genizaros In Colonial New Mexico, Doris Swann Avery Jan 2008

Into The Den Of Evils: The Genizaros In Colonial New Mexico, Doris Swann Avery

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As a result of the Indian slave trade in the American Southwest, a group of detribalized Indians emerged in New Mexico during the Spanish colonial period. These Indians came to be known as the genízaros and, through the process scholars call ethnogenesis, developed their own identity by incorporating Hispano-Christian cultural practices while preserving their native ways. The genízaros were products of a widespread and lucrative trade in Plains Indian captives and, as such, they represented various tribes, including Apaches, Navajos, Comanches, Kiowas, Pawnees, Utes and Wichitas. The term “genízaro” emerged as a caste label during the Spanish colonial period and …

An Evaluation Of Visitor Decisions Regarding Alternative Transportation In Glacier National Park, Melissa Lynn Baker Jan 2008

An Evaluation Of Visitor Decisions Regarding Alternative Transportation In Glacier National Park, Melissa Lynn Baker

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In 2007, Glacier National Park implemented a free, voluntary shuttle bus system along the Going to the Sun Road. The first year of implementation of the transit system at Glacier National Park presented a unique opportunity to evaluate visitor behavior in national parks. One way that transportation mode choice has been understood is through the theory of planned behavior, which characterizes social behavior as the result of conscious, deliberate thought processes directly related to the behavior in question. This study examined the intersection of national park visitors' recreation experience preference and their decisions toward shuttle use in a national park. …

Photo Identity Crisis: Creating A Classification And Organization Method, Heidi Blackburn, Pam Bower, Alysia Starkey

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Institutional archives have always provided a sense of history and unity for most universities. This is especially emphasized for the Kansas State University at Salina photographic collection. The school has gone through four different name changes in the last fifty years and the library has amassed an overwhelming assortment of photographs documenting various events on campus, from groundbreaking ceremonies to student social occasions. With an estimated total of over 11,000 unlabeled photographs, the K-State at Salina librarians have worked hard to begin the process of providing the university community with a useful resource for historical research in the future.
