Background: Nearly 1300 cases of leishmaniasis have been identified in American military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The symptoms of this disease can range from a mild, self-limiting cutaneous infection to a deadly visceral infection and are not prevented by chemoprophylaxis or immunization. Effective treatments, however, are available. The disease-causing parasite is spread through the bite of the female sand fly. Although the disease occurs in both the Old World and the New World, the parasite species differ between the hemispheres. The large number of cases in military veterans has caused some concern that Old World, temperate-adapted parasite species …

As of the 2009-10 academic year, high school students in Arkansas will be required to pass so called “End of Course” (or “EOC”) examinations in Algebra I, Biology, Geometry, and English. Students who fail to meet the requisite passing standard will be required to retake the class or to pass “an appropriate alternative exit course in order to receive credit for the course on his or her transcript and in order to graduate.” In other words, these four EOC tests will become high school exit exams. Over the past three years (2006-2008), the medical/health and public health communities have shown a growing interest in using online 3D virtual worlds like Second Life® (http://secondlife.com/) for health education, community outreach, training and simulations purposes. 3D virtual worlds are seen as the precursors of ‘Web 3D’, the next major iteration of the Internet that will follow in the coming years. Theses and Graduate Projects

The process of creating art is considered to be a therapeutic method for students with emotional behavioral disorders (E/BD) to non-verbally express their thoughts and feelings. It has also been used by therapists and at times collaboratively with special education teachers to assess thoughts, feelings and also state of mind. Research suggests that art assessment offers an uncensored view of a child's thoughts and feelings and is a nonverbal method of assessment for children who are still developing language skills or who are unwilling to verbalize their feelings or emotions (White, Wallace, Huffman, 2004).
