Comparison Of Post-Newtonian And Numerical Evolutions Of Black-Hole Binaries, Hiroyuki Nakano, Manuela Campanelli, Carlos Lousto, Yosef Zlochower
Presentations and other scholarship
In this paper, we compare the waveforms from the post-Newtonian (PN) approach with the numerical simulations of generic black-hole binaries which have mass ratio q 0.8, arbitrarily oriented spins with magnitudes S1/m2 1 0.6 and S2/m2 2 0.4, and orbit 9 times from an initial orbital separation of r 11M prior to merger. We observe a reasonably good agreement between the PN and numerical waveforms, with an overlap of over 98% for the first six cycles of the (ℓ = 2,m = ±2) mode and over 90% for the (ℓ = 2,m = 1) and (ℓ = 3,m = 3) …

Testing Gravitational-Wave Searches With Numerical Relativity Waveforms: Results From The First Numerical Injection Analysis (Ninja) Project, Hiroyuki Nakano, Manuela Campanelli, Carlos Lousto, Yosef Zlochower
Presentations and other scholarship
The Numerical INJection Analysis (NINJA) project is a collaborative effort between members of the numerical relativity and gravitational-wave data analysis communities. The purpose of NINJA is to study the sensitivity of existing gravitational-wave search algorithms using numerically generated waveforms and to foster closer collaboration between the numerical relativity and data analysis communities. We describe the results of the first NINJA analysis which focused on gravitational waveforms from binary black hole coalescence. Ten numerical relativity groups contributed numerical data which were used to generate a set of gravitational-wave signals. These signals were injected into a simulated data set, designed to mimic …

An Assessment Of Scales Measuring Constructs In Tests Of Criminological Theory Based On National Youth Survey Data, Todd A. Armstrong, Daniel R. Lee, Gaylene Armstrong
An Assessment Of Scales Measuring Constructs In Tests Of Criminological Theory Based On National Youth Survey Data, Todd A. Armstrong, Daniel R. Lee, Gaylene Armstrong
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Researchers have utilized the National Youth Survey (NYS) data to test a variety of theoretical explanations of criminal behavior. Here, the authors offer an assessment of scales used in tests of criminological theory based on NYS data. The authors conducted this assessment to provide results informing future tests of theory. Their analyses focus on understanding the extent to which scales representative of different theories are actually based on the same item content. They test for two distinct processes that may explain this phenomenon. In the first process, scales measuring a given construct are attributed to different theories. In the second …

Development Of The High Altitude Student Platform, T. G. Guzik, S. Besse, A. Calongne, A. Dominique, S. B. Ellison, R. Gould, D. Granger, D. Olano, D. Smith, M. Stewart, J. P. Wefel
Faculty Publications
The High Altitude Student Platform (HASP) was originally conceived to provide student groups with access to the near-space environment for flight durations and experiment capabilities intermediate between what is possible with small sounding balloons and low Earth orbit rocket launches. HASP is designed to carry up to twelve student payloads to an altitude of about 36 km with flight durations of 15-20 h using a small zero-pressure polyethylene film balloon. This provides a flight capability that can be used to flight-test compact satellites, prototypes and other small payloads designed and built by students. HASP includes a standard mechanical, power and …

Anthropogenically-derived increases in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations have been implicated in recent climate change, and are projected to substantially impact the climate on a global scale in the future. For marine and freshwater systems, increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases are expected to increase surface temperatures, lower pH, and cause changes to vertical mixing, upwelling, precipitation, and evaporation patterns. The potential consequences of these changes for harmful algal blooms (HABs) have received relatively little attention and are not well understood. Given the apparent increase in HABs around the world and the potential for greater problems as a result of climate change …
Connecting A Disjointed System: A First Look At Aligning Education In Alaska, G. Williamson Mcdiarmid, Alexandra Hill
Connecting A Disjointed System: A First Look At Aligning Education In Alaska, G. Williamson Mcdiarmid, Alexandra Hill
ISER Reports
We’ve heard it before, but it’s still true: too many Alaska students don’t have the skills they need to move on to the next stage of education or to get good jobs. Too many drop out of high school, and too few of those who graduate go on to college or other post-secondary education—and among those who do go on to post-secondary education, many don’t graduate within four or even six years. Employers report that young people entering the work world directly after they graduate from high school (or right after they drop out) don’t have the reading, writing, and …
