Acknowledging Morality In Methodology, Rachelle Erika Howard
Acknowledging Morality In Methodology, Rachelle Erika Howard
Theses and Dissertations
Marriage and family research has its foundation in the positivist tradition, which dismisses the relevance of morality to the scientific enterprise. Yet morality is inherent in marriage and family studies—both in the topics studied and in methodology. In this conceptual research, positivist assumptions are explicated to show that positivist methodology relies on a stance of moral neutrality that turns out to be a hidden morality. This hidden morality requires that people be studied as other objects. The need for a methodology that has an explicit moral philosophy and that acknowledges that humans are not “things” is discussed. Levinas' relational philosophy …
Testing Comparative Phylogeographic Models Of Marine Vicariance And Dispersal Using A Hierarchical Bayesian Approach, Michael J. Hickerson, Christopher P. Meyer
Testing Comparative Phylogeographic Models Of Marine Vicariance And Dispersal Using A Hierarchical Bayesian Approach, Michael J. Hickerson, Christopher P. Meyer
Publications and Research
Background Marine allopatric speciation is an enigma because pelagic larval dispersal can potentially connect disjunct populations thereby preventing reproductive and morphological divergence. Here we present a new hierarchical approximate Bayesian computation model (HABC) that tests two hypotheses of marine allopatric speciation: 1.) "soft vicariance", where a speciation involves fragmentation of a large widespread ancestral species range that was previously connected by long distance gene flow; and 2.) peripatric colonization, where speciations in peripheral archipelagos emerge from sweepstakes colonizations from central source regions. The HABC approach analyzes all the phylogeographic datasets at once in order to make across taxon-pair inferences about …

Transformation Optics: Approaching Broadband Electromagnetic Cloaking, Alexander V. Kildishev, W Cai, U K. Chettiar, V. M. Shalaev
Birck and NCN Publications
An approach to broadband cloaking of light waves is analysed for a simplified case of a scaling transformation for a general cylindrical coordinate system. The proposed approach requires metamaterials with specifically engineered dispersion. The restriction on the signs of gradients in the dispersion dependencies of the dielectric permittivity and the magnetic permeability for different operational wavelengths is revealed and is shown to cause difficulties unless additional gain-assisted compensation for losses or electromagnetically induced transparency is introduced in the cloaking system.

Incorporating Spatial Data And Gis To Improve Sea Of Land Use Plans: Opportunities And Limitations: Case Studies In The Republic Of Ireland, Ainhoa Gonzalez Del Campo
Incorporating Spatial Data And Gis To Improve Sea Of Land Use Plans: Opportunities And Limitations: Case Studies In The Republic Of Ireland, Ainhoa Gonzalez Del Campo
Doctoral
This research aimed at establishing whether spatial data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can contribute to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). To achieve this, an integrated GISEA approach was developed and applied to a number of spatial planning SEAs in the Republic of Ireland. The practical applicability of the approach was examined, evaluating the potential benefits derived from using spatial data and GIS in SEA and assessing the potential barriers to an effective GIS use. The implementation of the SEA Directive incorporated a new dimension into plan-making by calling for the assessment of potential environmental effects that may derive from implementing …

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education
The guiding theme that has given impetus to the federal government’s continued involvement in issues of accreditation has been that the government has sought to increase its control of higher education through accreditation. As Pedersen (2005) surmises, “…the federal government has chosen to use theregional associations as a "Trojan horse" to exert greater influence onaccreditation.” However, if representatives of Department of Education areasked, they will claim that the department has been motivated by an honestdesire to ensure that the public is not misled by false claims of quality and valuemade by colleges and universities. On the contrary, most colleges anduniversities …

In Case You Missed It: Three Faces Of Chinese Power, Eric Setzekorn
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
David Lampton, a distinguished professor of international relations at SAIS, knows this is a great time to publish a book on Chinese power. As a new administration, which he may play a role in, attempts to craft a balanced and articulate China policy, his newest effort, The Three Faces of Chinese Power; Might, Money and Minds, will be influential and widely read. The book is a comprehensive and largely successful attempt to grasp the motivation, intent and challenges for Chinese international relations as China becomes a global leader and East Asia the center of world economic, political and military power. …
