Ideal Female And Male Bodies: An Analysis Of College Students' Drawings, Shannon K. Carter, Michelle M. Ortiz Dec 2008

Ideal Female And Male Bodies: An Analysis Of College Students' Drawings, Shannon K. Carter, Michelle M. Ortiz

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

This study investigates perceptions of gendered body ideals through an analysis of college students' drawings. A sample of 94 college students participated by drawing their image of the ideal female and male bodies. The drawings were analyzed through a gender lens, whereby each participant‟s male and female bodies were compared to determine the features participants used to indicate gender in their ideal bodies. Four major themes emerged that distinguished ideal female and male bodies from each other: (1) body shape, (2) body size, (3) clothing and accessories, and (4) gender roles. An additional theme includes a small group of participants …

A Membrane-Type Humidifier For Fuel Cell Applications: Controller Design, Analysis And Implementation, Denise A. Mckay, Anna G. Stefanopoulou, Jeffrey Cook Dec 2008

A Membrane-Type Humidifier For Fuel Cell Applications: Controller Design, Analysis And Implementation, Denise A. Mckay, Anna G. Stefanopoulou, Jeffrey Cook

Engineering: Faculty Publications

A membrane-based gas humidification apparatus was employed to actively manage the water vapor entrained in the reactant gas supplied to a fuel cell stack. The humidification system utilizes a gas bypass and a series of heaters to achieve accurate and fast humidity and temperature control. A change in fuel cell load induces a reactant mass flow rate disturbance to this humidification system. If not well regulated, this disturbance creates undesirable condensation and evaporation dynamics, both to the humidification system and the fuel cell stack. Therefore, controllers were devised, tuned and employed for temperature reference tracking and disturbance rejection. The coordination …

Bridging The Great Divide - Moving From Outsider To Insider: How For Profit Executives Become Effective Nonprofit Ceos, Antoinette E. La Belle Dec 2008

Bridging The Great Divide - Moving From Outsider To Insider: How For Profit Executives Become Effective Nonprofit Ceos, Antoinette E. La Belle

Student Scholarship

A leadership crisis in the nonprofit sector is portended by sector growth, turnover at the top and a smaller cohort of leaders coming up from behind. Crossovers from the corporate sector present an alternative source of CEO talent, but a dearth of empirical research about top executives who cross the boundaries of sector, organization, and, at times role, stymies our understanding of the transition process of for-profit to non-profit leaders. In depth interviews with U.S. nonprofit leaders--both crossover CEOs and CEOs hired from within the nonprofit sector--compared and contrasted transition experiences. Rather than significant differences between the two groups, our …

Constructing A Definition Of And Portfolio Model Of Family Business Success, John E. Neff Dec 2008

Constructing A Definition Of And Portfolio Model Of Family Business Success, John E. Neff

Student Scholarship

Our qualitative study sought to understand the meaning of success within the context of the family owned firm. The study, designed to identify success factors that distinguished more successful firms from less successful firms, revealed four significant and three moderate differentiators. Significant among the findings was the role of trust not only within the owning family but also between the family and non-family members of the firm. Implications of the study suggest it may be possible to construct a multi-attribute model of family firm success.

A Cell Biology Laboratory Exercise To Study Sub-Cellular Organelles In Drosophila, Meghana Tare, Amit Singh Dec 2008

A Cell Biology Laboratory Exercise To Study Sub-Cellular Organelles In Drosophila, Meghana Tare, Amit Singh

Biology Faculty Publications

The fast-changing scenario of undergraduate education puts emphasis on introducing students to hands-on techniques as part of their laboratory courses. In order to cater to large numbers of students and the time constraints involved with undergraduate level laboratory courses, there is a need for development of experiments that are cost effective and can be completed in a defined time frame. We have devised a laboratory exercise for teaching cell biology using the Drosophila melanogaster model. Drosophila can be reared in a short period of time in a cost effective manner. We used Drosophila tissue to study the sub-cellular organization of …

Evaluation Of Methods For Establishing Vegetation In Created Wetland Mitigation Sites In Eastern Nebraska, Andrew A. Miller Dec 2008

Evaluation Of Methods For Establishing Vegetation In Created Wetland Mitigation Sites In Eastern Nebraska, Andrew A. Miller

Student Work

Seventeen wetland mitigation sites in eastern Nebraska were evaluated, by vegetative zone, to assess the relative success of active and passive wetland vegetation establishment techniques. For sites with available records of species introduced, 46% of the seeded species and 31% of the transplanted species were successfully established suggesting that the intentional introduction of species (i.e. active methods) provides some degree of success in wetland creation. No significant differences were observed within or among active or passive methods for Species Richness (S), Shannon-Wiener diversity (H′), or the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) (Kruskall-Wallis test P < 0.05). However, while not statistically significant, general trends showed that, in the temporarily flooded zones, seeding resulted in both the highest overall plant diversity and highest FQI (S = 20.2, H′ = 1.74, FQI = 8.99) and, among species with cover values > 0.5%, the lowest percent non-native species (6.2%). …

The Effect Of A Yearlong One -To -One Laptop Computer Classroom Program On The 4th-Grade Achievement And Technology Outcomes Of Digital Divide Learners, Daniel H. Bird

Student Work

A yearlong one-to-one computer laptop classroom instruction intervention program used to prepare 4th-grade students for participation in computer learning activities was evaluated. Students used computers to complete daily reading, writing, and Internet search assignments. Students were divided into two groups according to past computer access; Digital Divide Learners (n = 10) who did not have computers and Internet access at home, and Digital Native Learners (n = 15) who did have computers and Internet access at home. Reading, writing, total technology skills domain scores, and keyboarding speed and accuracy outcomes were evaluated. Results indicate reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing …

Food Resources Of Carnaby’S Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus Latirostris) In The Gnangara Sustainability Strategy Study Area, Leonie E. Valentine, William Stock

Research outputs pre 2011

Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo is an endangered species, with less than 50% of the original population remaining (Garnett and Crowley 2000). A major threatening process includes habitat fragmentation and the removal of critical feeding resources (Cale 2003). The GSS study area in an important foraging area during the non-breeding season for Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo. Both native banksia woodlands and pine plantations have been recognised as an important food resource (Perry 1948; Saunders 1974b; Saunders 1980). Expanding urban populations and agricultural development has resulted in the removal of approximately 50% of native vegetation in the GSS study area. Within the remnant vegetation, the energetics, …

Component Materiality For Group Audits, Steven M. Glover, Jonathan T. Liljegren, Douglas F. Prawitt, William F. Messier

Faculty Publications

Determining overall group materiality and materiality levels for individual components is becoming more of a hot-button issue as the number and complexity of large and international group audits increases. Auditing standards and other professional materials offer little practical guidance on the topic. Internal and peer reviews and regulatory inspections have revealed a variety of approaches in this area. In some instances, reviews have discovered potentially troubling practices. Our conversations with regulators and practitioners indicate an intense and growing interest in the development of conceptually sound guidance. This article outlines a practical approach that group engagement partners can consider in establishing …
