Evaluation Of Competition Between Turfgrass And Trees In The Landscape, Christopher A. Hendrickson Dec 2008

Evaluation Of Competition Between Turfgrass And Trees In The Landscape, Christopher A. Hendrickson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Population growth in regions of the Intermountain West has resulted in rapid growth of residential neighborhoods. In Utah, the landscapes associated with these expanding neighborhoods consume vast quantities of treated water. This is a concern in all states of the Intermountain West, as water becomes increasingly scarce. Traditionally used turfgrasses, trees and other plants in Intermountain West landscapes require significant amounts of supplemental water considering the intense sunlight, dry winds and sparse rainfall typical of the region. Characterizing the interactions between turfgrass and tree species in these landscapes can aid in the identification of candidate species that consume less nutritional …

A Novel Technique Of Network Auditability With Managers In The Loop, Rian Shelley Dec 2008

A Novel Technique Of Network Auditability With Managers In The Loop, Rian Shelley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Network management requires a large amount of knowledge about the network. In particular, knowledge about used network addresses, access time, and topology is useful. In a network composed of managed devices, much of the data necessary can come from simple network management protocol (SNMP) queries. Other data can come from other databases, or analysis of existing data. In particular, layer-two network topology can be determined by analyzing the mac address forwarding tables of layer-two devices. The layer-two topology can be merged with a layer-three topology to generate a complete topology of the network. This information is useless unless it is …

Farm-Level Contracting For Production Process Attributes: An Analysis Of Rbst In Milk Production, Clayton Cook-Mowery, Nicole J. Olynk, Christopher A. Wolf

Journal of Food Law & Policy

On November 5, 1993, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rBST), also JOURNAL OF FOOD LAW & POLICY called Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rbGH), for commercial use to increase milk production in dairy cattle. The FDA determined that milk from cows which have been treated with rBST was safe for human consumption and that there was no significant impact on the environment from the production and use of rBST. In February 1994 the Monsanto Corporation (Monsanto) introduced POSILACO bovine somatotropin, making rBST commercially available to United States dairy farmers.

The analysis examined studies undertaken at both the elementary and secondary school level. The results indicate that both Catholic and Protestant school students do better than their counterparts in public schools. In addition, Protestant school students excelled more than their Catholic counterparts on most standardized tests, but Catholic school students did better than their Protestant school counterparts on non-standardized measures. The significance of these results is discussed.

Nurturing Spirituality And Vocation: A Catholic Approach To New Teacher Induction, Richard Shields Dec 2008

Nurturing Spirituality And Vocation: A Catholic Approach To New Teacher Induction, Richard Shields

Journal of Catholic Education

The Catholic school system in Ontario, Canada, is fully funded by the government. Recently Ontario’s Ministry of Education mandated an induction year, the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP), for all new teachers. This legislation provides an opportunity for Catholic school boards to take the lead and shape creative and effective programs for new teacher induction. The mission of the Catholic school and the vocation of a Catholic teacher give meaning and direction to the new teacher’s professional educational practice. This article first explores some of the pastoral theological concerns that those charged with developing a Catholic approach to NTIP need …

An Introduction To Value-Added Analysis, Ron Costello, Peggy Elson, John Schacter Dec 2008

An Introduction To Value-Added Analysis, Ron Costello, Peggy Elson, John Schacter

Journal of Catholic Education

For the last 3 years, more than 80% of the respondents to Annual Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward The Public Schools have stated that they would rather see a school’s performance measure based upon “improvement shown by students” than the “percentage passing the test” (Rose & Gallip, 2007, p. 35). If this were to become the norm, the next question would be what “improvement” is significant? Educators need to understand “value-added” if they are going to use “improvement” to show that schools are improving student achievement.

Biochemical Characterization Of Two Yeast Paralogous Proteins Mth1 And Std1, Satish Pasula Dec 2008

Biochemical Characterization Of Two Yeast Paralogous Proteins Mth1 And Std1, Satish Pasula

Dissertations

Glucose is the most abundant monosaccharide and preferred carbon and energy source for most cells. Many organisms have evolved sophisticated means to sense glucose and respond to it appropriately. The budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae senses glucose through two transmembrane proteins, Snf3 and Rgt2. In the presence of extracellular glucose Snf3 and Rgt2 generate an intracellular signal that leads to the degradation of Mthl and Stdl, thereby inducing the expression of hexose transporter genes (EXT) by inhibiting the function of Rgtl, a transcriptional repressor of HXT genes. Mthl and Stdl are degraded via the Yckl/2 Kinase-SCFGrrl-26S proteasome pathway triggered by the …

A Comparison Of Reading Interventions Based On Preference To Reading Interventions Identified By Brief Experimental Analysis, Debborah Eda Smyth Dec 2008

A Comparison Of Reading Interventions Based On Preference To Reading Interventions Identified By Brief Experimental Analysis, Debborah Eda Smyth

Dissertations

The available literature on children's acceptability of interventions is rather sparse and offers little support for the link between acceptability and effectiveness (e.g., Foxx & Jones, 1978; Shapiro & Goldberg, 1986; Turco & Elliot, 1990). The present study compared the effects of treatment preference to treatment effectiveness using a brief experimental analysis to select skill-based oral reading fluency interventions. The use of a brief experimental analysis (BEA) (Daly, Martens, Hamler, Dool, & Eckert, 1999) has been demonstrated to be an effective procedure for selecting oral reading interventions. However, the studies on brief experimental analysis to date have not examined student …

Transforming Inmate Character Within A Correctional Setting By Experiencing Spiritual Formation Through The Conventional Relationship With God, Ron D. Borden Dec 2008

Transforming Inmate Character Within A Correctional Setting By Experiencing Spiritual Formation Through The Conventional Relationship With God, Ron D. Borden

Doctor of Ministry

Historically, the correctional system was concerned with locking up criminals and keeping them off the streets. Society's safety was, and still is, of primary importance. Unfortunately, most felons complete their sentencing and are released back into the community with the same belief systems and character traits that brought them to prison. Christian programming within the correctional setting is succeeding only at changing surface behavior, not genuine character transformation. This results in recidivism rates that are identical to those of non-Christian imnates. In order to address this problem, I propose that spiritual formation focused upon a covenantal relationship with Jesus Christ …

Supervising Cross-Border Banks: Matters Arising., Kim Norris Dec 2008

Supervising Cross-Border Banks: Matters Arising., Kim Norris

Economic and Financial Review

An essential element of banking supervision is that supervisors supervise their banking groups on a consolidated basis, adequately monitoring and, as appropriate, applying prudential norms to all aspects of the business conducted by each group worldwide. This paper examines supervision of banking groups on a consolidated basis which goes beyond accounting consolidation. It simply implies that there is a group-wide approach to supervision whereby all risks taken on by each banking group are taken into account wherever they are booked (i.e. in the bank or in a subsidiary; in Nigeria or elsewhere).

How Relevant Is Risk-Based Supervision For Pension Funds: The Regulators Perspective., Musa A. Ibrahim Dec 2008

How Relevant Is Risk-Based Supervision For Pension Funds: The Regulators Perspective., Musa A. Ibrahim

Economic and Financial Review

Over the past two decades, privately managed pension systems have expanded greatly to play a central role in the provision of retirement income worldwide. The design and operation of these systems vary extensively, but the basic reason for their adoption remains unique across the board: countries need to provide affordable and sustainable income for their retired citizens. Achieving this objective becomes a challenging task in the face of the uncertainties created by globalization and rapid integration of financial markets. The utilization of risk-based methods originates primarily in the supervision of banks. In recent years, it has increasingly been extended to …

The Challenges Of Good Corporate Governance For Effective Risk-Based Banking Supervision., Chris C. Itsede Dec 2008

The Challenges Of Good Corporate Governance For Effective Risk-Based Banking Supervision., Chris C. Itsede

Economic and Financial Review

Corporate governance has changed tremendously over the past two decades. These changes have been driven by new laws, regulations, guidelines and rising investor and public expectations. In the past, many boards were under the thumb of their chief executive officers (CEOs); this is no longer the case. Today, boards generally strive to govern their companies by benchmarking a set of best practices which have emerged and codified in corporate governance laws, stock exchange listing rules and company annual reports. Many individual directors are willing to accept these additional responsibilities. In this paper, the importance and principles of Corporate Governance is …

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Runoff generated from high elevations is the primary source of freshwater for western North America, yet this critical resource is managed on the basis of short instrumental records that capture an insufficient range of climatic conditions. Here we probe the effects of climate change over the past ~1000 years on river discharge in the upper Mackenzie River system based on paleoenvironmental information from the Peace-Athabasca Delta. The delta landscape responds to hydroclimatic changes with marked variability, while Lake Athabasca level appears to directly monitor overall water availability. The latter fluctuated systematically over the past millennium, with the highest levels occurring …
