Pluriformity In Pauline Thought Regarding Financial Support From The Christian Communities At Thessalonica And Corinth: A Reflection, Jonathan Schott Dec 2008

Pluriformity In Pauline Thought Regarding Financial Support From The Christian Communities At Thessalonica And Corinth: A Reflection, Jonathan Schott

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"There are many issues, sociological, theological, and anthropological that surfaced in Paul’s compositions to the early Christian communities. Frequently, Paul expressed pluriformity in the discussion of those issues. In other words, Paul often varied his meaning in speaking about a particular issue."

A Scholar Divided, A Life Replete, Barbara Lowe

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"You are three. The echoes of splashing water and the melody of child-father play reach me from down the hall. The bedtime routine begins. I am writing, absorbed (mostly) in my work, finding inspiration in the insights that come from reflections on the day, a day spent engaged in the mundane but rich experience of taking care of you, playing with you, meeting your every need. Your laughs and giggles and statements of child wisdom offer background music to my writing."

Jesus And The Children In The Gospels, Maryana Misula Dec 2008

Jesus And The Children In The Gospels, Maryana Misula

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"A mother lovingly watches her 3 year old play in the warm sand of the beach. She becomes absorbed in her daughter's pure enjoyment of the sunshine, her simple understanding of the world around her, and her utmost delight in the sand flowing between her fingers and toes. She wonders how she could become more like her little child, careless and free. I have also pondered the virtue of being child-like, and have thought about the words of Jesus regarding children. There are several portions of Scripture in the …

Pyrosequencing Analysis Of The Trichodiene Synthase 5 (Tri 5) Gene From The Members Of The Genus Stachybotrys, Tineace Taylor Farrow Dec 2008

Pyrosequencing Analysis Of The Trichodiene Synthase 5 (Tri 5) Gene From The Members Of The Genus Stachybotrys, Tineace Taylor Farrow

Theses (Pre-2016)

This research will focus on multiple isolates of Stachybotrys species from culture collection companies which will be studied in an attempt to determine the presence of the Trichodiene synthase 5 (Tri5) gene, an enzyme involved in the early stages of the biosynthesis of trichothecenes. Using general primers, the Tri5 gene will be amplified by customized PCR technique. The amplicons will be sequenced using a new multiple sequence technique personally designed. Stachybotrys is a genus of filamentous fungi belonging to the class of anamorphic ascomycetes (Kirk et al, 2001). The genus has a single well-known species, Stachybotrys chartarum. S. chartarum was …

Breaking Protocol: The Failure Of The Bush Administration To Ratify The Kyoto Protocol As A State Crime, Jacquelynn A. Doyon Dec 2008

Breaking Protocol: The Failure Of The Bush Administration To Ratify The Kyoto Protocol As A State Crime, Jacquelynn A. Doyon

Masters Theses

Using the Kyoto Protocol as a centrifugal focus point, this research conceptualizes the failure of the United States to act on global warming as a state crime. The decision of the United States not to ratify the protocol was largely based on economic justifications. However, the actions taken following the Kyoto Protocol indicate that the US government was instead dedicated more to their own economical interests, rather than those of the state was a whole. Through the exploration of possible economic and political motivations, the research identifies ulterior motives of the Bush administration that have proved to be detrimental to …

Single Muslim Young Adults: Negotiating Identities, Religion And Desire, Zarinah El-Amin Naeem Dec 2008

Single Muslim Young Adults: Negotiating Identities, Religion And Desire, Zarinah El-Amin Naeem

Masters Theses

This ethnographic thesis is an empirically rich, critical analysis of the singlehood of Muslim young adults. Based on interviews with 21 single Muslims aged 18-36, and participant observation of Muslim spaces, I demonstrate that while Islam and Muslim communities present "ideal" behaviors, Islam is not alone. Instead, like identity, the singlehood of American Muslims is created and recreated through dialectical relationships with several cultural "wombs" including religion, popular culture, family, and ethnicity. As Muslim young adults encounter these often contradictory ideologies, they accept and reject parts, and negotiate their identities, religion and desires - all while struggling to maintain a …

Thirty Years Of Fellowship: A Retrospective, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton Dec 2008

Thirty Years Of Fellowship: A Retrospective, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

2008 is an exciting year for the BCTS. The fact that we’ve survived as long as we have is nothing short of a miracle. In 1978 our organization included thirty-four members, thirty of whom were clerics. Several were graduate students trying to complete their PhD dissertations. Today, we are assistant, associate, and full professors, canon lawyers, and even bishops, although there are still a few graduate student associate members. Slightly more of us are lay members than clergy. We are theologians, historians, social scientists, natural scientists, classicists, philosophers, deans, liturgists, and campus ministers. Some of us are now the leading …

“Poor Fools, Nothing But Bellies” (Theo 26-27): Eating Imagery In Hesiod As Personification Of Oppression, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton Dec 2008

“Poor Fools, Nothing But Bellies” (Theo 26-27): Eating Imagery In Hesiod As Personification Of Oppression, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Delivered during the 1999 meeting at the University of Notre Dame, this paper discusses the symbolic power of food imagery, especially its use in the cultural construction of humanity and in the process of dehumanization of oppressed groups. Tracing the use of food and eating imagery to the early seventh century BCE Greek poet Hesiod, Flint-Hamilton demonstrates the importance of studying early Classical texts to help us better understand modern-day oppression and the legacy of slavery.
