Bilingual Publication Workshop 雙語出版工作坊

This bilingual student magazine is the result of the hard work, creativity and energy of the 62 students in this year's Publication Workshop, a course offered by the Department of Translation. This is a very hands-on, practical course in which students learn by doing. Each student must take responsibility, both as an individual and as part of a team, to ensure that the quality of the publication is high and that the entire production process goes smoothly and according to schedule, just like in a real-life professional setting. Every aspect of this publication - from writing, editing and design, to …

Male Adolescents Of Divorce: The Relationship With Their Noncustodial Father, Christine L. Kerr Dec 2008

Male Adolescents Of Divorce: The Relationship With Their Noncustodial Father, Christine L. Kerr

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the divorce rate in the United States began to rise dramatically in the 1970s, researchers have studied the impact of divorce on those involved. The research indicates that children whose parents divorce are more likely than children whose parents remain married to suffer from a lower level of well-being and are at greater risk for a myriad of ills including poorer school performance and increased behavior problems. While few researchers have focused on the impact of divorce on male adolescents specifically, studies of adolescent males in general indicate they are at risk for a variety of problems including poor …

The Ecological Importance Of Severe Wildfires: Some Like It Hot, Richard L. Hutto Dec 2008

The Ecological Importance Of Severe Wildfires: Some Like It Hot, Richard L. Hutto

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Many scientists and forest land managers concur that past fire suppression, grazing, and timber harvesting practices have created unnatural and unhealthy conditions in the dry, ponderosa pine forests of the western United States. Specifically, such forests are said to carry higher fuel loads and experience fires that are more severe than those that occurred historically. It remains unclear, however, how far these generalizations can be extrapolated in time and space, and how well they apply to the more mesic ponderosa pine systems and to other forest systems within the western United States. I use data on the pattern of distribution …

Metallicity Analysis Of Macho Galactic Bulge Rr0 Lyrae Stars From Their Light Curves, Andrea Kunder, Brian Chaboyer Dec 2008

Metallicity Analysis Of Macho Galactic Bulge Rr0 Lyrae Stars From Their Light Curves, Andrea Kunder, Brian Chaboyer

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present metallicities of 2690 RR0 Lyrae stars observed toward the MACHO Survey fields in the Galactic bulge. These [Fe/H] values are based upon an empirically-calibrated relationship that uses the Fourier coefficients of the light curve and are accurate to ±0.2 dex. The majority of the RR0 Lyrae stars in our sample are located in the Galactic bulge, but 255 RR0 stars are associated with the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy. We find that the RR0 Lyrae stars that belong to the Galactic bulge have average metallicities [Fe/H] = -1.25, with a broad metallicity range from [Fe/H] = -2.26 to -0.15. …

Output Measurement In Education, Andrew Dowling Dec 2008

Output Measurement In Education, Andrew Dowling

Program monitoring and evaluation

Governments can no longer justify their performance in education in terms of inputs; that is, in terms of the amount of new money they have provided, or the number of new teachers they have employed, or the range of new computers they have installed. It has been observed that ‘today, educators need to show how they have transformed current and new dollars into student achievement results, or the argument that education needs more - or even the current level of - money will be unlikely to attract public or political support’. Output measures, particularly those related to student achievement, are …

St. Ambrose And The Architecture Of The Churches Of Northern Italy : Ecclesiastical Architecture As A Function Of Liturgy., Sylvia Crenshaw Schneider 1948- Dec 2008

St. Ambrose And The Architecture Of The Churches Of Northern Italy : Ecclesiastical Architecture As A Function Of Liturgy., Sylvia Crenshaw Schneider 1948-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that the architecture of the churches of northern Italy that were constructed during the fifth and sixth centuries reflected the influence and vision of Ambrose, bishop of Milan (374-397), whose spiritual authority, theologically and liturgically, militantly extended the ecclesiastical authority of the see of Milan. In particular, this thesis demonstrates that the hegemony of the see of Milan in northern Italy was implemented in the architectural accommodation of the distinctive Ambrosian liturgy of Milan. To develop this argument, this thesis has adopted an integrated approach to the political and ecclesiastical history of northern Italy in the fourth …

The Use Of The Reducing Agent N-(2-Mercaptopropionyl)Glycine To Detoxify Oxidized Lipids In Atherosclerotic Lesions., Nason P. Schooler 1974-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The leading cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease, a result of atherosclerosis. The reducing agent N-(2-Mercaptopropionyl)glycine (MPG) as been found to be an effective antioxidant therapy in a number of conditions, and our hypothesis is that it will be an effective agent in the detoxification of oxidized lipids in atherosclerosis. Our results indicate some protective effect, along with some toxicity at high doses, with refinement of the experimental model necessary before results can be conclusive. Nevertheless, antioxidant and aldehyde-quenching agents in general have been shown to be of benefit in the detoxification of oxidized lipids, and …

Computing For The Masses: Extending The Computer Science Curriculum With Information Technology Literacy, Jorge Pérez, Meg C. Murray

Faculty Articles

Enrollments in computer science programs continue to drop as demand for workers skilled in computing increases. Information technology scholars face the ironic challenge of attracting more students into computing disciplines in the age of ubiquitous computing. This paper chronicles a decision by a department of computer science and information systems to offer an information technology literacy course as a service to its institution. Educational and curricular justifications for the course progressed in parallel with recognition of the course's strategic value to the department in the face of sharp declines in the number of students majoring in CS or IS. The Disappearing Cryosphere: Socioecological Consequences For Ecosystem Services, Long Term Ecological Research Network Dec 2008

The Disappearing Cryosphere: Socioecological Consequences For Ecosystem Services, Long Term Ecological Research Network

Long Term Ecological Research Network

An LTER Network Synthesis Prospectus.

The Earth's Cryosphere, which includes glaciers; sea, lake and river ice; seasonal snow; and ice-rich permafrost, harbors over 80% of the freshwater on the planet. The Cryosphere cools the planet, regulates global sea level, stores substantial stocks of carbon, insulates soil from subfreezing air temperatures, and, most importantly, serves as a seasonally-rectified water supply for human consumption, irrigation, nutrient transport and cycling, and waste disposal. Cryosphere loss imposes enormous threats to these ecosystem services, with potential costs to the world economy in the trillions of dollars. A one meter sea level rise, projected over the …

Identification And Characterization Of A Cadmium-Transporting P-Type Atpase In Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, David J. Adle Dec 2008

Identification And Characterization Of A Cadmium-Transporting P-Type Atpase In Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, David J. Adle

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Detoxification and homeostatic acquisition of metal ions are vital for all living organisms. Non-physiological heavy metals are toxic at low concentrations and represent major environmental hazards to human health. In particular, cadmium is a toxic environmental pollutant linked to a number of ailments including cancer, kidney and bone disease and reproductive disorders. The biological effects of cadmium toxicity which lead to human disease and the cellular mechanisms for cadmium defense are ill defined. Thus, the study of heavy metal detoxification systems represents an important research avenue to help combat cadmium related disorders.

The goal of this research project was to …

Bizarre Love Triangle: The Spending Clause, Section 1983, And Medicaid Entitlements, Nicole Huberfeld Dec 2008

Bizarre Love Triangle: The Spending Clause, Section 1983, And Medicaid Entitlements, Nicole Huberfeld

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The first two terms of the Roberts Court signal a willingness to revisit precedent, even decisions that have been considered long-settled, and the United States Supreme Court may be ready to reinterpret another area of jurisprudence: the private enforcement of conditions on federal spending against states through actions under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. The most recent pre-Roberts Court precedent is Gonzaga University v. Doe, a 2002 decision that made it more difficult for individuals harmed by violations of federal laws to enforce rights through § 1983 actions. Federal courts have inconsistently and confusingly applied the Gonzaga framework, but the …

Manipulation Of The Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus Envelope Protein In An Effort To Develop Directly And Indirectly Targeted Retroviral Vectors For Use In Human Gene Therapy, Geneva M. Vasser Dec 2008

Manipulation Of The Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus Envelope Protein In An Effort To Develop Directly And Indirectly Targeted Retroviral Vectors For Use In Human Gene Therapy, Geneva M. Vasser

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Highly effective, targeted therapies against cancer would revolutionize the way people recover from this devastating illness. Gone would be the lingering side effects of the current non-specific treatments and in their place would be faster recovery times, better quality of life both during and after treatment, and less ambiguity about whether or not treatment was effective. This concept will elude modern medicine until treatments can be tailored to the patient's individual and unique disease. This concept of a transient, targeted, and tailored vehicle aimed at cancer cells lends itself to the use of replication deficient retroviral gene therapy vectors with …

Nigerian Stock Market Reflection Of The Global Finance Crisis: An Evaluation, Sere- Ejembi A. A. Dec 2008

Nigerian Stock Market Reflection Of The Global Finance Crisis: An Evaluation, Sere- Ejembi A. A.

Bullion

With its roots in banking, the sub-prime mortgage crisis that commenced in the United States in 2007 soon resonated in other sectors of its financial system, and the economy, at large. It spread quickly to the developed economies in Europe, including the United Kingdom, and Asia. In the case of the Nigerian stock market, following initial relative insulation, the speed of contagion and response was comparatively slower. However, the effects began to manifest in the first quarter of 2008. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to review the global financial crisis, in the context of its recent effects on …

Investing Africa's External Reserves In Africa: Issues, Challenges And Prospects, Onwioduokit A. E.

Bullion

The paper underlined the challenges and opportunities for managing Africa's external reserves by Africans after identifying several pre-conditions for an African currency to emerge as international currency and noted that these conditions have not yet crystallized in Africa. Although African external reserves have grown over time the benefits of such growth in terms of facilitation of domestic financial markets and even the earning are not commensurate with the reserves growth rate. The non-convertibility of African currencies, volatile macroeconomic and sometimes volatile political environment coupled with the shallowness of the domestic markets are the main challenges that are faced by the …
