Simple Strategy-Based Technique To Reduce Emissions From Scr-Equipped Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Over Different Engine-Out Calibrations, Michelangelo Ardanese Dec 2008

Simple Strategy-Based Technique To Reduce Emissions From Scr-Equipped Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Over Different Engine-Out Calibrations, Michelangelo Ardanese

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers, regulators and operators in Europe and US have judged the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to be the most suitable exhaust aftertreatment technology to meet the Euro V and US 2010 emission standards for oxides of nitrogen (NOx). The choice of the SCR as the exhaust aftertreatment system has been accompanied by engine calibrations with higher engine-out NOx emissions. Temporary deactivation of the exhaust aftertreatment device, due to malfunction or disrepair could result in excessively high NOx emissions at the tailpipe. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate alternative engine calibrations that would limit in-use NOx …

A Parametric Study Of Microcellular Abs Foam Production In The Injection Molding Process, Adam Finniss Dec 2008

A Parametric Study Of Microcellular Abs Foam Production In The Injection Molding Process, Adam Finniss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Polymer foaming is an emerging technology with many possible benefits. In this work, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymer was studied, due to its excellent structural properties, such as impact and flexural/tensile properties. Much research has been undertaken in the field of foaming; however, little information is available with a system as complex as ABS polymer, due to its multi-phase nature. By injection molding ABS polymer along with chemical foaming agents (CFA), information about the effect of process and material variables on the resultant physical properties of the foams could be gained.;This research focused on the effect of parameters such as the mold …

Solution Of The Gribov Problem From Gauge Invariance, K Langfeld, T Heinzl, A Ilderton, M Lavelle, D Mcmullan Dec 2008

Solution Of The Gribov Problem From Gauge Invariance, K Langfeld, T Heinzl, A Ilderton, M Lavelle, D Mcmullan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A new approach to gauge fixed Yang-Mills theory is derived using the Polyakov-Susskind projection techniques to build gauge invariant states. In our approach, in contrast to the Faddeev-Popov method, the Gribov problem does not prevent the gauge group from being factored out of the partition function. Lattice gauge theory is used to illustrate the method via a calculation of the static quark-antiquark potential generated by the gauge fields in the fundamental modular region of Coulomb gauge.

Theoretical Dialectics Of The Relationship Between Collectivism And Cooperation In Organizational Theory, Saad Ali Al-Anzi, Ziad Kadhim Thabet Dec 2008

Theoretical Dialectics Of The Relationship Between Collectivism And Cooperation In Organizational Theory, Saad Ali Al-Anzi, Ziad Kadhim Thabet

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

The research aims to clarify the intellectual confusion surrounding these concepts by analyzing their roots in organization theory. It posits that while collectivism often focuses on the shared identity and goals of a group, cooperation is a functional mechanism of interaction and effort coordination. The paper highlights how the failure to distinguish between the two can lead to "intellectual alienation" within organizations, where the intended synergy of a collective does not necessarily translate into effective cooperative behavior. Methodologically, the study relies on a theoretical and analytical approach to re-examine existing literature. The findings suggest that fostering a truly collaborative environment …

Estimating And Updating The National Accounts Matrix Using The (C.E) Method: A Comparative Study Of The Used Methods, Sahar M. A. Sahar M.A.Al-Qabily Dec 2008

Estimating And Updating The National Accounts Matrix Using The (C.E) Method: A Comparative Study Of The Used Methods, Sahar M. A. Sahar M.A.Al-Qabily

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

It is well-established that there is a continuous and growing need for consistent economic data across various sectors of the national economy to support economic analysis and the development of macroeconomic models. The Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) provides a comprehensive framework of fundamental information for such modeling and analysis, as it integrates input-output tables with national product and income accounts within a consistent structure. While input-output tables are typically prepared every five years or so, national product and income accounts are compiled annually with a time lag, making the updating of a Social Accounting Matrix for a subsequent period not …

Customer Profitability Analysis, Nsaif Jasim ‎Aljbwry, Bushra Fadhil Khudhair Al-Taie Dec 2008

Customer Profitability Analysis, Nsaif Jasim ‎Aljbwry, Bushra Fadhil Khudhair Al-Taie

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

The primary focus of modern management methods lies in achieving consumer or customer satisfaction, which constitutes the ultimate priority. Customers represent the core of success for any organization; thus, the number of "customer-driven" organizations is substantial and steadily increasing. Successful organizations (Prosper) place significant emphasis on their customers within the decision-making process. Accordingly, management accountants are paying increasing attention to Customer Profitability Analysis (CPA), whereby they record and analyze customer-specific revenues and costs. By obtaining this information, managers can ensure that customer contributions add sizably to the organization’s overall profitability. In fact, customer profitability analysis is a specialized form of …

Overreaction To Fearsome Risks, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard Zeckhauser Dec 2008

Overreaction To Fearsome Risks, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard Zeckhauser

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Fearsome risks are those that stimulate strong emotional responses. Such risks, which usually involve high consequences, tend to have low probabilities, since life today is no longer nasty, brutish and short. In the face of a low-probability fearsome risk, people often exaggerate the benefits of preventive, risk-reducing, or ameliorative measures. In both personal life and politics, the result is damaging overreactions to risks. We offer evidence for the phenomenon of probability neglect, failing to distinguish between high and low-probability risks. Action bias is a likely result.

Space-Time Regression Modeling Of Tree Growth Using The Skew-T Distribution, Farouk S. Nathoo Dec 2008

Space-Time Regression Modeling Of Tree Growth Using The Skew-T Distribution, Farouk S. Nathoo

COBRA Preprint Series

In this article we present new statistical methodology for the analysis of repeated measures of spatially correlated growth data. Our motivating application, a ten year study of height growth in a plantation of even-aged white spruce, presents several challenges for statistical analysis. Here, the growth measurements arise from an asymmetric distribution, with heavy tails, and thus standard longitudinal regression models based on a Gaussian error structure are not appropriate. We seek more flexibility for modeling both skewness and fat tails, and achieve this within the class of skew-elliptical distributions. Within this framework, robust space-time regression models are formulated using random …

Robust Stability And Optimality Conditions For Parametric Infinite And Semi-Infinite Programs, M J. Cánovas, M A. Lopez, Boris S. Mordukhovich, J Parra Dec 2008

Robust Stability And Optimality Conditions For Parametric Infinite And Semi-Infinite Programs, M J. Cánovas, M A. Lopez, Boris S. Mordukhovich, J Parra

Mathematics Research Reports

This paper primarily concerns the study of parametric problems of infinite and semi-infinite programming, where functional constraints are given by systems of infinitely many linear inequalities indexed by an arbitrary set T, where decision variables run over Banach (infinite programming) or finite-dimensional (semi-infinite case) spaces, and where objectives are generally described by nonsmooth and nonconvex cost functions. The parameter space of admissible perturbations in such problems is formed by all bounded functions on T equipped with the standard supremum norm. Unless the index set T is finite, this space is intrinsically infinite-dimensional (nonreflexive and nonseparable) of the l(infinity)-type. By using …

The Inheritance Of Morphological And Behavioral Differences In The Mating Signals Of Sailfin And Shortfin Mollies, Stephanie Loveless Dec 2008

The Inheritance Of Morphological And Behavioral Differences In The Mating Signals Of Sailfin And Shortfin Mollies, Stephanie Loveless

All Theses

Changes in mating signals often result in the development of new species, thus, understanding the genetic basis of traits that confer pre-mating reproductive isolation can shed light on the speciation process. This study used interspecific hybridization between poeciliid fish, a sailfin molly (Poecilia velifera) and a shortfin molly (P. mexicana), to generate reciprocal F1 and backcross hybrids to investigate patterns of inheritance of traits that contribute to mating signal differences between these two groups of mollies. The first part of my study focused on behavioral differences in the mating system of sailfin and shortfin mollies. I observed mating behaviors of …

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Jr. Dec 2008

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Jr.

Mercer Law Review

No matter how well you indoctrinate the Mayor and Council in exercising discretionary powers in an objective manner, someone always seems to cut to the chase and ask the wrong question. For example, I've admonished Councils for years not to show favoritism at zoning hearings, particularly to impassioned pleas for opposition by their constituents who, of course, never address the objective standards of the zoning ordinance. Yet, recently, after a noted zoning lawyer so eloquently presented his development client's proposal for rezoning, the only question the Mayor asked was, "Has your client got any kinfolks living here?"

It is humanly …

Evidence, Marc T. Treadwell Dec 2008

Evidence, Marc T. Treadwell

Mercer Law Review

The most significant news during the current survey period, as in the past several survey periods, continued to be the judiciary's struggles with "tort reform" legislation enacted by the Georgia General Assembly in 2005, most notably Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.) § 24-9-67.1 which purports to adopt, more or less, the United States Supreme Court's decision in Daubert v. Merrell-Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc. If the Daubert decisions discussed in this survey are any indication, Georgia's appellate courts are far from reaching a consensus on the proper application and interpretation of Georgia's Daubert statute.

Efficient Utilization Of Water And Nitrogen Resources For Grain Sorghum Under Rainfed Conditions, Akwasi A. Abunyewa

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is the fifth world leading cereal after maize, wheat, rice and barley. The crop can yield reasonably well under adverse conditions of low soil water and high temperature. A three year field study was conducted in a transect across Nebraska where annual mean precipitation ranges from 300 to 900 mm yr-1 to evaluate management practices to optimize yield potential under water limiting conditions. Loss in grain yield due to planting configurations ranged from 20 to 30% with skip-row configurations compared to conventional planting configuration (s0) at the site with greatest precipitation. At …
