Passage, Shannon Wright

All Theses

This exhibition addresses reconciliation. Through the journey of understanding we are
able to either pass through our negative experiences or we can choose to accept that they
are what they are. Through the placement of images the viewer is brought through this
passage to a threshold for crossing from discomfort to reconciliation. At 40'x50' these
photographs have become environments that viewers become immersed in. When I
begin to make my images I have not yet fully realized the final photograph and there are
several camera controls that I utilize to complete my images. When I place an object in
my …

Transformation Of Sulfonamide Antibiotics On Soil Mineral Oxides, Baishu Guo Dec 2008

Transformation Of Sulfonamide Antibiotics On Soil Mineral Oxides, Baishu Guo

All Theses

Determining the occurrence and potential adverse effects of antibiotic pharmaceuticals released into the environment is a critical step towards responsible environmental stewardship. Under aqueous conditions typically found in soils and natural waters, the antibiotic agent sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was transformed in the presence of pyrolusite MnO2 via oxidative pathways. At least 50% loss of SMX was observed after 269 hr in acidic and basic solutions (pH 3-9). A maximum of 100% loss was recorded at pH 3 and 66% loss was recorded at circumneutral pH. Concomitantly, aqueous manganese concentrations increased to around 10 µM at pH 3 and 2 µM at …

Gatekeeping Vs. Balancing In The Constitutional Law Of Elections: Methodological Uncertainty On The High Court, Christopher S. Elmendorf, Edward B. Foley Dec 2008

Gatekeeping Vs. Balancing In The Constitutional Law Of Elections: Methodological Uncertainty On The High Court, Christopher S. Elmendorf, Edward B. Foley

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

This Essay examines the methodological upheaval created by the quartet of constitutional election law cases decided during October Term 2007. Prior to this Term, the ascendant analytic approach called for a threshold characterization of the burden on the plaintiff's rights, which characterization determined whether the court would apply strict scrutiny or lax, rational-basis-like review. The characterization was generally formal in nature. But in light of the Supreme Court's latest decisions, it is now open to a lower court adjudicating a First Amendment or Equal Protection challenge to an election law-absent a Supreme Court precedent squarely on point- (1) to engage …

Can Fundamental Factors Explain Asymmetric Correlations In Stock Market Returns?, Hiroyuki Miyake Dec 2008

Can Fundamental Factors Explain Asymmetric Correlations In Stock Market Returns?, Hiroyuki Miyake

Economics Honors Projects

Asymmetric Correlation is an empirical observation that correlations between security returns are significantly higher during market downturns compared to upturns. Previous literature has focused on examining this asymmetry by way of a rigorous statistical analysis. However, the sources of this phenomenon had not been explored yet.

In this paper, I propose a simply hypothesis: asymmetric correlations can be explained in terms of the securities' underlying fundamental factors. Using the recently proposed Dynamic Conditional Correlations (DCC) class of GARCH models, I estimate the covariance of the fundamental factors and model securities' returns.

I find that fundamental factors can only partially explain …

The Making And Nurturing Of Relationships: An Ujelang/Enewetak Model In The Context Of Change, Laurence Marshall Carucci Dec 2008

The Making And Nurturing Of Relationships: An Ujelang/Enewetak Model In The Context Of Change, Laurence Marshall Carucci

Pacific Studies

Pacific adoption has long served as a prototypical contrary case that complicates the ethnocentric and simplistic kinship logics of sociobiology and evolutionary psychology—logical approaches which themselves project and perpetuate Euro-American ideas about relatedness. Yet, at the same moment the Pacific adoption literature has confronted the biases of Euro-American categories of kinship and interpersonal relatedness, it also has perpetuated certain stereotypic contours of those categories by shadowing the outlines of their very existence. Escaping those contours in an English publication is, ultimately, impossible. Nevertheless, more finely rendered accounts are attainable. In this paper, I attempt to fashion one such account, a …

Preliminary Analysis Of The Ecology And Geography Of The Asian Nuthatches (Aves: Sittidae), Shaily Menon, Zafar-Ul Islam, Jorge Soberon, A. Townsend Peterson Dec 2008

Preliminary Analysis Of The Ecology And Geography Of The Asian Nuthatches (Aves: Sittidae), Shaily Menon, Zafar-Ul Islam, Jorge Soberon, A. Townsend Peterson

Peer Reviewed Publications

We explored distributions of Asian nuthatch species in ecological and geographic space using ecological niche modeling based on occurrence data associated with specimens and observations. Nuthatches represent a well-defined clade occurring throughout the Northern Hemisphere, but are most diverse in southern Asia where 15 of the 24 species occur and where the lineage is believed to have evolved. Species richness was focused in a narrow east-west band corresponding to the forested parts of the Himalayas with a maximum number of nine species predicted present in these foci. The distributional predictions have a mid-elevation focus with highest species diversity between 1,000 …

Research To Practice: Comparison Of Vr Outcomes For Clients With Mental Illness Across System Indicators, Joe Marrone, Frank A. Smith, Susan Foley Dec 2008

Research To Practice: Comparison Of Vr Outcomes For Clients With Mental Illness Across System Indicators, Joe Marrone, Frank A. Smith, Susan Foley

Research to Practice Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

The argument that people with psychiatric disabilities cannot work is an empty one, as anecdotal and research data have shown (Bond, 2004). Recently, there has been a plethora of information on evidence based employment strategies, prominently connected with the research on the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model associated with Drake and colleagues at Dartmouth College (Drake, 1998).

Institute Brief: Supporting Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorders: Quality Employment Practices, Alan Kurtz, Melanie Jordan

The Institute Brief Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

It has been known for decades that individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), including those with significant impairment or who have behaviors that others find challenging, can work when they are given appropriate supports. It is also clear that individuals with ASD can benefit from employment. Benefits include improved emotional state, greater financial gain, decreased anxiety, greater self-esteem, and greater independence. Nonetheless, employment outcomes for individuals with ASD have traditionally been poor. Even those who do find work are often underemployed or do not hold onto jobs for a long period of time.

The Greek Relief Committee: America's Response To The Greek Genocide (A Research Note), Nikolaos Hlamides Dec 2008

The Greek Relief Committee: America's Response To The Greek Genocide (A Research Note), Nikolaos Hlamides

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

In studies of the various relief efforts launched in response to the fate of Ottoman Christian minorities in the early twentieth century, much attention is given to the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief and, in particular, to its successors under different names, especially the Near East Relief. The role of other American-based aid organizations has been largely overlooked. This paper serves as an introduction to the Greek Relief Committee, a New York City–based organization that worked alongside other relief organizations from 1917 until 1921, administering aid to the Ottoman Greek population.

Book Review: Helena Cobban, Amnesty After Atrocity? Healing Nations After Genocide And War, Helen Fein Dec 2008

Book Review: Helena Cobban, Amnesty After Atrocity? Healing Nations After Genocide And War, Helen Fein

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Helena Cobban’s Amnesty after Atrocity? offers an exposition of the different ways in which three African states—Rwanda, South Africa, and Mozambique—have responded to crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide and criticizes the prescriptions previously made by international human-rights groups as to the need for prosecution and judgment. Written in a lively style (Cobban is a reporter for the Christian Science Monitor), each chapter begins with quotations from people on the scene and often returns to the judgments of local people.

Students’ Attitudes, Motivation And Anxiety Towards English Language Learning, Meenaz Shams Hashwani Dec 2008

Students’ Attitudes, Motivation And Anxiety Towards English Language Learning, Meenaz Shams Hashwani

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Motivational factors and experiences have the potential to influence students’ attitudes and anxiety levels towards English language learning. Recognizing the importance and multi-dimensional complexities of motivational attitudes and anxiety, this mini-research study attempts to investigate gender wise students’ attitudes, motivation and anxiety towards the learning of English as a second language in the multilingual context of Karachi, Pakistan. The study adapts a survey questionnaire from Gardner’s ‘Attitude Motivation Test Battery,’ to explore attitudes (English language and learning), motivations (intrinsic and extrinsic) and classroom anxiety of grade 8th students in a private secondary school. The survey findings of 77 students (40 …

Exploring Patterns In Teachers’ Conceptions Of Citizenship And Political Participation: A Survey Of Secondary School Teachers In Karachi, Pakistan, Karim Panah

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper examines patterns in teachers’ understanding of conceptual and practical aspects of citizenship by analyzing survey data obtained from 320 teachers of public and private sector secondary schools in Karachi, Pakistan. The survey was conducted using a five-point-Likert scale ranging from ‘strongly disagree through ‘neutral’ to ‘strongly-agree’ and openended questions on citizen participation in politics. The survey questionnaire included 28 items that reflected various aspects of citizen rights and responsibilities. Principal Component Analysis (PCA)) showed several patterns in teacher’s conceptions of citizenship with reference to democratization. The analysis demonstrates that teachers’ conception of citizenship is shaped by confusions and …

A Geophysical Survey Of Fort St. Joseph (20be23), Niles, Michigan, Daniel P. Lynch Dec 2008

A Geophysical Survey Of Fort St. Joseph (20be23), Niles, Michigan, Daniel P. Lynch

Masters Theses

Fort St. Joseph is a 17th-18th century French (and later English) mission-garrison-trading post complex located in southwest Michigan. A geophysical survey was performed and the results of the survey were tested through archaeological excavation. The geophysical methods included ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic induction, electrical resistivity, magnetic gradiometry, and magnetic susceptibility. The results of the archaeological excavations demonstrate that magnetic gradiometry was the preferred geophysical method at this particular site. The magnetic gradiometer survey included both terrestrial and possible submerged portions the site. Laboratory analysis of the magnetic susceptibility and magnetic viscosity of soils and rocks demonstrated that the archaeological features …

Work-Based Social Support In The United States: Limits And New Possibilities, Heather Boushey, Chris Tilly Dec 2008

Work-Based Social Support In The United States: Limits And New Possibilities, Heather Boushey, Chris Tilly

Center for Social Policy Publications

The U.S. social policy framework has always relied on private employers to fill in the gaps for workers, rather than the state. U.S. workers have neither a strong social safety net outside of the labor market, nor an extensive social welfare structure supporting the labor market. For the most part, adequate provision of social benefits depends critically on employers’ voluntary adoption of support policies. For example, the U.S. has neither a universal health plan nor a requirement that employers provide health insurance coverage; the U.S. public system of old-age pensions is work-based, and that public system falls short unless supplemented …

America’S Biggest Low-Wage Industry: Continuity And Change In Retail Jobs, Françoise Carré, Chris Tilly Dec 2008

America’S Biggest Low-Wage Industry: Continuity And Change In Retail Jobs, Françoise Carré, Chris Tilly

Center for Social Policy Publications

For those concerned with job quality in the United States, the retail industry commands attention. Retail is not only the largest low-wage industry in the country’s economy; it is the largest industry, period. It generates numerous entry level jobs for those with limited formal training. Hourly wages of nonsupervisory workers in retail languish at about three-quarters the national average. Retail is a very important employer of young workers. Its workforce is also disproportionately female. Women are concentrated in particular retail sub-sectors and some minority groups seem to remain employed in retail over time. At the same time, retail jobs—at least, …

An Overview Of The Gloves-Off Economy: Workplace Standards At The Bottom Of America’S Labor Market, Annette Bernhardt, Heather Boushey, Laura Dresser, Chris Tilly Dec 2008

An Overview Of The Gloves-Off Economy: Workplace Standards At The Bottom Of America’S Labor Market, Annette Bernhardt, Heather Boushey, Laura Dresser, Chris Tilly

Center for Social Policy Publications

When we talk about the “gloves-off economy,” we are identifying a set of employer strategies and practices that either evade or outright violate the core laws and standards that govern job quality in the U.S. While such strategies have long been present in certain sectors, such as sweatshops and marginal small businesses, we argue that they are spreading. This trend, driven by competitive pressures, has been shaped by an environment where other major economic actors—government, unions, and civil society—have either promoted deregulation or been unable to contain gloves-off business strategies. The result, at the start of the 21st century, is …

Perils On The High Seas: The Effects Of Submersion And Containment On Human Decomposition In Saltwater, Celene Aundrea Sotkowy Dec 2008

Perils On The High Seas: The Effects Of Submersion And Containment On Human Decomposition In Saltwater, Celene Aundrea Sotkowy

Masters Theses

Forensic analysis of decomposing human remains in a submerged and contained aquatic environment is an area of research that lacks systematic evaluation and hinders the ability to accurately determine time since death/submersion. Expanding our understanding of how submersion and containment affects the known taphonomic agents pursuant to aquatic environments will contribute to the knowledge base on human decomposition in a multitude of environments.

In response to this limited knowledge base, this thesis reviews ten marine and air incidents occurring along the coast of British Columbia, Canada in which the bodies of eighteen individuals were recovered from inside the submerged wreckage …

1-(4-Tert-Butylbenzyl)-3-(3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzyl)Benzimidazolium Bromide Monohydrate, Hakan Arslan, Don Vanderveer, Serpil Demir, Smail Özdemir, Bekir Çetinkaya

College of Health, Science, and Technology

A novel N-heterocyclic carbene derivative, C28H 33N2O3+·Br -·H2O, was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H and 13C-NMR and IR spectroscopy and a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. Ions of the title compound are linked by ??? stacking inter-actions (face-face separation 3.441 Å) and C - H?Br and O - H?Br inter-actions. Intra- and intermolecular C - H?O inter-actions are also present. The C - N bond lengths for the compound [1.329 (3), 1.325 (3), 1.389 (3) and 1.391 (3) Å] are all shorter than the average single C - N bond length of 1.48 Å, thus showing varying degrees of …

1,3-Bis(Thio-Phen-2-Ylmeth-Yl)-3,4,5,6-Tetrahydropyrimidinium Trichlorido(?6-Pcymene)Ruthenate(Ii), Hakan Arslan, Don Vanderveer, Smail Özdemir, Nevin Gürbüz, Yetkin Gök, Bekir Çetinkaya

College of Health, Science, and Technology

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, (C14H17N2S2)[Ru(C10H14)Cl3], contains a 1,3-bis-(thio-phen-2-ylmeth-yl)-3,4,5,6-tetra-hydro-pyrimidinium cation and a trichlorido(?6-p-cymene)ruthenate(II) anion. The Ru atom exhibits a distorted octa-hedral coordination with the benzene ring of the p-cymene ligand formally occupying three sites and three chloride atoms occupying the other three sites. The N - C bond lengths of the N - C - N unit of the pyrimidinium cation are shorter than the average single C - N bond length of 1.48 Å, thus showing double-bond character, indicating a partial electron delocalization within the N - C - N fragment. The pyrimidine ring has an envelope …

Forcing And Dynamics Of Seafloor-Water Column Exchange On A Broad Continental Shelf, William B. Savidge, Ann Gargett, Richard A. Jahnke, James R. Nelson, Dana K. Savidge, R Timothy Short, George Voulgaris Dec 2008

Forcing And Dynamics Of Seafloor-Water Column Exchange On A Broad Continental Shelf, William B. Savidge, Ann Gargett, Richard A. Jahnke, James R. Nelson, Dana K. Savidge, R Timothy Short, George Voulgaris

Faculty Publications

Relict sediments of elevated permeability characterize the majority of continental shelves globally (Emery, 1968). In these settings, interactions between benthic boundary layer (BBL) flows and seabed topography generate pressure fluctuations that drive advective and dispersive porewater transport, dramatically increasing the magnitude and variability of porewater solute and particulate exchange across the sediment-water interface (Huettel et al., 1996; Huettel and Rusch, 2000). On broad shallow shelves with a relatively large area-to-volume ratio, the seafloor’s role is magnified. Energetic events may reorganize bedforms across a significant fraction of the shelf, leading to altered exchange dynamics that may persist long after the organizing …

Analysis Of In-Flight Vibration For A Turbo Propeller Aircraft, Kyle Dunno Dec 2008

Analysis Of In-Flight Vibration For A Turbo Propeller Aircraft, Kyle Dunno

All Theses

A data recorder was utilized to record in-flight vibration of a turbo propeller aircraft. The data recorded produced power spectral density (PSD) profiles which are currently used in laboratory settings to drive vibration tables in order to simulate a particular vehicle type. Overall Grms values from the averaged data were then statistically compared to published standards and other studies to determine if there were differences in overall Grms values.
The data recorder was rigidly mounted to the cargo area of the turbo propeller aircraft. Thirty flights were recorded which varied in flight time from less than one hour to greater …

Optimal Maintenance Crew Composition And Enhancement Of Crew Productivity, Robert Schober Dec 2008

Optimal Maintenance Crew Composition And Enhancement Of Crew Productivity, Robert Schober

All Theses

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) dedicates a large portion of its budget and other resources to the maintenance of the State's transportation infrastructure. In order to maximize the efficiency and productivity of the State's highway maintenance workforce, the SCDOT partnered with Clemson University to research the performance of these maintenance crews. The goal of this research is to identify optimal crew compositions, if possible, and to suggest potential crew productivity enhancement methods.
Data was collected from the SCDOT Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) and crew rankings were developed based on several pre-determined performance criteria. These rankings were then …

Characterization Of Campus Parking Lot Stormwater And Remediation Of Risks Using Constructed Wetland Treatment Systems, Andrew Mcqueen

All Theses

Campus parking lot stormwater (CPLSW) runoff mobilizes a variety of constituents from vehicular and atmospheric deposition that may pose risks to receiving aquatic systems. The overall objective of this research was to provide an approach for risk characterization, toxicity identification, and remediation of constituents of concern in CPLSW. The specific objectives of this research were to: (1) Characterize campus parking lot stormwater (CPLSW) to discern the constituents of concern present in these waters; (2) Perform TIE manipulations to identify possible fractions of concern in CPLSW, and; (3) Evaluate the performance of a pilot-scale constructed wetland treatment system (CWTS) designed to …

Trapping Small Hive Beetles, Aethina Tumida Murray, Inside Honey Bee Colonies, Maxcy Nolan Iv Dec 2008

Trapping Small Hive Beetles, Aethina Tumida Murray, Inside Honey Bee Colonies, Maxcy Nolan Iv

All Theses

The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) is an economically important honey bee pest, particularly in the southeastern United States. One method of controlling this pest is the use of an in-hive trap. Many different attractants have been developed and are used in such traps. Part one of my thesis involved testing a new attractant, a pollen substitute inoculated with the yeast Kodamaea ohmeri (NRRL Y-30722). Thirty-two test colonies were established with 0.9-kg (2-lb) packages of bees with queens. Eight colonies were placed in each apiary, and colonies received one of three treatments: 1) yeast-based attractant 2) apple …
