Another Look at Robert E. Lee

In her latest biography, Elizabeth Brown Pryor invites us to read the man, that is, to understand Robert E. Lee through his own words. In his private writings, argues Pryor, Lee revealed himself to be a far more complex and contradictory man than the one who c....

The Effect Of Chromium Propionate On Growth Performance And Carcass Traits In Broilers, A. R. Jackson, S. Powell, S. Johnston, J. L. Shelton, T. D. Bidner, F. R. Valdez, L. L. Southern Dec 2008

The Effect Of Chromium Propionate On Growth Performance And Carcass Traits In Broilers, A. R. Jackson, S. Powell, S. Johnston, J. L. Shelton, T. D. Bidner, F. R. Valdez, L. L. Southern

Faculty Publications

Chromium has been considered by many nutritionists as an essential nutrient for animals and humans. Research on the use of Cr from organic sources in poultry is limited. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of dietary addition of 0, 200, 400, or 800 ppb Cr as chromium propionate on growth performance and carcass traits in 0- to 42- or 0- to 49-d-old broilers. The results of these experiments indicate that Cr as chromium propionate improved feed efficiency in the later phases of growth and decreased mortality in one experiment but not another. Also, chromium propionate supplementation had no …

Identification Of Two Genes, Sll0804 And Slr1306, As Putative Components Of The Co2-Concentrating Mechanism In The Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Strain Pcc 6803, Shulu Zhang, Kevin W. Spann, Laurie K. Frankel, James V. Moroney, Terry M. Bricker Dec 2008

Bricker

Faculty Publications

Insertional transposon mutations in the sll0804 and slr1306 genes were found to lead to a loss of optimal photoautotrophy in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 grown under ambient CO2 concentrations (350 ppm). Mutants containing these insertions (4BA2 and 3ZA12, respectively) could grow photoheterotrophically on glucose or photoautotrophically at elevated CO2 concentrations (50,000 ppm). Both of these mutants exhibited an impaired affinity for inorganic carbon. Consequently, the Sll0804 and Slr1306 proteins appear to be putative components of the carbon-concentrating mechanism in Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803. Life History Observations And Determination Of Potential Host Fish Species For Chipola Slabshell, Elliptio Chipolaensis, Lisa Preister Dec 2008

Life History Observations And Determination Of Potential Host Fish Species For Chipola Slabshell, Elliptio Chipolaensis, Lisa Preister

Theses and Dissertations

North America is home to nearly 300 species of freshwater mussels with approximately 80% being found in the southeastern United States. The Federally threatened species, Elliptio chipolaensis (Chipola slabshell), is considered an endemic species to the Chipola River Basin in the Florida panhandle. E. chipolaensis glochidia are released from the female in conglutinates The potential fish host species for Elliptio chipolaensis are the bluegill and redbreast sunfish. Sixty percent of the bluegill successfully transformed E. chipolaensis glochidia into juvenile mussels while 80% of the redbreast sunfish were successful.

Structural Properties And Crystallization Of Sodium Tellurite Glasses, Kresimir Furic, Masa Rajic-Linaric, C. S. Ray, A. Šantić, Andrea Moguš-Milanković, D. E. Day

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The structural properties and crystallization behaviour of xNa2O-(100-x)TeO2 (0 <= x <= 33.3, x-% mole fraction) glasses have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Raman spectra of glasses show systematic changes in structural units, from TeO4 trigonal bypiramids (tbps) to TeO3 trigonal pyramids (tps) with increasing Na2O content in glass. These structural changes are result of Te-eqOax-Te disruption and the formation of non-bridging oxygens (NBOs) in glass network. when heated at 623 K for 10 h glasses crystallized to different phases: alpha-TeO2, Na2Te4O9 and a new crystalline phase which is believed to be a polymorph of Na2Te2O5.

Measurement Of Liquid Water Accumulation In A Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell With Dead-Ended Anode, Jason B. Siegel, Denise A. Mckay, Anna G. Stefanopoulou Dec 2008

Measurement Of Liquid Water Accumulation In A Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell With Dead-Ended Anode, Jason B. Siegel, Denise A. Mckay, Anna G. Stefanopoulou

Engineering: Faculty Publications

The operation and accumulation of liquid water within the cell structure of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a dead-ended anode is observed using neutron imaging. The measurements are performed on a single cell with 53 square centimeter active area, Nafion 111-IP membrane and carbon cloth Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL). Even though dry hydrogen is supplied to the anode via pressure regulation, accumulation of liquid water in the anode gas distribution channels was observed for all current densities up to 566 mA cm-2 and 100% cathode humidification. The accumulation of liquid water in the anode channels is followed …

The Development And Analysis Of A Closed System Of Vitrification For Mammalian Embryos, Jennifer Graves-Herring Dec 2008

The Development And Analysis Of A Closed System Of Vitrification For Mammalian Embryos, Jennifer Graves-Herring

All Dissertations

Embryo cryopreservation is an integral part of assisted reproduction because it allows for future use of these embryos. Cryopreservation occurs when there are supernumerary embryos or when an embryo transfer cannot be performed.
There are two main methods to cryopreserve embryos. The most recent is vitrification, which uses high concentrations of cryoprotectants, a short time to cool and avoids ice crystals. The 'gold standard' is the slow-cool method, which uses low concentrations of cryoprotectants, a long time to cool embryos and produces extracellular ice crystals.
Prior to introducing vitrification as part of the human cryopreservation regime, it is important that …
