Healthcare Expenditure Vs Healthcare Outcomes: A Comparison Of 25 World Health Organization Member Countries, Stevan Hidalgo Dec 2008

Healthcare Expenditure Vs Healthcare Outcomes: A Comparison Of 25 World Health Organization Member Countries, Stevan Hidalgo

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study attempts to determine whether there is a correlation between a country's per capita expenditure on healthcare and its healthcare outcomes. Prior studies have been done to assess access experiences and variations by income in various countries, and to compare the US's multi-payer system to countries with universal or national health insurance. Researchers and authors agree that certain elements of a country's healthcare system are superior, while others are inferior, and that these elements combined would produce a healthcare system with first-rate outcomes, high patient satisfaction, and universal access to healthcare for all citizens. This study was carried out …

Relationship Of Emotional Intelligence Of Healthcare Leaders And Measures Of Employee Satisfaction And Turnover, Karen Jarman Dec 2008

Relationship Of Emotional Intelligence Of Healthcare Leaders And Measures Of Employee Satisfaction And Turnover, Karen Jarman

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A 2007 projection of nursing shortages predicts that the United States shortage of registered nurses will be approximately 340,000 in 2020 and that the average age of a nurse will be 45. (Auergach, Buerhaus et al. 2007) Many healthcare facilities already have perennial openings for nurses, ultrasonographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and other hard-to fill positions. The cost of filling any vacancy is the subject of many articles and sleepless nights for health care administrators. Headhunters make cold calls to recruit candidates to fill their positions. And healthcare administrators are looking for a way to stop the flow of critical personal …

Representative Juries: Examining The Initial And Eligible Pools Of Jurors Dec 2008

Representative Juries: Examining The Initial And Eligible Pools Of Jurors

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

State law provides that master jury lists are comprised by combining the lists of registered voters and registered drivers in the state of Nebraska. There have been anecdotal concerns that because minorities may be less likely to be registered to vote and less likely to be registered to drive, the current source lists may not effectively achieve a representative master list. The findings of this examination support this assertion. Based on an examination of juror qualification forms from 8 of Nebraska’s most diverse counties, data indicate that there are significant racial disparities in the initial and eligible pools of jurors. …

Private Equity's Three Lessons For Agency Theory, William Wilson Bratton Dec 2008

Private Equity's Three Lessons For Agency Theory, William Wilson Bratton

Articles

It is time to consider the lessons to be learned from the recent boom in private equity buyouts, not least in view of its abrupt termination in the wake of tightened credit. In the past, such inquiries have been undertaken in the context of agency theory and have focused on the buyout's implications for solving the problem of separation of ownership and control. This article reverses the pattern of inquiry to consider the buyout's implications for agency theory, pointing to three lessons. The first lesson addresses agency theory's three-way association among control transfers, governance discipline and hostile takeovers, suggesting that …

An Analysis Of Standardized Versus Relationship Bank Lending To Small Firms, Polly T. Hardee Dec 2008

An Analysis Of Standardized Versus Relationship Bank Lending To Small Firms, Polly T. Hardee

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Using the 1998 Survey of Small Business Finances and banking data to produce a bank-firm match, the author tests for evidence of standardized versus relationship lending methods in both total bank credit as well as credit emanating from the firm’s most important source of financial services, its primary bank. The author employs a two-step Heckman procedure to test the likelihood a small firm has bank debt, then conditional upon having debt, the level of credit outstanding. By comparing the determinates of bank and firm characteristics of primary bank credit with credit from all bank sources, the author finds relationship lending …

An Analysis Of Executive Compensation In Small Businesses, Kathleen A. Farrell, Drew B. Winters Dec 2008

An Analysis Of Executive Compensation In Small Businesses, Kathleen A. Farrell, Drew B. Winters

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Using a broad-based sample of small businesses, we analyze the relation between accounting-based firm performance measures and executive compensation for S-corporations, and C-corporations. After controlling for the potential endogeneity associated with the choice of organizational form, we find a positive relation between executive pay and ROA in S-corporations and C-corporations. We also find a positive relation between executive pay and total asset turnover but the relation is stronger for S-corporations. We document a positive relation between executive salaries and more diffuse ownership, owner managers, and when the founder is the current owner. We find a negative relation between executive salaries …

Banking Market Concentration And Credit Availability To Small Businesses, Yongjin Park Dec 2008

Banking Market Concentration And Credit Availability To Small Businesses, Yongjin Park

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper examines how banking market concentration affects small business credit. Based on an idea that line-of-credit (L/C) limit and L/C balance provide useful proxies for credit supply to and credit demand of a firm, we examine the effect of bank concentration on L/C limits and L/C balances. Using Heckman selection models to correct for sample selection, bank concentration is found to lower limits of L/Cs, where there was no statistically significant difference in L/C balances. We also find that small firms in concentrated banking markets have lower overall institutional debt-to-asset ratios.

An Investigation Of The Types Of Problems Faced By Small Firms And How They Affect The Funding Choices Made By Three Distinct Market Segments, Barbara K. Fuller, Darrell F. Parker Dec 2008

An Investigation Of The Types Of Problems Faced By Small Firms And How They Affect The Funding Choices Made By Three Distinct Market Segments, Barbara K. Fuller, Darrell F. Parker

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This article looks at the relationship between the problems faced by small business owners and the funding sources used to solve those problems. Three problem types are identified: organizational systems, external, and sales and marketing problems. Based on these three problem types and the funding sources used by owners, the market is segmented into three groups using cluster analysis. Segment 1 is made up of firms with few problems. This segment uses the widest array of financial sources. Segment 2 has more problems than segment 3, but both need help with organizational systems resulting in the use of fewer sources.

"George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People": Hip Hop, Public Discourse And Black Politics In The Early 21st Century, Hazel Bell James Cole

Dissertations

Recently, more scholars are examining hip hop as a powerful cultural, communicative force, yet hip hop's political orientation goes unnoticed. This study highlights the politics found in hip hop culture and in rap music since 2000 by exploring hip hop as a social movement. This study utilizes a critical, cultural approach by applying ideological case study and textual analyses methods. Song lyrics, activist efforts and black politics prove the political orientation of hip hop culture, which revealed that rap music in general is limited by capitalistic, hegemonic restraints juxtaposed to rappers serving as the legitimate voice of the marginalized and …

Assessing Podcasting As A Learning Methodology For Digital Natives And Digital Immigrants In The Corporate Learning Environment, Niccole Byrd Chandler

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher examined employee perceptions of pod casting through the use of the Technology Acceptance Model and how those perceptions influenced corporate decision making for the selection of podcasting technologies. The stratified random sample was divided into two groups: digital natives (N = 127) and digital immigrants (N = 128). Both groups consisted of employees that work within learning environments at one of three service-oriented organizations within the United States. The groups answered the survey-based test to determine their perceptions of ease of use and usefulness toward podcasting in a corporate training environment. Results revealed a statistically significant difference between …
