Outcome Evaluation: United Nations Development Programme Support To "Strengthening And Further Expansion Of The Mine Action Capacity In Azerbaijan" Project, Alistair Craib

Global CWD Repository

The Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) is a success story and is one of only five such agencies with comparable success. If the main stakeholders maintain their current support and approach to it, that success should continue.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) approach to the project with ANAMA has proven to be a large part of this success and although its impact is now less – given the increasing strength of ANAMA – its role is still very important.

All the Outcomes and Outputs assessed by this evaluation have been met.

Finding Life: An Organic Model Of Renewal For Existing Churches, Thomas E. Rester Jr. Dec 2008

Finding Life: An Organic Model Of Renewal For Existing Churches, Thomas E. Rester Jr.

Doctor of Ministry

Statistics reveal most existing mainline churches are small, declining, and unable to minister effectively in their current environment. Rising stress is the result for these congregations. For mission and ministry to continue in many of these places, the stress must become an opportunity to release a deeper organic understanding of identity and ministry within the fluid postmodern context.

Chapter 2 presents biblical materials from the book of Acts. Focusing on Acts 15, we discover that in a moment of fil"eat stress and confusion, the church was able to e change and evolve to find new life in the midst of …

Steganography In Ipv6, Barret Miller Dec 2008

Steganography In Ipv6, Barret Miller

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Steganography is the process of hiding a secret message within another message such that it is difficult to detect the presence of the secret message. In other words, the existence of the secret message is hidden. A covert channel refers to the actual medium that is used to communicate the information such as a message, image, or file. This honors thesis uses steganography within the source address fields of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) packets to create a covert channel through which clandestine messages are passed from one party to another. A fully functional computer program was designed and written …

La Inmigración Africana A España Y Argentina En La Época De La Globalización, Laura K. Cullenward

Hispanic Studies Honors Projects

International migration, with its complex web of economic, social, demographic, and political consequences, is a theme that dominates national and international interests. This thesis explores a connection between illegal African immigration to Spain and a recent phenomenon of Senegalese immigration to Argentina through an examination of historical trajectories of immigration, legal and illegal entries, and migration legislation. In particular the focus will be on the role of Spanish national migration law and border control as a deterrent against illegal African immigration and a resultant wave of Senegalese immigrants representing a new phenomenon of ecologically pushed migration from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Time-Distance-Speed-Angle Problem, Nihad E. Daidzic

Aviation Department Publications

In this age of satellite navigation (GPS), Inertial Reference Systems (IRS), and Flight Management Systems (FMS), why would anyone bother with the fundamentals, right? Wrong! A well educated and trained pilot is still the best asset in any aircraft. Unfortunately, we see a trend in pilot training where the basic science and concepts are increasingly disregarded. Ignoring the best in human nature – intellectual curiosity and the quest for knowledge – and inviting the worst, boredom and the feeling of inferiority, will certainly take its toll sooner or later.

A simple method, rarely ever taught in practice, but found in …

Introduction

This report details the recent progress achieved under the Cooperative Agreement # 688-A-00- 007-00043-00. The report covers progress in the Production-Marketing, Food Processing and Décrue Sorghum components.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has stated that we now have an historic opportunity to revitalize agriculture (see box below). In response to such comments we have designed this project specifically to move sorghum and millet production technologies onto farmers’ fields, link farmers’ organizations to food and feed processors and to commercialize processing technologies so as to enhance markets. To achieve this we improve the supply chain from the farm level to …

Characterizing Forest Fragments In Boreal, Temperate, And Tropical Ecosystems, Arjan J. H. Meddens, Andrew T. Hudak, Jeffrey S. Evans, William A. Gould, Grizelle Gonzalez

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

An increased ability to analyze landscapes in a spatial manner through the use of remote sensing leads to improved capabilities for quantifying human-induced forest fragmentation. Developments of spatially explicit methods in landscape analyses are emerging. In this paper, the image delineation software program eCognition and the spatial pattern analysis program FRAGSTATS were used to quantify patterns of forest fragments on six landscapes across three different climatic regions characterized by different moisture regimes and different influences of human pressure. Our results support the idea that landscapes with higher road and population density are more fragmented; however, there are other, equally influential …

The Grievor was initially discharged for being absent without leave. After the first arbitration hearing the Grievor was reinstated with conditions; the same conditions were awarded after a second hearing. The Grievor has now been terminated for breach of one of those conditions - the need to seek immediate medical attention when absent from work due to illness. Although the Grievor became ill Sunday evening, the Union believed that by seeking medical attention on Monday the conditions of the previous Consent Award had been met.

Hydraulic Actuated Automotive Cooling Systems - Nonlinear Control And Test, John Wagner, M H. Salah, P M. Frick, D M. Dawson

Publications

The replacement of traditional automotive mechanical cooling system components with computer controlled servo-motor driven actuators can improve temperature tracking and reduce parasitic losses. The integration of hydraulic actuators in the engine cooling circuit offers greater power density in a smaller package space when compared with electric actuators. In this paper, a comprehensive nonlinear backstepping robust control technique is developed to regulate the engine coolant temperature by controlling a hydraulic coolant pump and radiator fan. An experimental test bench has been assembled to investigate the hydraulic automotive thermal system performance. Representative numerical and experimental results are presented and discussed. Overall, the …

Reviewing Existing Knowledge Prior To Conducting Animal Studies, Andrew Knight Dec 2008

Reviewing Existing Knowledge Prior To Conducting Animal Studies, Andrew Knight

Experimentation Collection

Highly polarised viewpoints about animal experimentation have often prevented agreement. However, important common ground between advocates and opponents was demonstrated within a discussion forum hosted at www.research-methodology.org.uk in July–August 2008, by the independent charity, SABRE Research UK. Agreement existed that many animal studies have methodological flaws — such as inappropriate sample sizes, lack of randomised treatments, and unblinded outcome assessments — that may introduce bias and limit statistical validity. There was also agreement that systematic reviews of the human utility of animal models yield the highest quality of evidence, as their reliance on methodical and impartial methods to select significant …

Increasing Our Compassion Footprint: The Animals’ Manifesto, Marc Bekoff Dec 2008

Increasing Our Compassion Footprint: The Animals’ Manifesto, Marc Bekoff

Human and Animal Bonding Collection

Our relationships with animals are wide-ranging. When people tell me that they love animals and then harm or kill them I tell them I’m glad they don’t love me. Many individuals, including scientists, ignore their responsibility when they interact with animals and fail to recognize that doing something in the name of science, which usually means in the name of humans, is not an adequate reason for intentionally causing suffering, pain, or death. “Good welfare” usually is not “good enough.” Existing regulations allow animals to be treated in regrettable ways that demean us as a species. Compassion is the key …

Developmental Toxicity Testing: Protecting Future Generations?, Jarrod Bailey

Experimentation Collection

A recent editorial is discussed, which implied that animal-based developmental and reproductive toxicology tests will continue to be crucial, that the thalidomide disaster could have been prevented by more animal testing, and that tests on juvenile animals would help to protect children (as developing adults) from the adverse effects of pharmaceuticals. It is argued that animal tests in these scientific areas do not provide reliable data that are predictive for human responses and, even if they did, the tests are too expensive and time-consuming for application to the very large number of substances that need to be tested. It is …

Faecal-Centric Approaches To Wildlife Ecology And Conservation; Methods, Data And Ethics, C. T. Darimont, T. E. Reimchen, H. M. Bryan, P. C. Paquet

Ethics and Conservation Biology Collection

Abundant and commonly encountered in the field, wildlife faeces have long attracted scientists. Recent advances in molecular techniques, however, especially when coupled with creative study designs, can now yield a great variety of high quality data. Herein, we review the opportunities and challenges of faecal-centric approaches to address ecological and conservation questions using wolves of coastal British Columbia, Canada, as a case system. We begin by discussing methodological considerations, which should have broad applicability to any wildlife study system. We then summarize the extensive and unique variety of data that has emerged from our ‘facts from faeces’ approach with wolves, …

Understanding The Human Aspects Of Animal Hoarding, Amanda I. Reinisch

Passive Cruelty to Animals Collection

The Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium reviewed the case records of 71 incidents from across the United States and Canada to determine what characterizes a typical animal hoarding case (5). Of the cases reviewed, 83% involved women (71% involved individuals, who were widowed, divorced, or single); 53% of the animal hoarding residences were home to other individuals including children (5%), elderly dependents and disabled people (21%). Often essential utilities and major appliances such as showers, heaters, stoves, toilets, and sinks were not functional. Residential home interiors were usually unsanitary, 93%; 70% had fire hazards; and 16% of residences involved in …

Recombination-Based In Vivo Expression Technology Identifies Helicobacter Pylori Genes Important For Host Colonization, Andrea Castillo, Andrew J. Woodruff, Lynn E. Connolly, William E. Sause, Karen M. Ottemann Dec 2008

Recombination-Based In Vivo Expression Technology Identifies Helicobacter Pylori Genes Important For Host Colonization, Andrea Castillo, Andrew J. Woodruff, Lynn E. Connolly, William E. Sause, Karen M. Ottemann

Biology Faculty Publications

Here we undertook to identify colonization and gastric disease-promoting factors of the human gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori as genes that were induced in response to the stomach environment. Using recombination-based in vivo expression technology (RIVET), we identified six promoters induced in the host compared to laboratory conditions. Three of these promoters, designated Pivi10, Pivi66, and Pivi77, regulate genes that H. pylori may use to interact with other microbes or the host. Pivi10 likely regulates the mobA, mobB, and mobD genes, which have potential roles in horizontal gene transfer through plasmid mobilization. Pivi66 occurs in the cytotoxin-associated gene pathogenicity island, a …
