Social Psychology Of Religion, Jessica M. Gifford Dec 2008

Social Psychology Of Religion, Jessica M. Gifford

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"John Polkinghorne’s description of God offers an insight into what supports his belief in God. Each religion has a specific description of who God is understood to be. Polkinghorne believes that God must have a purpose, and a mind with which to ponder this purpose and make decisions. While we may not be clear on what this purpose is and to what extent this mind reaches, Polkinghorne believes that the universe would not otherwise exist without the presence of God. He does not explain why God’s presence is veiled, …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I figured it was about time I checked in with my favorite religion professors from my last three years of college and see how everything is going. You all probably are approaching mid-semester soon and I cannot tell you how good it feels to not think about tests and papers anymore. I do have some good news though. After a whole summer of contemplating what I was going to do with my life, I finally landed an amazing job. I work at a law firm, Pillar Processing LLC, out …

The Russia And Chechnya Conflict: Through Chechnya's Eyes, Meghan Mcdonald Dec 2008

The Russia And Chechnya Conflict: Through Chechnya's Eyes, Meghan Mcdonald

International Studies Masters

The intention of this paper is to provide an explanation for the issues that Russia currently faces as a result of the horrific human rights violations during its war with Chechnya. The argument asserts that the terrorist issues that Russia currently faces with Chechen Muslims are in direct response to its brutal treatment of the Chechen people within the last few decades. Russia' s former President, Vladimir Putin, unfoundedly places Russia in the same category of victims of terrorist attacks as the United States on September 11th, 2001. The chaos and destruction that Russia created in the Republic of Chechnya …

Secondary Electron Emission From Freely Supported Nanowires, Makoto Suzuki, Kazuhiro Kumagai, Takashi Sekiguchi, Alan M. Cassell, Tsutomu Saito, Cary Y. Yang Dec 2008

Secondary Electron Emission From Freely Supported Nanowires, Makoto Suzuki, Kazuhiro Kumagai, Takashi Sekiguchi, Alan M. Cassell, Tsutomu Saito, Cary Y. Yang

Electrical and Computer Engineering

We present secondary electron (SE) emission results from freely supported carbon/silicon nitride (Si3N4) hybrid nanowires using scanning electron microscopy. We found that, contrary to bulk materials, the SE emission from insulating or electrically isolated metallic nanowires is strongly suppressed by the penetrating beam. A mechanism of the SE suppression by the positive specimen charging is proposed, which is based on a total emission yield calculation using the Monte Carlo technique. This finding provides an important basis for studying low-energy electron emission from nanostructures under a penetrating electron beam.

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

While significant progress has been made to better protect the country from health emergencies, funding for essential programs has been cut, putting these improvements in jeopardy. Additionally, a number of critical areas of preparedness still have significant gaps, including surge capacity and biosurveillance systems, and these problems are less likely to be addressed as funding decreases.

Planetary Systems Around Close Binary Stars: The Case Of The Very Dusty, Sun-Like, Spectroscopic Binary Bd+20 307, Benjamin Zuckerman, Francis C. Fekel, Michael H. Williamson, Gregory W. Henry, Michael P. Muno

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Field star BD+20 307 is the dustiest known main-sequence star, based on the fraction of its bolometric luminosity, ~4%, that is emitted at infrared wavelengths. The particles that carry this large infrared luminosity are unusually warm, comparable to the temperature of the zodiacal dust in the solar system, and their existence is likely to be a consequence of a fairly recent collision of large objects such as planets or planetary embryos. Thus, the age of BD+20 307 is potentially of interest in constraining the era of terrestrial planet formation. The present project was initiated with an attempt to derive this …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present new Spitzer observations of the phase variation of the hot Jupiter HD 189733b in the MIPS 24 μm bandpass, spanning the same part of the planet's orbit as our previous observations in the IRAC 8 μm bandpass (Knutson et al. 2007). We find that the minimum hemisphere-averaged flux from the planet in this bandpass is 76% ± 3% of the maximum flux; this corresponds to minimum and maximum hemisphere-averaged brightness temperatures of 984 ± 48 K and 1220 ±  47 K, respectively. The planet reaches its maximum flux at an orbital phase of 0.396 ± 0.022, corresponding to …

Abstraction As A Basis For The Computational Interpretation Of Creative Cross-Modal Metaphor, Sylvia Weber Russell Dec 2008

Abstraction As A Basis For The Computational Interpretation Of Creative Cross-Modal Metaphor, Sylvia Weber Russell

Computer Science

Various approaches to computational metaphor interpretation are based on pre-existing similarities between source and target domains and/or are based on metaphors already observed to be prevalent in the language. This paper addresses similarity-creating cross-modal metaphoric expressions. It is shown how the “abstract concept as object” (or reification) metaphor plays a central role in a large class of metaphoric extensions. The described approach depends on the imposition of abstract ontological components, which represent source concepts, onto target concepts. The challenge of such a system is to represent both denotative and connotative components which are extensible, together with a framework of general …

Integrating Landscapes That Have Experienced Rural Depopulation And Ecological Homogenization Into Tropical Conservation Planning, Aerin L. Jacob, Ismael Vaccaro, Raja Sengupta, Joel N. Hartter, Colin A. Chapman Dec 2008

Integrating Landscapes That Have Experienced Rural Depopulation And Ecological Homogenization Into Tropical Conservation Planning, Aerin L. Jacob, Ismael Vaccaro, Raja Sengupta, Joel N. Hartter, Colin A. Chapman

Geography

If current trends of declining fertility rates and increasing abandonment of rural land as a result of urbanization continue, this will signal a globally significant transformation with important consequences for policy makers interested in conservation planning. This transformation is presently evident in a number of countries and projections suggest it may occur in the future in many developing countries. We use rates of population growth and urbanization to project population trends in rural areas for 25 example countries. Our projections indicate a general decline in population density that has either occurred already (e.g., Mexico) or may occur in the future …

A 60 Ghz Wireless Network For Enabling Uncompressed Video Communication, Harkirat Singh, Jisung Oh, Changyeul Kweon, Xiangping Qin, Huai-Rong Shao, Chiu Ngo

Articles

Uncompressed high-definition video streaming over wireless personal area networks is a challenging problem because of the high data rate requirement and channel variations. With the advances in RF technology and the huge bandwidth available worldwide in the 57–66 GHz millimeter-wave unlicensed spectrum, mmWave WPANs that can support multigigabit transmission are being developed. However, compared to low-frequency signals (2.4 or 5 GHz), mmWave signals are more fragile; indeed, the propagation losses are significantly higher. In this article we present an mmWave system for supporting uncompressed HD video up to 3 Gb/s. The system includes various efficient error protection and concealment schemes …

Feedback Linearizability Of Strict Feedforward Systems, Witold Respondek, Issa Amadou Tall Dec 2008

Feedback Linearizability Of Strict Feedforward Systems, Witold Respondek, Issa Amadou Tall

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

For any strict feedforward system that is feedback linearizable we provide (following our earlier results) an algorithm, along with explicit transformations, that linearizes the system by change of coordinates and feedback in two steps: first, we bring the system to a newly introduced Nonlinear Brunovský canonical form (NBr) and then we go from (NBr) to a linear system. The whole linearization procedure includes diffeo-quadratures (differentiating, integrating, and composing functions) but not solving PDE’s. Application to feedback stabilization of strict feedforward systems is given.

Detection Of Voids In Prestressed Concrete Bridges Using Thermal Imaging And Ground-Penetrating Radar, David G. Pollock, Kenneth J. Dupuis, Benjamin Lacour, Karl R. Olsen Dec 2008

Detection Of Voids In Prestressed Concrete Bridges Using Thermal Imaging And Ground-Penetrating Radar, David G. Pollock, Kenneth J. Dupuis, Benjamin Lacour, Karl R. Olsen

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Thermal imaging and ground-penetrating radar was conducted on concrete specimens with simulated air voids. For the thermal imaging inspections, six concrete specimens were constructed during the month of June 2007 to simulate the walls of post-tensioned box girder bridges. The objective was to detect simulated air voids within grouted post-tensioning ducts, thus locating areas where the post-tensioning steel strands are vulnerable to corrosion. The most important deduction taken from these inspections was that PT-ducts and simulated voids were more detectable in the 20 cm (8 in.) thick specimens than in the 30 cm (12 in.) thick specimens. While inspections of …

Anti-Venom Activity Of Medicinal Plants – A Mini Review, S. Meenatchisundaram Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Extracts from plants have been used among traditional healers, especially in tropical areas where there are plentiful sources, as therapy for snakebite for a long time. Several medicinal plants, which appear in old drug recipes or which have been passed on by oral tradition, are believed to be snakebite antidotes. In modern science, there have been many attempts to study these plants to clarify their effectiveness.

Preliminary Phytochemical Studies And Antibacterial Activity Of Ocimum Sanctum L., X. Baskaran

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Ocimum sanctum, commonly known as ‘Sacred basil’ or ‘Holy basil’, is grown as a household plant in India. This preliminary phytochemical study was carried out in acetone, benzene and chloroform extracts and the results showed the presence of numerous phytochemical compounds. The antibacterial activity was analyzed using four different bacterial strains (E.coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia) by using agar disc diffusion method. Our bacterial assay revealed that the extracts showed good antibacterial activity, but the acetone extract didn’t show any specific activity. The presence of the phytochemicals signifies the potential of Ocimum sanctum as …

On The Mixed Sum Of Doubly Infinite And Finite Independent Random Variables, Mridula Garg Dec 2008

On The Mixed Sum Of Doubly Infinite And Finite Independent Random Variables, Mridula Garg

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The aim of the present paper is to study the distribution of the mixed sum of two random variables. Here we establish a theorem which gives the probability density function (pdf) of sum of doubly infinite and finite independent random variables. The distribution of the infinite and finite independent random variables is given in the form of corollary. As an application of these results we have obtained a distribution of sum of bilateral exponential variate with triangular, Rayleigh with uniform and Weibull with triangular variate. Some graphs of these distributions have also been given.

Establishment Of A Chebyshev-Dependent Inhomogeneous Second Order Differential Equation For The Applied Physics-Related Boubaker-Turki Polynomials, Micahel Dada, O. Bamidele Awojoyogbe, Maximilian Hasler, Karem B. Ben Mahmoud, Amine Bannour

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper proposes Chebyshev-dependent inhomogeneous second order differential equation for the m-Boubaker polynomials (or Boubaker-Turki polynomials). This differential equation is also presented as a guide to applied physics studies. A concrete example is given through an attempt to solve the Bloch NMR flow equation inside blood vessels.

The Evolution Of Reciprocity In Sizable Human Groups, Casey G. Rothschild Dec 2008

The Evolution Of Reciprocity In Sizable Human Groups, Casey G. Rothschild

Economics Faculty Scholarship

The scale and complexity of human cooperation is an important and unresolved evo- lutionary puzzle. This article uses the finitely repeated n person Prisoners’ Dilemma game to illustrate how sapience can greatly enhance group-selection effects and lead to the evolutionary stability of cooperation in large groups. This affords a simple and direct explanation of the human “exception.”

Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training Faculty Publications

Previous research indicates that ultramarathon exercise can result in blood oxidative stress. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the efficacy of oral supplementation with quercetin, a naturally occurring compound with known antioxidant properties, as a potential countermeasure against blood oxidative stress during an ultramarathon competition. In double-blind fashion, 63 participants received either oral quercetin (250 mg, 4×/day; 1,000 mg/day total) or quercetin-free supplements 3 weeks before and during the 160-km Western States Endurance Run. Blood drawn before and immediately after (quercetin finishers n = 18, quercetin-free finishers n = 21) the event was analyzed for changes in blood …
