Conference Proceedings

Industrial sensing, monitoring and automation offer a lucrative application domain for networking and communications. Wired sensor networks have traditionally been used for these applications because such networks adequately meet two vital requirements, i.e., low latency and high reliability, needed for an industrial deployment. Wired sensor networks, however, are not very cost effective due to higher components’ cost. These networks also lack the flexibility needed for subsequent topological changes. Wireless sensor networks (WSN), on the other hand, are less expensive and offer high degree of flexibility. Wireless networks, therefore, can offer an attractive and viable solution for industrial sensing and automation. …

The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters play an important role as a barrier to protect cells from the accumulation of toxic xenobiotics and metabolites due to their ability to translocate a wide array of compounds across lipid bilayers. However, many ABC transporters, especially the ones localized in the intracellular organelles, are involved in critical biological processes such as antigen presentation. The core unit of ABC transporters contains two functional domains: the membrane spanning domain (MSD) and the nucleotide binding domain. The full transporters contain two of these units in tandem in a single polypeptide, whereas the half transporters only contain one …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Modern computing power has made it possible to reconstruct low-resolution, three-dimensional shapes from solution small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data on biomolecules without a priori knowledge of the structure. In conjunction with rapid mixing techniques, SAXS has been applied to time resolve conformational changes accompanying important biological processes, such as biomolecular folding. In response to the widespread interest in SAXS reconstructions, their value in conjunction with such time-resolved data has been examined. The group I intron from Tetrahymena thermophila and its P4–P6 subdomain are ideal model systems for investigation owing to extensive previous studies, including crystal structures. The goal of this …
