The Washington Naval Conference and the Far Eastern Affairs Conference of 1922 occurred concurrently and were the first major post-World War I conferences to address post-war issues. The Washington Naval Conference sought to avoid the outbreak of future hostilities by reducing the total tonnage of capital ships in each signatory nation’s fleet to only that of a defensive force. The Far Eastern Affairs Conference sought to modify and modernize the relations of its signatories in China to create stability by removing many of potential sources of future conflicts due to conflicted diplomatic privileges. In this paper a method of enhancing the realism of certain computer game types, particularly First Person Shooter games, is explored by attempting to include intelligent neutral background characters to the game environment. This method also requires that the inclusion of these background characters will not adversely affect the performance of a game by drastically increasing the computational complexity of the game. A simulation was created to show how this can be done using a group of intelligent agents based in a simulated world, and a simplified system of norms designed to influence the agents’ behavior. This article details some of the real world challenges facing the legal processes in the United States as information storage and retrieval technology outstrips legal procedures for dealing with these processes. Describing a “perfect storm” of litigation needs, technology and information concerns, he describes the continuing stumbling blocks in dealing effectively with an information world which is becoming increasingly digital, on more consumer devices that may make the protection and discovery of such information increasingly problematic.

J. Edgar Hoover fought domestic communism in the 1940s with illegal investigative methods and by recommending a procedure of guilt by association to HUAC. The debate over illegal surveillance in the 1940s to protect national security reflects the on‐going tensions between national security and civil liberties. This essay explores how in times of national security crises, concerns often exist about civil liberties violations in the United States.

In this ethnography that documents the folk nature of popular culture, Mickey Weems applies interdisciplinary interpretation to a subject that demands such a breakdown of intellectual boundaries. The Circuit, an expression of gay culture, comprises large dance events—gatherings, celebrations, communions, festivals. Music and dance drive complex, shared performances—electronic house music played by professional DJs and mass ecstatic dancing that engenders communitas. Other performances, from drag queens and concerts to contests, theatrics, and the individual display of muscular bodies are part of the festivities.

Researchers focusing on diasporic contexts face the difficult task of wearing their “academic hats” while at the same time building meaningful relationships with immigrant communities. This is no more apparent (and important) than with “non-community” (i.e. outsider) researchers. Here diasporic communities, having already experienced the trauma of forced migration, must see the academic researcher as one they can trust and who is invested in their long-term well being. In this paper I address methodological and philosophical concerns related to the insider-outsider researcher distinction and to conducting research as an “outsider.” The principle aims of the paper are to critically examine …

Microfluidic platforms for magnetic cell separation were developed and investigated for isolation of magnetic particles and magnetically tagged cells from a fluidic sample. Two types of magnetic separation platforms were considered: an Isodynamic Open Gradient Magnetic Sorter (OGMS) and a multistage bio-ferrograph. Miniaturized magnets were designed using magnetostatic simulation software, microfluidic channels were fabricated using microfabrication technology and magnetic separation was investigated using video microscopy and digital image processing. The isodynamic OGMS consisted of an external magnetic circuit and a microfabricated channel (biochip) with embedded magnetic elements. Recently, polymerization science has assumed an increasing relevance in many applications, including orthopedic and dental biomaterials. Current technologies are based on the use of photochemically reactive systems, which are suited to absorb light to produce primary radical species capable of initiating polymerization. Acylphosphine oxides and acylphosphonates are known to be very effective photoinitiators for various unsaturated polymeric systems. The high reactivity observed was ascribed to the phosphinyl and phosphinoyl radicals generated. Because of the poor qualities of other initiators, we examined new routes to synthesize acylphosphine oxide initiators to achieve compatibility with aqueous media and improved performance.
