A close relationship between literature and film is nothing new. For over 100 years, turning mental pictures into visual images has captivated filmmakers and viewers alike, allowing for further expression, interpretation, and sometimes understanding of the original text. Even the theatrical works of William Shakespeare have been adapted onto film, relocating the action from stage to screen and bringing his art to larger audiences than ever before. With the technology of film, the conventions of Elizabethan theatre are challenged as filmmakers choose to modify or relocate the action of the plot. But is this acceptable?

Much has been written about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, however, an element often overlooked in the history of these events is the way in which an official narrative of them was created in the minds of the American public. This paper examines how this official narrative and consequently memory of the bombings was formed. To do this newspaper articles were analyzed from the first published reports of the bombings in the American press up to recent stories regarding the bombings. Through the analysis of these reports it becomes clear that American memory of the bombings have three …

This paper proposes that a cross-tribal sense of belonging, similar to modern conceptions of racism, facilitated the formation of multi-ethnic communities among the Indian populations living to the west of Hudson’s Bay in the eighteenth century.

Based upon observations made over the course of a century by employees of the Hudson’s Bay Company regarding the attitudes held by their Native American trading partners towards the region’s Inuit populations, this paper concludes that Indians living to the west of Hudson’s Bay in the eighteenth century constructed an inclusive trans-Indian sense of identity based, at least in part, on the exclusion of …

Sufi poetry of the Abbasid Caliphate (750-1258 CE/132-655 AH) exhibited a particular penchant for highlighting the relationship between humankind and God with homoerotic language. While the homoerotic nature of Sufi poetry has received considerable scholarly attention, the ritual expression of such literature has not. The ritual of sama was a practice that occurred in the Sufi institutions and incorporated various elements of the poetry examined. By listening to the poetry, in the form of song and often with accompanying instrumentation, the mystics would experience transient moments of altered state experiences, usually interpreted as moments of union with God.

Vaccines for conferring immunity in mammals to infective pathogens are provided, as well as vectors and methods for plastid transformation of plants to produce protective antigens and vaccines for oral delivery. The invention further provides transformed plastids having the ability to survive selection in both the light and the dark, at different developmental stages by using genes coding for two different enzymes capable of detoxifying the same selectable marker, driven by regulatory signals that are functional in proplastids as well as in mature chloroplasts. This thesis examines Black Power in Jamaica, Trinidad, and The Bahamas, comparing and contrasting the ability of the movements to garner the support of the people in these different locales. The primary focus of this work is the Caribbean Black Power movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Several Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria have evolved a complex protein secretion system termed the Type Three Secretion System (TTSS) to deliver bacterial effector proteins into host cells that then modulate host cellular functions. These bacterial devices are evolutionarily related to the flagellar apparatus. Although the TTSSs are substantially conserved among different species, the effector molecules they deliver are species unique. There exist three human pathogenic Yersiniae. Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis cause self-limiting gastro-enteric diseases and infect mesenteric lymph nodes, while Yersinia pestis is transmitted by fleas and can be aerosolized, causing the lethal disease known as plague (also know …

Seasonal coral bleaching has been observed and studied in tropical waters around the world. These studies have demonstrated that there is a strong correlation between anomalously elevated sea water temperature and coral bleaching events, however few studies have been performed on healthy corals during periods of normal sea water temperature fluctuation. Visible changes of pigmentation were used as a proxy measure of dinoflagellate densities in the maze coral Meandrina meandrites inhabiting the Gulfstream reef off Boynton Beach, Florida on 15 observations from mid-August 2007 to mid-January 2008. A new porphyrin dendrimer was synthesized and characterized by reacting 4,4’,4’’,4’’’-(Porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakis(benzoic acid) with a generation two (G2) dendrimer. It has been through a couple of revisions since that original assignment, but that inspiration led me to create this pretty, melancholy poem which describes something abrupt and harsh; namely, a rape.
