Abstract
After France was defeated by the Germans in June 1940, several politicians of the Third Republic formed a new government under Marshal Philippe PŽtain in Vichy. The men in the new regime immediately began to make social and political changes which, in their mind, were long overdue. They believed that they could negotiate with the occupation officials in the North and maintain France's sovereignty, at least in the 'free' Southern zone. They also believed, as did a large part of the French people, that the inadequacies of the republican system had lost France the war. It had certainly been …

Parishioners and staff are all integral parts of the body of Christ. As sin is part of all relationships it is also true that there is help and hope in the form of a relationship with Jesus. Darfur: Rainfall And Conflict, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Data on rainfall patterns only weakly corroborate the claim that climate change explains the Darfur conflict that began in 2003 and has claimed more than 200,000 lives and displaced more than two million persons. Rainfall in Darfur did not decline significantly in the years prior to the eruption of major conflict in 2003; rainfall exhibited a flat trend in the thirty-years preceding the conflict (1972-2002). The rainfall evidence suggests instead a break around 1971. Rainfall is basically stationary over the pre- and post-1971 sub-periods. The break is larger for the more northerly rainfall stations, and is less noticeable for En …

It is important to remember that the categories of medieval performance were established far removed from their period in history. As a genre, the morality play includes a wide diversity of time, geography, content and performance styles. Such disparities have made it difficult to develop a comprehensive definition, without which comparisons between works cannot be consistent. As scholarship continues to explore these works in context of their performance, it becomes increasingly important to identify which performance styles best inform their production. The purpose of this study was to begin the effort to build a theoretical foundation for homeland security policy by analyzing the 1993 World Trade Center terrorist attack using multiple frame analysis (MFA). MFA consisted of three conceptual lenses: (I)-Homeland Security as a Criminal Justice Problem/Terrorism as Crime, (II)-Homeland Security as a International Relations Problem/Terrorism as War, and (III)-Homeland Security as an Organization Design Problem/Terrorism as a Network. These lenses were applied to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing using a case study methodology, thus creating a framework to analyze a singular critical event from multiple perspectives.

American participation in the First World War developed slowly throughout 1917 to a mighty torrent during the last six months of the war. United States participation undoubtedly helped not only repel but to stop all German assaults on the Western Front: it had substantially aided in defeating Imperial Germany.

Through primary and secondary sources a timeline, as well as a few of the more significant events, has been established following the United States' involvement in the war. The Selection For Sedentary Settlement Patterns In East-Central Mississippi, Weston Everett Baconchulte

The evolution of sedentariness in east-central Mississippi seems to follow specific patterns when both time and space are accounted for. Prehistoric pottery counts and frequencies from sites located throughout east-central Mississippi were examined in order to better understand settlement patterns. This study combines data from both newly recorded and previously recorded sites. These data are analyzed using frequency seriation and correspondence analysis, thus allowing the investigation of settlement patterns through both space and time. The results are used to address competing hypotheses concerning a gradual spread of sedentary settlement versus a very rapid adoption of sedentariness. The main factors organizing …

Pearl Harbor and 9/11 have been compared together since the 9/11 attacks. This thesis analyzes the two from the viewpoints of the politicians, the media, and finally the effects on culture. Sources were gathered from newspapers, books, journal articles, government resources, and internet web sites. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 are similar on the surface, but upon looking into further circumstances, dissimilarities are found between the two events. With sixty years between the two events the outcome and delayed reactions are different, but the initial response is similar.

An Investigation Of Paraoxonase-1 Activities In The Serum Of Southerners As Related To Gender And Race, Kimberly Ann Davis

Paraoxonase-1 (PON1) has an anti-oxidative function in preventing the formation of oxidized lipoproteins (LDL and HDL) and hydrolyzing the active metabolites of some organophosphate insecticides (e.g., paraoxon and diazoxon) and other non-physiological substrates. PON1Q192R affects PON1 hydrolytic activity and its protective role against oxidative stress, thereby influencing susceptibility to cardiovascular disease among individuals. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of race, gender, and age on PON1 activities and PON1192 genotypes in Caucasian and African American Southerners. This dissertation examines and reconstructs the lives of fugitive slaves who used the maritime industries in New York, Philadelphia and Newport to achieve freedom. It focuses on slaves during the period between 1713, the end of Queen Anne’s War, and 1783, the end of the American Revolution. While the study’s primary focus is on slavery in three port cities, it employs a broad geographic approach to consider how enslaved individuals in rural areas surrounding New York, Philadelphia and Newport, as well as slaves in more distant regions, used the maritime industry in northern port cities to escape slavery. Security Policy, State Power, And Professional Resistance: Libraries And The Usa Patriot Act, Ahna Minge

Political Science Honors Projects

Historically, national emergencies have prompted the US government to limit private rights in the interest of security. The librarian profession opposed such limitations in the USA PATRIOT Act because it contradicted their professional values. This paper examines how professional identity affects the interaction between librarians and the law. I gathered evidence through in-depth interviews with Twin Cities librarians. The paper concludes that librarian practices stemming from professional values hinder the full implementation of national security policy but do not lead to absolute defiance. This project illuminates the importance of professional groups as sources of private resistance to national security policy.
