Adapting Information Operations To A Changing World: Future Options For The United States Government, Edwin L. Armistead

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In 1998, the Department of Defense in the United States released the first of a series of seminal policies on Information Operations (IO). Entitled Joint Publication 3-13, this instruction laid out for the first time, in an unclassified format, how the American military forces could utilise this particular element of power. As a relative newly defined activity, this publication proposed to revolutionise the manner in which warfare, diplomacy, business and a number of other areas are conducted. However, this radical transformation in the United States government with regard to IQ has not occurred over the last decade and a significant …

A Marginal Tax: The New Franchise Tax In Texas Comment., David A. Vanderhider Jan 2008

A Marginal Tax: The New Franchise Tax In Texas Comment., David A. Vanderhider

St. Mary's Law Journal

Taxation has long been a point of contention for both individuals and businesses. Primarily, taxation serves as a convenient and calculated method of allocating precious resources to areas in need. Although many states use property and income taxes as the preferred methods for funding these programs, Texas has a constitutional restriction on state taxation of individuals’ incomes. This means Texas has largely relied on property and business taxes to fund these programs. In 1991, while trying to avoid unconstitutional taxes on individuals’ incomes, the Texas Legislature adopted a franchise tax which taxed Texas businesses according to their capital. In 2006, …

Deploying A Context Aware Smart Classroom, Ciaran O'Driscoll, Mohan Mithileash, Fredrick Mtenzi, Bing Wu

Conference papers

Context aware environments respond in a pseudo-intelligent manner depending on the identity of occupants, particular location, desired activity and specific time. The Context Aware Smart Classroom (CASC) is a classroom that responds to lecturers and student groups based on preset policies and the lecture timetable. The pervasive nature of personal mobile devices permits the investigation of developing low-cost location and identification systems that support development of a smart classroom. Material used during the teaching activity is distributed to students based on students’ policies using WLAN, LAN or email. The smart classroom CASC uses a central scheduling system to determine the …

Radically American: John Dos Passos, Culture And Politics, Alice Béja Jan 2008

Radically American: John Dos Passos, Culture And Politics, Alice Béja

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This essay takes the well-known and near-canonical figure of John Dos Passos, considering his own claims to a form of radicalism independent of political parties and their perceived ideological rigidity. Drawing upon documentary and non-fiction writings, the essay evaluates the writer’s negotiations of radicalism within the constraints of a so-called national political character.

L'America: Woman, Artist, Landscape - Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keeffe And Emily Carr, Painters As Theorists Of The National Imaginary, Paula Rabinowitz

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Visual artists are open to assessment as progressive public intellectuals. Drawing on three case studies – Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe and Emily Carr – this essay considers the strategies of rhetoric and (self)-representation used to position the artist as a personification of a range of political and social identities, including historically specific forms of nationalism.

Morris Ernst's Troubled Legacy, Brett Gary

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Examining the contradictory life of the important legal activist Morris Ernst, this essay repositions its subject as one of the most significant public intellectuals of the 1920s and 1930s. Yet the intellectual independence demonstrated by Ernst is shown to have been compromised through his post-war collaboration with the F.B.I.

"God Sent Me To Piss The World Off": Eminem, 'Psycho'-Machia, And The Morality Vice, James Keller Jan 2008

"God Sent Me To Piss The World Off": Eminem, 'Psycho'-Machia, And The Morality Vice, James Keller

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The term psychomachia, drawn from the title of Prudentius' fourth century work, dramatizes the "struggle for the soul of man by the personified forces of good and evil" (Bevington 117). In morality plays such as The Castle of Perseverance (circa 1400-1425), the embodiments of vice and virtue engage in a mock military conflict to win the allegiance of humanity. However, the difficulties of staging mock battles in limited space with a limited cast resulted in the evolution of the psychomachia intrigue plot where the figure of wickedness tempts the representation of humanity to embrace evil and reject …

The Trial Of Travis Bickle, New York Law School Jan 2008

The Trial Of Travis Bickle, New York Law School

Media Center

Join us for an evening of entertainment and be a jury member at The Trial of Travis Bickle. In 1976, the world of cinema changed when a troubling psycho-drama bled its way across America's movie screens. Still famous today, Robert De Niro's portrayal of an armed Travis Bickle rehearsing threats in front of a mirror-"You talkin' to me?"-gives us a real glimpse into an off-kilter mind. This title character of Martin Scorsese's classic film Taxi Driver is the focus of our trial. In the film, after killing three men and emancipating an adolescent girl from prostitution, Travis is heralded as …

Roe V. Wade And Its Progency: The Impact Of State Legislative And Judicial Actions On Abortion Rates In Five States, Maria Klimash Jan 2008

Roe V. Wade And Its Progency: The Impact Of State Legislative And Judicial Actions On Abortion Rates In Five States, Maria Klimash

LSU Master's Theses

By looking at the courts and legislatures as agents of social change, this study seeks to assess the impact of judicial decisions in a particularly contentious area, the right to bodily privacy. Specifically, I seek to understand the competing effects of state supreme court decisions and state statutes on the consumers of their public policy choices. Past studies have found conflicting results concerning the impact of court decisions. Literature assessing the effect of legislation finds that statutes, which are specific in nature, engender significant effects. For this study I focus specifically on court decisions and legislation that are concerned with …

Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

The Population Council, with financial support from UNFPA, provided technical assistance to the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, India in implementing a quality assurance (QA) program and helped its institutionalization in the district level of health management. An analysis of all the facilities covered as of December 2007 revealed substantial gaps in the infrastructure and human resources available to provide good-quality services, as well as adherence to standards for providing the services. To build the capacity to undertake QA visits, the Population Council and state authorities organized a series of events to orient and train state and district officials, facility-level …
