A Woman’S Right To Be Spanked: Testing The Limits Of Tolerance Of S/M In The Socio-Legal Imaginary, Ummni Khan Jan 2008

A Woman’S Right To Be Spanked: Testing The Limits Of Tolerance Of S/M In The Socio-Legal Imaginary, Ummni Khan

Studio for Law and Culture

What conditions must be in place for s/m sexuality to be tolerated in law and culture? In this article, I consider the film Secretary as a lens to explore the imaginative limits of our socio-legal culture regarding sadomasochism. In Part One, I compare Secretary to the film 9 ½ weeks. I deconstruct the narrative and aesthetic components of the two films that uphold their contrasting normative visions, arguing that Secretary did indeed chart new ground for the sadomasochist sexual subject. Yet, a close discursive analysis reveals that the narrative relied upon other hegemonies to make the s/m couple acceptable and …

Celebrities: Who They Are, How They Gain Popularity, And Why Society Is So Fascinated With Them And Their Court Cases, Kristina Gregory Jan 2008

Celebrities: Who They Are, How They Gain Popularity, And Why Society Is So Fascinated With Them And Their Court Cases, Kristina Gregory

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This paper is an exploration of celebrity justice. Many different definitions of the term celebrity exist, as do many different views on what exactly constitutes celebrity status and the role those of this status plays in society. Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of publicity regarding celebrities are disputed. Having celebrity status can both be beneficial and detrimental to the welfare of the celebrity. Studies show that when involved in a trial, publicity can actually harm the celebrity because of the bias the media can create in the mind of the public. This pretrial publicity leads to more convictions for celebrity …

Review Of Illicit Drug Use Among Indigenous Peoples, Michelle Catto, Neil Thomson Jan 2008

Review Of Illicit Drug Use Among Indigenous Peoples, Michelle Catto, Neil Thomson

Research outputs pre 2011

Drug misuse has significant impacts on families and communities and is a major concern for Australia. The misuse of licit drugs (such as alcohol and tobacco) continues to have the most significant negative impacts, but the use of illicit drugs is also a contributing factor in ill-health, injuries, violence and criminal behaviour, workplace problems and the disruption of family, community and the broader society. The greater level of substance misuse in the Indigenous population reflects the history of dispossession and oppression of Indigenous people; their entrenched social and economic marginalisation requires holistic and well-funded strategies to address the underlying social …

Works, Recordings, Performances: Classical, Rock, Jazz, Andrew Kania Jan 2008

Works, Recordings, Performances: Classical, Rock, Jazz, Andrew Kania

Philosophy Faculty Research

In this essay, I undertake a comparative study of the ontologies of three quite distinct Western musical traditions – classical, rock, and jazz – approached from the unusual angle of their recordings. By the ‘ontology’ of a tradition I mean simply the kinds of things there are in that tradition and the relations that hold between them. A study of this scope is bound to leave many questions unanswered when restricted to this length. The ontology of classical music has been debated in the analytic tradition for close to half a century, and there has been a growing interest in …

The Dialectics Of Hope: Marxism And Method In The Cultural Front, Charles D. Cunningham Jan 2008

The Dialectics Of Hope: Marxism And Method In The Cultural Front, Charles D. Cunningham

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The tenth anniversary of Michael Denning's The Cultural Front: The Laboring of American Culture in the Twentieth Century is a fitting occasion to revisit a work posing questions that remain fresh today and probably will as long as there is a need to analyze the relationship between dissident cultural movements and a non-egalitarian social order. Encyclopedic in scope, the book is a study of the "cultural production" of the Popular Front of the 1930s and 40s that moves eruditely through a wide range of objects, including proletarian literature, popular music, theater, film, cartoons, and cultural theory. Denning makes …

Snyc, Freedomways, And The Influence Of The Popular Front In The South On The Black Arts Movement, James Smethurst

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Tracing out cultural and political affiliations that persisted despite the effort of the repressive state apparatus, this essay examines the oft-neglected organizational and cultural connections between the Old Left and the new. Arguing that the work of Popular Front artists and activists in the South prefigured Black Arts literature and visual arts notions of how artists should relate to the community that marked, the paper recasts the continuities between the 1930s and 1960s.

Constructing Country: Fakery And 'Strictly American' Music [Part 2], Kevin Yuill Jan 2008

Constructing Country: Fakery And 'Strictly American' Music [Part 2], Kevin Yuill

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Having identified the strands that would later make up country music, we now consider the further development of the search for a national music. It coincided with the growing romantic attachment of certain members of the elite to a racialized Anglo-Saxon American "folk" whose culture they re-imagined, shorn of any uncouth or labor-related themes, in contrast to more urban, black or immigrant cultures. The English proselytiser for Morris dancing, Cecil Sharp, exceeded the efforts of others in highlighting the music of the Appalachians as particularly Anglo-Saxon and thus worthy of attention. After World War I in particular, an …

To Keep You Is No Gain, To Destroy You Is No Loss : A Study Of The Historical And Behavioral Roots Of Cambodian Genocide Under Democratic Kampuchea, Jennifer Croslow Jan 2008

To Keep You Is No Gain, To Destroy You Is No Loss : A Study Of The Historical And Behavioral Roots Of Cambodian Genocide Under Democratic Kampuchea, Jennifer Croslow

Honors Capstones

This essay is a study on totalitarianism and genocide through the lens of historical manipulation and cultural behavior unique to Cambodia (later called Democratic Kampuchea under the Khmer Rouge). The purpose is to describe the cause and effect that colonial machinations and native social behaviors had on the development and perpetuation of the Khmer Rouge. The study is limited by time and research capabilities, as I do not yet speak, read, or write Khmer or Vietnamese. Because the topic spans over two-hundred years, the research focuses on the two endpoints of colonialism and totalitarianism and neglects the time continuum in-between. …

The Cultural Commons: An Interview With Michael Denning, Victor Cohen Jan 2008

The Cultural Commons: An Interview With Michael Denning, Victor Cohen

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Michael Denning is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of American Studies at Yale University. His first two books, Cover Stories: Narrative and Ideology in the British Spy Thriller (Routledge, 1987) and Mechanic Accents: Dime Novels and Working Class Culture (Verso, 1987), examined the politics of popular fiction. He followed them up with The Cultural Front: Laboring of American Culture in the Twentieth Century (Verso, 1998), which has become the encyclopedic study of the culture of the American Popular Front. Denning's most recent work, Culture in an Age of Three Worlds (Verso, 2004), analyses the rise and fall of American …

Literature And Performance Of Music For Double Bass And Tape, Jeremy C. Baguyos Jan 2008

Literature And Performance Of Music For Double Bass And Tape, Jeremy C. Baguyos

Music Faculty Publications

Electroacoustic music for double bass can be classified into the following two types of repertoire: real-time/interactive computer music or tape music. Real-time/interactive computer music is the newer of the two types and involves the algorithmic generation of electronic sounds in live performance. Pre-recorded electronic sounds are usually avoided, and instead, the sound of live input is used as the source material for electronic sounds. A computer is used for capture, processing and synthesis, and the software is usually written in the MAX/MSP environment. The second category, tape music, is the older of the two types of electroacoustic music for the …
