At The Hands Of Becky Sharp: (In)Visible Manipulation And Vanity Fair, Peter J. Capuano Jan 2008

At The Hands Of Becky Sharp: (In)Visible Manipulation And Vanity Fair, Peter J. Capuano

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Victorian sartorial convention allowed for the routine inspection of only two body parts: the head and the hands. While it is well-documented that the perceptual codes of phrenology and physiognomy shaped psychological, aesthetic and fictional conventions by the middle of the nineteenth century, the hand has attracted relatively little attention. One would be hard-pressed, for example, to identify a critic of Vanity Fair who does not comment on the relationship between Becky Sharp's facial expressions and the pervasiveness of her manipulative temperament. However, even within the heavily sifted topic of "manipulation" in Vanity Fair, critics have overlooked the extent …

Supporting Student Learning With Digital Audio: A Low-Tech Approach, Stuart Garner Jan 2008

Supporting Student Learning With Digital Audio: A Low-Tech Approach, Stuart Garner

EDU-COM International Conference

Advances in technology have made the use of digitized audio, often in the form of podcasts, more popular in recent years. The MP3 compression file format for such audio has become a defacto standard and the associated MP3 players are now ubiquitous. In the domain of eLearning, audio id perceived as a low-tech approach when compared with video technology. However such an approach can be useful as firstly, such audios can support mLearning as they can be listened to anywhere, and secondly, they are easy to produce for technology challenged instructors. This paper uses a teaching and learning framework as …

Artisans And The Marketing Of Ethnicity: Globalization, Indigenous Identity And Nobility Principle In Micro-Enterprise Development, Robin M. Chandler Jan 2008

Artisans And The Marketing Of Ethnicity: Globalization, Indigenous Identity And Nobility Principle In Micro-Enterprise Development, Robin M. Chandler

Ethnic Studies Review

As a constructed category of human difference, 'ethnicity' has given way to 'culture' in its shared genealogy in the new millennium. Public knowledge about such phenomena as 'ethnic cleansing', debates on immigration, and the use of ethnicity as both a dependent and independent variable in research and policy are central realities in the domestic and foreign policies of many nations. The social psychology of group affiliation, nationalism, and the use of ethnicity (as well as gender) in workplace diversity, or the deployment of ethnicity in electoral politics continues to perplex and complicate human social interaction.

Get Ready Cause Here They Come: A Look At Problems On The Horizon For Authorship And Termination Rights In Sound Recordings, Abbott Marie Jones Jan 2008

Get Ready Cause Here They Come: A Look At Problems On The Horizon For Authorship And Termination Rights In Sound Recordings, Abbott Marie Jones

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Record companies have long included language in standard recording contracts declaring all sound recordings made by the artist works made for hire. Contractual provisions alone, however, will not be enough to confer work-for-hire status on sound recordings. Thus, record companies also require that artists assign some or all of their copyrights in the recordings to the record company. Beginning in 2013, authors of sound recordings will have the opportunity to exercise their right to terminate and renegotiate those assignments, their bargaining power increased by years of success in the music industry. Whether sound recordings will in fact be considered works …

Let's Perform: Making Literature Education Alive, H. Abdul Halim Jan 2008

Let's Perform: Making Literature Education Alive, H. Abdul Halim

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The benefits of using performance in literature education are well documented. However, many teachers are hesitant to implement them in their classrooms. Commonly, this is because these teachers feel they don't know enough about how to fairly assess a student's performance (Airasian, 1994). This paper delineates and discusses strategies for making literary texts accessible by appealing to the learner's imagination, as well as to develop insights related to the use of performance in literature education. The aim is to go beyond the choice of handy, traditional theatre scripts of monologues and to make any genre of literature more "dramatic" by …

Accommodating Respectful Religious Expression In The Workplace, Nantiya Ruan Jan 2008

Accommodating Respectful Religious Expression In The Workplace, Nantiya Ruan

Scholarly Works

This Article makes the case for judicial recognition of respectful religious expression in the workplace as more consistent with the Court's Establishment Clause jurisprudence and also more true to the legislative intent of the religious accommodation provisions of Title VII. Respectful religious pluralism in the workplace should become the norm through judicial requirements of best practices in the workplace. Such a view should be wholly supported by the majority of the Justices because it is consistent with their expressed views, in the Establishment Clause case law, that religion fosters moral good and that in a pluralistic society religious expression cannot …

Movie Making: The Integration Of Art And Business, Jennifer Rae Sanderson Jan 2008

Movie Making: The Integration Of Art And Business, Jennifer Rae Sanderson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

I am enrolled in two very different master programs: The Creative Pulse and Media Arts. Some questioned the load of working toward both graduate degrees simultaneously. Fortunately the programs married each other well and one aided the other. Skills adopted in both were critical to the project foot printed in this paper. Both degrees had a focus in art but The Creative Pulse combined interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences with leadership taught in groups that changed the way I processed information. We were challenged to use risk and rigor in all endeavors. This was not a suggestion but mandatory. Intense group …

Cinema's Green Is Gold: The Commodification Of Irishness In Film, Erika Noelle Mann Jan 2008

Cinema's Green Is Gold: The Commodification Of Irishness In Film, Erika Noelle Mann

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis is concerned with the manners in which Irishness has become highly desirable and commodified, and the manifestations that commodification has taken in Irish film. In recognition that the Irish American diaspora holds a special regard for Irishness, I will explore reasons for the allure of Irishness for Irish Americans and how that allure contributes to commodification. Chiefly among these reasons are Irishness’ desirability as a white ethnicity and its alignment with a family values based morality. Irishness also has strong appeal for the Irish diaspora with its ties to a land that offers a welcoming “authentic” homeland and …

Around The World And Back: A Discovery In India, Charlie L. Gaare Jan 2008

Around The World And Back: A Discovery In India, Charlie L. Gaare

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The impetus for my journey was the desire to learn more about another culture, and pursue the idea of the old cliché: be the change I wanted to see in the world. This journey fulfilled the requirements of the project in multiple ways. It was a major risk to travel to another country with a language barrier on my own. The amount of work it took to prepare for the trip and face the challenges of the experience itself was very labor intensive. I had to do this because I needed to see that I could make a difference. I …

Dressing The Girl/Playing The Boy: Twelfth Night Learns Soccer On The Set Of She's The Man, L Monique Pittman Jan 2008

Dressing The Girl/Playing The Boy: Twelfth Night Learns Soccer On The Set Of She's The Man, L Monique Pittman

Faculty Publications

She’s The Man (2006), Andy Fickman’s adaptation of Twelfth Night, pulses with the Title Nine girl power that found cinematic voice and financial reward in Bend It Like Beckham (2002). Creating a pretext for the play’s gender swapping by entering the world of high school soccer, She’s the Man exploits conventions associated with the teen film genre–social group conformity and anxiety, crisis of identity, divorced parents, and ineffectual authority figures. Shakespeare’s cross-dressed heroine Viola becomes Viola Hastings played by Amanda Bynes, for whom this film serves as a star-vehicle showcasing Bynes’s comedic range. In some ways, the film intensifies the …

An Unaccountable Familiarity: A Dual Solution To The Problem Of Theft In Theatrical Productions, Jeannette Gunderson Jan 2008

An Unaccountable Familiarity: A Dual Solution To The Problem Of Theft In Theatrical Productions, Jeannette Gunderson

Seattle University Law Review

The production of a play as a whole is a derivative work of joint authorship; thus, copyright law should protect it. As a work of authorship, the sum of the design elements that form a production are protectable by copyright because the production is an original creation; while based on the text of the play, any given production is developed separately from the underlying work and merits its own protection.8 Because of the collaborative and interdependent nature of a production of a play, musical, or opera, the resulting combination of all aspects of design and direction should be protected as …

Getting It Right: A Multiple Case Study Of Exemplary Ari Schools, Anne Knowlton Jan 2008

Getting It Right: A Multiple Case Study Of Exemplary Ari Schools, Anne Knowlton

All ETDs from UAB

This qualitative multiple case study described the integration of the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) in three exemplary, yet very dissimilar elementary schools. Studies have shown that ARI has been successful in improving reading in Alabama schools. This study addressed the gap in the literature regarding exactly how this improvement has taken place. An urban school, a rural school, and a suburban school, which have reached an overall benchmark level of 90% or higher, were used for this study. Participants for the research included the principal, reading coach, and kindergarten through third grade teachers at each site. Data were collected in …

Aesthetic Response To Literature : Literature Circles And Response Activities, Jamie Lynn Mazurek Jan 2008

Aesthetic Response To Literature : Literature Circles And Response Activities, Jamie Lynn Mazurek

Honors Capstones

Aesthetic response to literature is a crucial goal of reading at any grade level. Through literature circles and response activities, students can begin to develop the necessary skills needed to create aesthetic reading experiences. This capstone includes a literature review highlighting the relevancy and benefits of literature circles and response activities have on intermediate students and their overall reading and aesthetic reading skills. Based on these findings, I implemented literature circles and aesthetic response activities into a fifth grade classroom in Rockford, Illinois. Six novels were used in small groups of five to six students. Through literature circles, aesthetic reading …
