Spectrality In Indigenous Women’S Cinema: Tracey Moffatt And Beck Cole, Gerry Turcotte Jan 2008

Spectrality In Indigenous Women’S Cinema: Tracey Moffatt And Beck Cole, Gerry Turcotte

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

This paper addresses two recent Aboriginal ghost stories produced by Aboriginal fi lm-makers Tracey Moffatt (beDevil) and Beck Cole (Plains Empty), in order to examine the relationship of these fi lms to a type of spectral rewriting of the Australian nation state. This paper examines the role of spectrality as a revisionist process that exorcizes, but also celebrates, the ghosts that underpin and/or undermine narratives of belonging and place and investigates the dynamic potential of Indigenous fi lm, not so much as a device that eradicates colonial encounters and their postcolonial legacy, but as texts that …

From T-Shirts To Teaching: May Public Schools Constitutionally Regulate Antihomosexual Speech?, Amanda L. Houle

Fordham Law Review

In applying the First Amendment in the public school context, courts are faced with the challenge of balancing the constitutional rights of students against the discretion of schools to control speech and conduct on school grounds. This Note focuses on the specific issue of public schools regulating antihomosexual speech. Evaluating the First Amendment rights of students expressing antihomosexual sentiment through private and school-sponsored mediums, this Note ultimately argues for a comprehensive standard permitting schools to regulate both private and school-sponsored student speech.

Mimosa 2008/2009, Jacksonville State University Jan 2008

Mimosa 2008/2009, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

Responses Of Study Abroad Students In Australia To Experience-Based Pedagogy In Sport Studies, Richard Light, Steve Georgakis Jan 2008

Responses Of Study Abroad Students In Australia To Experience-Based Pedagogy In Sport Studies, Richard Light, Steve Georgakis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper contributes to research on the scholarship of teaching in the physical education/sport studies fields by examining the responses of study abroad students from overseas studying in Australia to a unit of study in sport studies that placed the interpretation of experience as the centre of the learning process. It draws on research conducted at an Australian university over an 18-month period and involving 170 participants. The study focused on the ways in which student motivations, inclinations, expectations and prior experience interacted with experiences of living in Australia and the experience-based nature of the unit of study shaped their …

Reconciling Research, Teaching And Scholarship In Higher Education: An Examination Of Disciplinary Variation, The Curriculum And Learning, George Lueddeke Jan 2008

Reconciling Research, Teaching And Scholarship In Higher Education: An Examination Of Disciplinary Variation, The Curriculum And Learning, George Lueddeke

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Integrating research and teaching in research-intensive universities is an unresolved issue as we head into the 21st century. While studies conclude that the early years of the undergraduate curriculum should be more intellectually exciting, few universities have implemented approaches such as research-led learning. The conceptual shift that is necessary involves harmonisation of the collegial and developmental cultures. Of the forces that support convergence, focusing on the curriculum and learning design may offer the best potential for connecting students and academics to knowledge communities and linking the research, teaching and scholarship missions. An important element in transforming the research-intensive university is …

Taking Safety Seriously: Using Liberalism To Fight Pornography, John M. Kang Jan 2008

Taking Safety Seriously: Using Liberalism To Fight Pornography, John M. Kang

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Liberalism, as a jurisprudential principle, need not be pornography's indifferent observer or spineless sycophant; liberalism can be used to fight pornography. In this Article, the author proposes to illuminate what appears to be the most essential aspect of liberalism in its inviolable dedication to peace and safety. By drawing upon the work of the early liberals, the author argues that liberalism's most basic ethos is conceptually incompatible with pornography, as the latter celebrates an unjustified form of violence as its own end.

Address At Celebration For Kathleen And Bill Adams, Jonathan Ouvry Jan 2008

Address At Celebration For Kathleen And Bill Adams, Jonathan Ouvry

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know of the existence of the George Eliot Fellowship until 1980, which was of course the great year of the stone-laying in Westminster Abbey. I can't remember how it came to be known that one of George Henry Lewes's great-great-grandsons just happened, conveniently, to have an office next door to the Abbey, but then I suppose that that is one of the many secrets of Kathleen's success in her role as Secretary of the Fellowship - she was very good at finding out useful connections and unlikely information in the highways and byways …

Review Of The Cambridge Introduction To George Eliot, Nancy Henry Jan 2008

Review Of The Cambridge Introduction To George Eliot, Nancy Henry

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

This lively book is part of a new Cambridge University Press series already more than thirty titles strong, for 'readers who want to broaden their understanding of the books and authors they enjoy' - a mission statement which is quickly decoded: 'Ideal for students, teachers and lecturers'. The range of authors and topics included is canonical yet catholic, and not exclusively Anglophone: American authors are well represented along with English and Irish ones, there is a clutch of drama and theatre titles, Francophone literature and Derrida, postcolonial literatures and Modernism. The books are relatively short at about 60,000 words, and …

The Thirty-Sixth George Eliot Memorial Lecture, 2007: Scenes And After, Graham Handley Jan 2008

The Thirty-Sixth George Eliot Memorial Lecture, 2007: Scenes And After, Graham Handley

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The Folio Society's cosmetic edition of George Eliot's fiction, which was published in 1999, has no place on any spine of its seven-volume set for Scenes of Clerical Life. A search of the actual texts, however, reveals George Eliot's first published fiction bedded together with Silas Marner, the pair sharing a neat introduction by Jill Paton-Walsh. I pondered at the time if spine exclusion meant that Scenes was just too minor for remark, or whether, as is the way with publishers, getting things wrong can be ignored once the books are on the shelves or, as with the Folio edition, …

Another Structure Of Knowledge Is Possible: The Social Forum Process And Academia, Sherman Jan 2008

Another Structure Of Knowledge Is Possible: The Social Forum Process And Academia, Sherman

Societies Without Borders

The author highlights how the World Social Forum (WSF), the annual meeting held by members of the anti-globalization or alter-globalization movement, has unexpected consequences for epistemology. He considers the possibilities opened by the emergence of the social forum process for the reconstruction of the structures of knowledge. By structures of knowledge, he means following the disciplinary organization and hegemonic approaches since the late nineteenth century in the social sciences.
