Baroque Glances At Society: The Appropriation Of Decoupage, The Long Take And Depth Of Field Photography In The Early Films By J.A. Bardem., Jesús Urda

Conference Papers

Bardem is often described as a Spanish Neorealist, as a director who followed closely the cinema of Italian directors like Fellini, Pietro Germi, Visconti and of course the early Antonioni. Except for Cómicos (1954), inspired by the reading of Joseph L. Mankievicz’s All About Eve (1950) all the films he made during the 1950s are inspired by an Italian source: Death of a Cyclist (1955) was inspired by Antonioni’s Cronnica di un Amore/Story of a Love Affair (1951); Calle Mayor (1956), shares similarities in plot and concept with Fellini’s I Vitelloni (1953); La Venganza (1957) with Pietro Germi’s Il Camino …

Active Servicewomen In World War Ii: Helping To Create A New American Culture, Kristin Lynch Jan 2008

Active Servicewomen In World War Ii: Helping To Create A New American Culture, Kristin Lynch

Selected Student Research from 2008

The lives of most servicewomen during World War II were forever changed, culturally, psychologically, and socially, as a result of their experiences during the War; however, this modification of lives did not stop at individual women. Through examining three separate letter collections of three wartime women serving in very diverse situations, this project aims to focus on the changes through which these women progress, as gleaned from their writing, concerning the overall effect of the war on their lives, particularly relating to personal growth, cultural ramifications, and the overall impact each woman’s experience had in her life. More important, however, …

Natural Law - A Libertarian View, Anthony D'Amato Jan 2008

Natural Law - A Libertarian View, Anthony D'Amato

Faculty Working Papers

What follows from the following two propositions? Legal positivism views law as a command writ large. The commander is the person or group with the most power. Answer: this pernicious mind-set is responsible for our abandonment of personal liberty. For there can be no limit to the imagination and will power of the commander. The plenary jurisdiction of the commander paves the way for Big Government to move in and regulate every aspect of our lives and our privacy. The world wasn't always like this. Prior to the servility that positivism has induced, there was a now-forgotten secular natural law …

A New (And Better) Interpretation Of Holmes's Prediction Theory Of Law, Anthony D'Amato Jan 2008

A New (And Better) Interpretation Of Holmes's Prediction Theory Of Law, Anthony D'Amato

Faculty Working Papers

Holmes's famous 1897 theory that law is a prediction of what courts will do in fact slowly changed the way law schools taught law until, by the mid-1920s legal realism took over the curriculum. The legal realists argued that judges decide cases on all kinds of objective and subjective reasons including precedents. If law schools wanted to train future lawyers to be effective, they should be exposed to collateral subjects that might influence judges: law and society, law and literature, and so forth. But the standard interpretation has been a huge mistake. It treats law as analogous to weather forecasting: …

Long Form Improvisation - Creating Spontaneous Communities Through Collaborative Comedic Performance, Brad Fortier Jan 2008

Long Form Improvisation - Creating Spontaneous Communities Through Collaborative Comedic Performance, Brad Fortier

Dissertations and Theses

Improvisational theater can tell us much about the driving social and cultural forces behind collaboration and collective constructions of reality, as well as the sorts of behaviors and practices that bolster their efficacy. The collaboration of the performers on generating a comedic piece of theater spontaneously from audience suggestions in a long improvisation creates a sense of what Victor Turner called communitas for the performers. That phenomenon can create a larger sense of socio-emotional unity between the audience and performers. Turning an anthropological lens on comedy theater, this presentation explores the performer-audience dynamic and its impact on the success of …

Literature And The Passion Of Virtue, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2008

Literature And The Passion Of Virtue, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

There has always been a reasonable concern that passion constitutes a challenge to the ordeal of civility—that passion and pathology are close cousins if not twin siblings. But in a time and place where political correctness seems to be replacing moral sensibility and political biases are hawked as the morality of family values, it is reasonable to redirect attention to a world of literature in which morality has never been reduced to norms of social currency and where virtue still embodies a passion of commitment that aspires to excellence.

Playing In The Virtual Arena: Avatars, Publicity, And Identity Reconceptualized Through Virtual Worlds And Computer Games, Jon M. Garon Jan 2008

Playing In The Virtual Arena: Avatars, Publicity, And Identity Reconceptualized Through Virtual Worlds And Computer Games, Jon M. Garon

Faculty Scholarship

In many respects, the commercial and social interactions within virtual worlds are essentially the same as those interactions conducted face-to-face or over less engrossing technologies, however, the immersive nature of the virtual world redefines the nature of the experience. Because virtual worlds mimic their bricks-and-mortar counterparts, they exhibit commercial attributes unlike those of plays, television shows, or motion pictures. To the extent that there is commerce conducted within the medium, the historic separation between commercial conduct and expressive speech must be reconceptualized. In the first instance, such legal line drawing will necessarily be done with crude tools, so this article …
