Holocene Sediment Magnetic Properties Along A Transect From Isafjardardjup To Djupall, Northwest Iceland, Sarah M. Principato, J.T. Andrews, J. Hardardottir, J.S. Stoner Jan 2008

Holocene Sediment Magnetic Properties Along A Transect From Isafjardardjup To Djupall, Northwest Iceland, Sarah M. Principato, J.T. Andrews, J. Hardardottir, J.S. Stoner

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Holocene changes in terrestrial provenance and processes of sediment transport and deposition are tracked along a fjord-to-shelf transect adjacent to Vestfirdir, Iceland, using the magnetic properties ofmarine sediments.Magnetic susceptibility (MS) profiles of 10 cores (gravity and piston) were obtained onboard using a Bartington MS loop. Remanent magnetizations were measured at 1-cm intervals from u-channel samples taken from six cores on a cryogenic magnetometer. Between six and nine alternating field demagnetization steps were used to isolate the characteristic magnetization directions. The chronologies of the cores used in this study were determined from AMS14 C dates on mollusks and foraminifera and contrained …

Water Centrality For Water And Society, Ute Goeft Jan 2008

Water Centrality For Water And Society, Ute Goeft

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The current approach to water management in Western societies, including Australia, is based on allocating water between different users. Appropriate for commercial uses, this commodity view of water has proved difficult for the inclusion of environmental and social concerns. Issues, such as which aspects have precedence, how much water should be allocated to each and how to make trade-offs in cases of insufficient water, pose problems that are yet to be worked out. In addition, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the identification of environmental as well as social water needs. The latter has prompted the writing of this …

Interaction In Languages Other Than English Classes In Western Australian Primary And Secondary Schools: Theory, Practice And Perceptions, Rita Tognini Jan 2008

Interaction In Languages Other Than English Classes In Western Australian Primary And Secondary Schools: Theory, Practice And Perceptions, Rita Tognini

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This descriptive study investigated the interaction of teachers and learners in ten primary and secondary school languages other than English (LOTE) classes in Western Australia, with the aim of providing a detailed picture of its nature and patterns. Teachers' and learners' perceptions of this interaction were also examined as part of the study, through interviews conducted with them.

Less Realism : More Meaning : Evaluating Imagery For The Graphic Designer, Stuart Medley Jan 2008

Less Realism : More Meaning : Evaluating Imagery For The Graphic Designer, Stuart Medley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Typography' as a defining term has become interchangcable with 'graphic design'. and while font choice and application is seen as of paramount importance. image choice, virtually half , . of the communication design equation, is neglected in the theory and in pratice is left to the instinct of the designer. In this thesis I try to find approaches for graphic designers to understand image to the degree that they understand type. These approaches are tested through assignments for graphic design students and the results recorded and analysed. I seek to address the paradox that we are able to communicate more …

Towards Inclusive Standards, Michelle Pearce Jan 2008

Towards Inclusive Standards, Michelle Pearce

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The context of this study is the inclusion of students with dillabilities in secondary schools. The introduction of legislation in the United States and Australia has resulted in large numbers of students with disabilities being included in regular classes by subject teachers. Inclusion in secondary schools has proved especially challenging to teachers. Reviews and research highlight the need for teacher training. but do not specify the knowledge and skills that teachers need to become inclusive. It has been proposed that professional teaching standards have the potential to guide preservice and inservice training. Before standards could be assessed for their inclusivity, …
