Notes On The Multiple Facets Of Immigration Federalism, Rick Su Jan 2008

Notes On The Multiple Facets Of Immigration Federalism, Rick Su

Journal Articles

This symposium essay takes as its starting point the contestable position that some degree of immigration federalism is both constitutionally permissible and politically desirable. It suggests, however, that liberating the issue of immigration from the shadows of federal exclusivity does not necessarily tell us much about what a conceptual framework or legal jurisprudence of immigration federalism should or will actually be like. This is not solely a function of the difficulties inherent in incorporating principles of federalism into what is usually understood to be an exclusive federal field of immigration. Rather, it is also a consequence of the rifts and …

Jail For Juvenile Child Pornographers?: A Reply To Professor Leary, Stephen F. Smith Jan 2008

Jail For Juvenile Child Pornographers?: A Reply To Professor Leary, Stephen F. Smith

Journal Articles

Even though Professor Leary and I are united in the goal of protecting children against sexual exploitation, we part company on the proper societal response to the problem of self-produced child pornography. In my view, children who produce and distribute pornographic images of themselves ordinarily should not be regarded as proper objects of punishment. In this context, child protective services, backed up if necessary by the threat of criminal prosecution, is a much more appropriate way of reforming minors and protecting them against the serious dangers to which they expose themselves by creating and distributing pornographic images of themselves. A …

Dublin Core Metadata Harvested Through Oai-Pmh, Amy S. Jackson, Myung-Ja Han, Kurt Groetsch, Megan Mustafoff, Timothy W. Cole Jan 2008

Dublin Core Metadata Harvested Through Oai-Pmh, Amy S. Jackson, Myung-Ja Han, Kurt Groetsch, Megan Mustafoff, Timothy W. Cole

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The introduction in 2001 of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) increased interest in and awareness of metadata quality issues relevant to digital library interoperability and the use of harvested metadata to build "union catalogs" of digital information resources. Practitioners have offered wide-ranging advice to metadata authors and have suggested metrics useful for measuring the quality of shareable metadata. Is there evidence of changes in metadata practice in response to such advice and/or as a result of an increased awareness of the importance of metadata interoperability? This paper looks at metadata records created over a six-year period …

Social And Cultural Diversity In Distance Education, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Deborah Lapointe Jan 2008

Social And Cultural Diversity In Distance Education, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Deborah Lapointe

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

With the expansion of global telecommunication networks and the worldwide demand for higher education, distance education has the potential to reach out internationally to enhance learning for diverse learners and increase intercultural awareness and communication. By definition, distance education is borderless (Latchem, 2005), although differences in sociocultural contexts, values and expectations of diverse educational systems and learners may prove to be its greatest challenge (Hanna, 2000). While distance education programs proclaim an international focus with international content and learners, instructional design and methods frequently carry Eurocentric Western bias. Distance educators need to be sensitive to social, cultural and educational differences, …

Possible Groundwater Denitrification In The Decorah Formation (Middle Ordovician), Ashley Ignatius Jan 2008

Possible Groundwater Denitrification In The Decorah Formation (Middle Ordovician), Ashley Ignatius

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The Decorah Formation is a marine shale of Middle Ordovician age, overlain by an upper carbonate aquifer, that is contaminated with nitrate. The shale may contain electron donors for denitrification in the forms of organic carbon and sulfur minerals.

Three shallow monitoring wells were installed and sampled, and sediment samples collected and analyzed to determine if denitrification is occurring within the Decorah Formation. This study showed that electron donors were present, but in low abundance, suggesting that denitrification is occurring but does not play a significant role in the removal of nitrates at this site.

Prosthetic Valve Thrombosis Despite Seemingly-Adequate Anticoagulation: The Dangers Of Transient Lapses In Anticoagulation, Fahim H. Jafary, K. Hassan Jan 2008

Prosthetic Valve Thrombosis Despite Seemingly-Adequate Anticoagulation: The Dangers Of Transient Lapses In Anticoagulation, Fahim H. Jafary, K. Hassan

Section of Cardiology

We report a 19-year-old woman with thrombosis of a prosthetic mitral valve that was most likely due to a short dip in anticoagulation in the days preceding the event. Interestingly, at presentation the Patient was super-therapeutic, most likely a result of hepatic congestion as the heart began to fail, creating an illusion of thrombosis despite adequate anti coagulation.

A structured diary assessed the activity of five Consultant Nurses and one Consultant Physiotherapist over a one …
