The Interpretation Of Sarcasm By Typically Developing Children And Children With Lld In The School Age Population, Kristin D. Shepperd
The Interpretation Of Sarcasm By Typically Developing Children And Children With Lld In The School Age Population, Kristin D. Shepperd
Master's Theses and Capstones
The present study was conducted to obtain information about the interpretation of sarcasm by typically developing children and children with language learning disabilities in the school age population. Prior research indicates sarcasm comprehension is a difficult semantic task for typically developing children to acquire, and thus it is likely that children with language learning disabilities, who have been shown to have significant semantic difficulties, are at risk for delayed acquisition of sarcasm comprehension. Participating children took a 24 question multiple-choice sarcasm test. Results demonstrated significant differences in sarcasm comprehension between children with language learning disabilities and their typically developing peers. …
The Biogeochemical Influences Of Nitrate, Dissolved Oxygen, And Dissolved Organic Carbon On Stream Nitrate Uptake, Joseph A. Thouin
The Biogeochemical Influences Of Nitrate, Dissolved Oxygen, And Dissolved Organic Carbon On Stream Nitrate Uptake, Joseph A. Thouin
Master's Theses and Capstones
Streams are important hotspots for the retention and removal of nitrogen (N), an element that contributes to eutrophication and threatens the stability of coastal ecosystems. Nitrate (NO3-) is the most mobile form of N, and understanding the causal mechanisms that foster optimal NO3- retention and removal in stream systems is critical from both predictive and conservation standpoints. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is hypothesized to be a major control of instream NO 3- concentrations, but dissolved oxygen (DO) is also an important control of NO3- removal processes. Assessing the individual impacts of NO3-, DO, and DOC concentrations on stream NO3- removal …
Exploring Decision Making By Occupational Therapists In A School Setting, Jason J. Backes
Exploring Decision Making By Occupational Therapists In A School Setting, Jason J. Backes
Master's Theses and Capstones
Occupational therapists working in schools make many decisions regarding evaluation and services to support a student's special education. Six school-based occupational therapists from the Midwest shared, through interviews, how they chose assessment methods and tools for a particular student and how their evaluation findings were used to make service delivery decisions for that student. This group of therapists addressed team members' concerns, focusing on how sensory processing, handwriting, and functional skills influence a student's schoolwork performance. Their decisions regarding assessments were determined by the needs of the student and the questions raised by the educational team. Their evaluation information contributed …
Extreme Precipitation Trends In New England, Susan Grace Spierre
Extreme Precipitation Trends In New England, Susan Grace Spierre
Master's Theses and Capstones
Decision-makers require current data and analysis on extreme precipitation events and trends to facilitate effective adaptation. Here, multiple definitions of extreme precipitation (accumulations of one-inch, two-inch and four-inches, ten-, five- and one-yr. recurrence intervals, and the 99th percentile of events) are used to examine changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events in New England over the past 60-100 years. Correlations of trends in extreme precipitation events with temperature and with indices of atmospheric circulation patterns are also investigated.
Predominately positive trends were found for all extreme precipitation definitions. For example, increases of 1 events/decade in one-inch events …

Triticale was seeded at 198, 297, 396, 495, and 594 pure live seeds (PLS) m−2 and alfalfa …
Unauthorized Payment Transactions And Who Should Bear The Losses, Francis J. Facciolo
Unauthorized Payment Transactions And Who Should Bear The Losses, Francis J. Facciolo
Faculty Publications
This article is concerned with how losses should be allocated between account holders that are implicated in payment systems and the financial institutions that participate in those payment systems by acting as intermediaries between account holders. The account holders that are discussed in this article are not limited to individual consumers. This article also examines how an unauthorized transaction can be prevented and what this suggests about who should bear the loss of such a transaction. In doing so, this article looks at two moments at which an unauthorized payment transaction might be prevented: before the first unauthorized transaction, and …
International Commercial Arbitration And International Courts, Mark L. Movsesian
International Commercial Arbitration And International Courts, Mark L. Movsesian
Faculty Publications
The editors of this symposium have asked us to address an interesting question. Why hasn't international commercial arbitration’s (ICA's) success been repeated in the context of international courts? In the last few decades, states have created scores of permanent tribunals with jurisdiction to resolve disputes about international law. By and large, though, states have not been as receptive to the rulings of these tribunals. What accounts for this comparative lack of hospitality? Why do states treat ICA and international adjudication so differently?
In this essay, I offer an explanation. States treat ICA and international adjudication differently because they are categorically …

The Culture Differential In Parental Autonomy, Elaine M. Chiu
The Culture Differential In Parental Autonomy, Elaine M. Chiu
Faculty Publications
When the laws of a community reflect a dominant culture and yet many of its members are from other minority cultures, there is often conflict. When this conflict occurs in the legal regulation of the parent-child relationship, the consequences are tremendous for the children, the parents, and the State. This Article focuses on the federal statute criminalizing female genital surgeries, and, in doing so, it makes two major claims. The first claim is that the decisions of minority parents are scrutinized and regulated to a greater degree than the decisions of parents from the dominant culture, even when their decisions …

Better Revision: Encouraging Student Writers To See Through The Eyes Of The Reader, Patricia Grande Montana
Faculty Publications
(Excerpt)
Revision is an integral part of the first-year legal writing curriculum. Students rewrite most of their writing assignments for a grade, and, in many cases, the rewrites are weighted more heavily than the first drafts. The purposes of a rewrite in legal writing, as with other writing, are to resolve any inconsistencies and fill in gaps, strengthen the analysis and reasoning, and present the information in the clearest way possible. Though legal writing professors devote substantial time to the rewrite phase of assignments, in my experience, law students traditionally treat an assignment as completed as soon as they turn …

The Impact Of The Collective Efficacy Of A School Community On Individual Professional Development Outcomes, Cynthia H. Geer, Julie Q. Morrison
The Impact Of The Collective Efficacy Of A School Community On Individual Professional Development Outcomes, Cynthia H. Geer, Julie Q. Morrison
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
In the past decade, leading contributors in the areas of educational change and staff development have acknowledged that successes attained with individual aspects of professional development can be stifled, halted, or essentially canceled by seemingly immutable factors in the organization’s culture. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of the collective efficacy of science teachers within a school community on the individual outcomes for science teachers participating in a professional development program. The findings suggest that teachers participating in the program from schools with high levels of collective efficacy demonstrated gains in science teaching self-efficacy that were …

The Effect Of Devaluation On Output In The Egyptian Economy: A Vector Autoregression Analysis, Sahar M. Abdel-Haleim, Hala El-Ramly
Business Administration
The objective of this paper is to analyze the relationship between exchange rate changes and output in the Egyptian economy. This is the first such study that we know of for Egypt. Employing a Vector Autoregression model, the paper conducts the study using annual data for Egypt over the period 1982-2004. The results of the study indicate that devaluations have an initial contractionary effect on output in Egypt. This contractionary effect lasts for a period of as long as four years before the expected positive effect of the devaluation starts to materialize. Moreover, the study clarifies that real exchange rate …
Incorporating Value And Risk Management Principles In Developing Low-Income Housing Projects, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman
Incorporating Value And Risk Management Principles In Developing Low-Income Housing Projects, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman
Architectural Engineering
The construction industry is concerned with satisfying its customers’ needs through delivering projects that achieve their objectives and meet their expectations on time, within budget and as specified. Despite the several housing programmes constructed by government authorities, there is a real housing problem for the poor. This problem is attributed to a number of reasons. Amongst them, the inability of the low-incomers to cover the cost of supplied houses and the lack of the constructed projects to achieve users’ satisfaction. This highlighted the need to develop innovative and creative solutions that can deliver housing projects that achieve the satisfaction of …

Business Risk In Early Design: An Approach, Rahul Basavaraj Patil
Business Risk In Early Design: An Approach, Rahul Basavaraj Patil
Masters Theses
"The Business Risk in Early Design (B-RED) method is a tool used to determine the potential risks in business, in the early business development stages. In order to launch a successful business in today's competitive market environment, the business should equip itself to face the risks involved in business. If the potential risks are identified even before the launch of the business, then there is an opportunity to avert risks with little or no impact to the budget and schedule. The B-RED method presented in this thesis helps entrepreneurs and people with little or no experience in business to identify …
Adaptive Modulation For Cognitive Radios, Gaurav Sharma
Adaptive Modulation For Cognitive Radios, Gaurav Sharma
Masters Theses
"This thesis examines the benefits of using adaptive modulation in terms of spectral efficiency and probability of bit error for cognitive radio networks. In channels that fluctuate dynamically over time, systems that are based upon the conventional methods of fixed modulation formats do not perform well. Adaptive modulation provides many parameters that can be adjusted relative to the channel fading, including data rate, transmit power, instantaneous BER, symbol rate, and channel code rate or scheme. In this thesis, a systematic study on the increase in spectral efficiency obtained by optimally varying combinations of the modulation formats for a cognitive radio …
Laboratory Analysis Of Small Strain Moduli In Compacted Silts, David M. Weidinger
Laboratory Analysis Of Small Strain Moduli In Compacted Silts, David M. Weidinger
Masters Theses
"Soil compaction quality control accounts for a significant portion of geotechnical practice. Often the performance of a roadway can be directly linked to the quality of the compacted subgrade. A poor subgrade can result in weak areas in the road causing excessive deflections at the surface, ultimately leading to a pot hole or uneven surface and an unpleasant ride for the travelers. Vehicles passing over a section of highway causes small strains in the founding soil. These strains accumulate over time. A better understanding of how the compacted soil responds at small strains could shed light on improving the quality …
Peace On G-D'S Terms: The Ideological Project Of Christian Zionism, James Alton Croker Iii.
Peace On G-D'S Terms: The Ideological Project Of Christian Zionism, James Alton Croker Iii.
Master's Theses and Capstones
This study examines the Christian Zionist movement. It identifies the motivations, composition, and objectives of the Christian Zionist movement in order to illuminate the interest group's influence on U.S. foreign policy making on Israel. The movement's influence results from the framing of its ideology as a political project, through which the movement is able to capitalize on a pre-existing pro-Israel opinion bias among Evangelicals, construct a community of believers from these individuals, and mobilize that community into action. This argument shows that classic realist accounts, such as that put forward in Mearsheimer and Walt's work, do not account for a …
Recovery Policy, The Endangered Species Act And The Yellowstone Grizzly Bear (Ursus Arctos Horribilis): A Case Study Analysis Of The Role And Function Of Environmental Organizations, Rachel A. Platt
Master's Theses and Capstones
This Thesis explores the question, "what are the politics of de-listing an endangered species?" The Yellowstone grizzly de-listing process offered environmental organizations a platform to provide the general public with a genuine opportunity to engage with the comments and positions, to the federal government. It contends that a symbolic consensus has been constructed about the American West, Yellowstone National Park and the grizzly bear and these constructed were strong enough to generate the majority of edited responses to the Fish and Wildlife Service during the de-listing process. This thesis looks at the manner in which environmental organizations employ this natural …

The "Loyalist Problem" In The Early Republic: Naturalization, Navigation And The Cultural Solution, 1783--1850, Emily Iggulden
Master's Theses and Capstones
Traditionally, studies of the Loyalists from the American Revolution highlight their wartime experience or explore their post-war experience as exiles in other areas of the British Empire. Instead, this study begins in 1783 and focuses on the majority of Loyalists who stayed in the United States after Independence. Using legal documents, personal correspondence, and popular newspapers the "Loyalist Problem in the Early Republic," analyzes the legal and cultural dimensions of citizenship from the Loyalist's perspective. It suggests that the Loyalists played a significant role in the legal and cultural formation of American citizenship and national identity. Additionally, it explores the …
